No Matter How Deep The Tinsel Gets
debbyski
by debbyski  12-21-2009    2
"Their passion notwithstanding, they're no match for a $450-billion marketing juggernaut whose seasonal tally helps determine the course of our national economy. Don't get me wrong; I'd never discourage the purists from raising their questions. After all, contention itself confers importance on an issue in America. And the paradox inherent in modern Christmases is worth grappling with. The very fact that the battle to save Christmas is joined year in and year out -- and has been since we started down the gift-giving, Black Friday, mallification path of excess -- seals the deal. If the tension lives, the true meaning of Christmas does too, no matter how deep the tinsel gets. And that ought to give everyone at least a little comfort and joy."

KYL: You have repeatedly said that your decision to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in Article III courts is because that is where you have the best chance to prosecute… How could you be more likely to get a conviction in federal court when Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has already asked to plead guilty before military commission and be executed? HOLDER: The determination I make of where I think we can best try these cases does not depend on the whims or desires of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. … I have decided Article III courts are the best place to do that. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is not making this decision. The attorney general of the United States is making this decision. I don’t think that was an answer.

Social Security Administration $700,000 Getaway
merrie
by merrie  7-15-2009    1
The Social Security San Francisco regional office anticipated spending about $700,000 on the convention, which started mid-day Tuesday and wrapped up Thursday afternoon for approximately 675 attendees. It will not know the actual cost until it collects and pays vouchers submitted by employees. Employees were required to pay their own expenses for entertainment, including a trip to a local casino. It was the first time that the regional office held such a conference since 2001, and agency officials say the meeting was well worth the expense. Leslie Walker, the Social Security Administration's regional communications director, said the agency was grappling with a wave of Baby Boomers who are becoming eligible for Social Security. At the convention, managers learned how to train employees on cost-saving measures such as encouraging the public to process documents via the Internet.

This is how Grandpa was traind to kill Nazis/Imperial Japanese
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  6-16-2009    3
More "How Grandpa Learned to Kill" video: Kill Or Be Killed . Grappling is for sports & competition. Soldiers are supposed to Kill The Enemy . Currently, we're training our soldiers to grapple. The fad for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/grappling has swept military combatives recently. Some active duty service-members think this is a bad idea. They think we are teaching our soldiers how to die rather than kill.

Too Many Snakes
dmoonme1

Well, he we go again. People if you don't want your pet when it grows up, don't buy it at all. If you must get rid of it, have it euthanized . People who just can't don't have the heart to have it killed are the real problem. In some cases it's just plain laziness and/or ignorance. For instance the proverbial kittens off the bridge. But Pythons etc. in the river? Come on. These life forms do so much damage to indigenous fauna and flora it's hard to calculate. I'm thinking better laws and enforcement on bringing these darn things into the country in the first place. Comments? Please...I'd like to hear more from you.

You bastards, you've killed us all!
pecksnif

We have phony rich people (with interest-only mortgages and piles of debt), phony beauty (with plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures), phony athletes (with performance-enhancing drugs), phony celebrities (via reality TV and YouTube), phony genius students (with grade inflation), a phony national economy (with $11 trillion of government debt), phony feelings of being special among children (with parenting and education focused on self-esteem), and phony friends (with the social networking explosion). All this fantasy might feel good, but, unfortunately, reality always wins. The mortgage meltdown and the resulting financial crisis are just one demonstration of how inflated desires eventually crash to earth.

The chilling & cowardly words of Eric Holder
jatfla
by jatfla  2-20-2009    5
These Cabinet appointees are the truly 'chilling' factors of this Administration. By his tone and very words addressed to the DOJ, he propagates the very thing he claims to be criticizing. AND he needs to look in the mirror and at the man who appointed him. The unadulterated nerve of these people astonish me. Americans are being bullied, demeaned, and herded....not to mention robbed! Is there a single truly American, with leadership skills, who will lead the repudiation of this so-called governing? As one lady's protest sign read: "I'll keep my Freedom - you keep your 'change."

Iowa: What Happens When a Town Implodes
ratilfar
by ratilfar  1-28-2009    3
Eight months after the Agriprocessors raid, Postville is still grappling with what its leaders call "a humanitarian and economic disaster," compounded by the recession and a harsh winter. Life isn't much easier for "legal" workers. Inside a faded community hall serving as a relief center are Michael Barner, 47, and Patricia Williams, 41, who moved to Postville last month to work at Agriprocessors but had to leave their jobs soon after due to illness. They have arrived with an eviction notice and are seeking help to return to Dubuque. "We came here. We tried. I got sick. We just have to go back home," says Barner.
