POPSDon't "Give A Give A Give A Garmin" (h/t Indiana Law Blog) I'm a lover of all things that are gadgets, and GPS toys are a favorite of mine, but this article discusses the use of GPS data from a defendant's Garmin device. Eric Hanson had evidence introduced by prosecutors in his murder trial was used to pinpoint his location on the morning of the crime. Score one for the prosecutors on this front. I suspect we will begin to see more of this sooner rather than later. GPS chips are installed on all new cell phones now. My new phone I recently picked up has builtin GPS navigation software which is brilliant, but knowing that the boys at the NSA's Fort Meade, MD SIGINT farm can pinpoint my location anytime they want is kind of scary.

POPSVerizon's Cheat Sheet For Battling AT&T, iPhone Oops! Verizon obviously didn't plan for this flyer--essentially a list of anti-iPhone talking points for its employees--to become public. While the specifics are interesting--there are a lot of exclamatory points!--it's not surprising that the company drew up such a list. I'm sure plenty of consumers walk into Verizon stores inquiring about the iPhone. It's sound business to prepare your employees for such conversations.

POPSYou might be wearing Computing's next wave
At a wearable computing conference in Boston's researchers showed off prototypes and discussed ideas. These kind of developments that could make mobile phones laptops, blackberries, ipods etc, obsolete, because they can be included in the life style in a way that people will find more comfortable. with foldable screeds, plug and play, miniturization, inclusion in fabrics, and with wireless, and remote downloads, gps etc. The momentum of the industry will shift dranmatically, ( as it does with all revolutionary development) and will change our lifestyle, and generally expand our options. It is also a reminder that our ability to project development, is only remotely valid, until a new breakthrough is the source of productive application. In retrospect, we see many of our most confident predictions, were bad guesses ( except maybe Moore's Law ) Through the inability to forecast, we are continually amazed by what we find, and discovery can be so much more enjoyable.

POPSWhy your Car's Sat Nav Doesn't Like The Sun Presenting their findings at a conference on space weather in Washington DC, they said the solar burst was also strong enough to affect civil aviation navigation systems, but to a lesser degree than the GPS network, which uses a different satellite system. It may explain why systems unexpectedly lose the signal when they had perfect reception only moments before. There have been some incidents where drivers following their systems have caused accidents by taking a wrong turning or attempting to programme the device while driving.
