Does Your Cat Eat Strange Things?
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-9-2009    5
Genetic predisposition ---- wool sucking, is seen more frequently in Siamese and Birman cats. Environmental factors. Is the cat bored or seeking attention? Compulsive disorder. Once other possibilities are ruled out, some pet behavioralists start to look into the possibility of compulsive disorder. munching on live power cords can be hazardous to a cat’s health–but the other danger is that ingested materials can get stuck in your cat’s stomach or intestine, which can obstruct the passage of food and may cut off the blood supply to organs–either scenario can be fatal As well, many houseplants are toxic to cats; chewing or eating these plants can have mild symptoms as well as fatality. If your cat has a history of ingesting non-food items and becomes lethargic, vomits, or displays other concerning behavior, take them to your veterinarian immediately See the ASPCA’s full list of plants toxic to cats More at the site

Whole Foods: Health Care Reform Casualty?
zizzy
by zizzy  8-19-2009    5
I've learned from the article comments that some people have known for a long time that John Mackey is anti-union. This comment is about those informed liberals. These informed, educated and/or moneyed liberals were content to purchase Chevre and Vouvray stocked by non-union labor. No righteous indignation stirred as their purchases were tallied by a non-union cashier. They glowed with self-satisfaction as they handed their designer grocery bag to a part-time-no-benefits grocery bagger. Halo firmly in place, they floated to the automatic doors assured of their superior position over Safeway shoppers who use plastic bags and eat processed foods. But now comes John Mackey's opinion which shattered their gourmet utopia and laid open their hypocrisy. Oh, they're furious now.

Bicycle for Grocery Shoppers
speerclan
by speerclan  8-7-2009
This is an intersting bike make-over. Christy and I have wondered about getting groceries on bikes ... is it really feasible. Our best strategy so far has been to use panniers and other bike bags. However, you can't do much grocery shopping with a system like ours. This strategy converts the bike into a little bit more utilitarian design, by building on more carrying capacity. It's a pretty cool idea.

Refrendum 1 - Bag Fee - Seattle
iulawboy

Excellent well reasoned article from the reluctant pro side. I'm still on the fence but still likely to vote no. I already reduce my bag consumption (could do better). I think 20cents across the board (both plastic and paper) is unwarranted. Either ban the plastic or have a tiered fee (15cents for plastic and 8cents for paper).

Everything You Need to Know About Plastic
brightlight4
by brightlight4  7-13-2009    3
Deplasticizing Your Food Chemicals are most likely to migrate from plastic into food when exposed to high heat, harsh soaps, and fat. These precautionary measures can help you play it safe. AVOID MICROWAVING IN PLASTIC. Heat speeds the release of chemicals into food. “People are being sold microwave-safe plastic, when in fact we’re not being told what’s in there and the rate at which these chemicals leach out,” says researcher Frederick vom Saal. Avoid this uncertainty by using ceramic or glass instead. EXPLORE THE ALTERNATIVES. “I have one word for you: glass,” says Terry Hassold, a professor of genetics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, who has studied the health effects of bisphenol-A (BPA) on mice. You can also store your food in ceramic containers, waxed- and brown paper bags, and metal canisters made for hot and cold food. USE PAPER–NOT CLING-WRAP. Many studies indicate that most of the cling wrap used by delis and grocery stores contains high levels o

More: Since there is as yet no official criteria set by the Environmental Protection Agency for determining a city's "greeness", Mother Nature Network considered several key areas to measure the effectiveness of a municipality's efforts at carbon footprint reduction. These included air and water quality, efficient recycling and management of waste, percentage of LEED certified buildings, acres of land devoted to green space, use of renewable energy, and easy access to green products and services.

Join the Onething revolution!
Lexica
by Lexica  1-21-2009
More: Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, each and every moment of the day there is one thing you can do to honor life, one thing that will honor you and the world you live in. It might be using cloth bags at the grocery store, not driving one day a week, reading a story to a child, or smiling at a stranger. We live in one world. Nothing can happen to you that doesn’t happen to me. Nothing can happen to them that doesn’t happen to us. For better or for worse, we are in this together. Let’s make it for better. Join the peaceful Onething revolution. As Gandhi said, "Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it." I can't save the planet. Neither can you. Nobody can. But that doesn't mean we need to succumb to despair, or to decide that anything short of total success means failure. Do what you can, where you are, with what you have. The important thing is the doing.

Vote With Your Fork
gingembre
by gingembre  11-4-2008
Vote against dependence on oil. Vote for lower health care costs. Vote against all disposable bags at the grocery store. Vote for healthy food choices at restaurants. Vote against unhealthy food choices. Vote for locally grown produce. Vote against the inhumane treatment of animals. Vote for organically-grown food. Vote against eating on the run. Vote for smaller portions. Vote against food waste. If you get frustrated at the current food environment, do something about it. Every dollar you spend, every food choice you make, and every meal you eat is an opportunity to vote for what you believe in. We can't change the way our food environment is structured overnight, but we can make a difference three times a day by voting with our forks.
