Oil Prices Require More Than Congressional Accusations
merrie
by merrie  5-10-2008    1
He was correct to remind Americans that if we want to lower the cost of energy we must be willing to use our own resources, whether they are natural or those we can build, rather than rely upon others to provide for our needs. After all, isn’t self-reliance part of the American spirit. We should not recontributely on foreign governments, many of which are volatile, to supply our energy needs, nor should our large farmers rely on Federal Government handouts to prop up their financially lucrative businesses. President Bush was correct to note that Congressional support for farm subsidies will do little other than contribute to the rising prices of food. He was correct to remind Americans that if we want to lower the cost of energy we must be willing to use our own resources, whether they are natural or those we can build, rather than rely upon others to provide for our needs.

The Politics Of Freedom: David Boaz
merrie
by merrie  5-7-2008
(continued) heading early Wednesday for a new round of speeches, rallies and town meetings in West Virginia, which holds its primary on May 13," The New York Times reports. "Highlighting the financial woes of her campaign, Mrs. Clinton has lent her campaign more than $6 million over the last month, according to campaign officials." "Republicans have been trying to drive libertarian voters out of their party. But so far Democrats aren't jumping on that opportunity."

A Coup For The Kiwis
merrie
by merrie  4-16-2008    1
Forced to adjust to new economic realities, New Zealand farmers cut costs, diversified their land use, sought non-farm income opportunities and altered production as market signals advised — for example, by reducing sheep numbers and boosting cattle ranching. Farmers were aided on the cost side as input prices fell, because suppliers could no longer count on subsidies to inflate demand.

Big Welfare Cuts If You're Not British
merrie
by merrie  2-21-2008
Applicants will have to prove they are contributing to the community, such as by carrying out voluntary work, and will also be tested in English language and the British way of life. Currently, migrant workers are automatically given indefinite leave to remain after they have worked here for five years, and enjoy almost all the advantages of full citizenship, including entitlement to welfare benefits including tax credits, housing benefits, income support and child benefit. In future, that status will go, to be replaced by a new form of "probationary citizenship" with no right to non-contributory benefits.

The Star: Khir advises Indians to be self-reliant
walski69
by walski69  2-18-2008
Good advice, actually... but equally applicable to another ethnic group, the one his party champions. And it's an ethnic group that enjoys government perks, resulting in a mentality that's far from self-reliant. So, coming from him, this sounds a little hypocritical.

Wrong on Taxes: Bush sells America to China
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  1-7-2008    10
Romney says McCain was wrong to vote against Bush's tax cuts. If he really believes this, then he is not a true conservative. What is the truth about Bush's tax cuts? Bush slashed the revenue of the US government to help rich people get richer. This means the government has less money to spend. But he is the greatest spendthrift in the history of American Presidents. So who is paying for all of Bush's spending? It isn't Romney, who is getting millions back in tax cuts. It's the Chinese, who are buying US Treasury bonds to gain power over the US. Look at the numbers. the Chinese have almost literally financed the Iraq war. A true conservative spends money when he has it, and when he doesn't, he works for more. Bush's extravagance has sold our economic independence to a rival nation. Does this sound like treason to you? Because it sure does to me!

The Alien Grey
sahara
by sahara  11-11-2007
It is just plain evil that they are going after the poor things so rabidly, it's sad. This SOS Charity only protects red squirrels. The Save Our Squirrels charity says the Government should pay for culls of greys in areas near red populations. "What kind of country are we when an endangered species has to rely on handouts for its survival?" asks Carri Nicholson, its project manager.

Real wages fall under Howard
tabsey
by tabsey  11-3-2007
Howard's government has proven once again that they are determined that Australia will have a slave class. The pre-election tiny handouts from both parties (rather than the development of infrastructure) only add to this inflation. They do this knowing that lower income workers will lose their homes due to housing loan interest rates rising in response to the inflation. ie They couldn't run a bloody chook raffle!

Federal Grant for a Medical Mission Goes Awry
laceym
by laceym  6-14-2007    4
The Times noted, “The Coast Guard ships were given to Canvasback for a secular purpose, providing medical services. But Mr. Spence said Canvasback did not isolate the sales proceeds; instead it mingled them with its general revenues, which also cover activities that include evangelism. And under most court decisions, evangelism cannot be paid for with federal grants.” This abuse would not have occurred if lawmakers had respected the Constitution. Religious groups should use money they raise voluntarily to pay for their endeavors and not expect handouts from the taxpayers.

I'm sorry but this sounds to me to be the same thing all over again. We are being fed what they say is the "truth". Does Bush expect us to fall for this again. Remember this quote, Bush. "Fool me once; shame on you. Fool me twice; shame on me." I know you don't remember the quote but it is a good thing to keep in mind.

'A Hand Up Doesn't Always Require a Handout'
arifsali
by arifsali  10-15-2006
This is just incredible : Today, Grameen has 6.6 million borrowers in Bangladesh alone, borrowing $500 million a year in loans that average just over $100 each. The loans are entirely financed by borrowers' deposits and the bank recovers 98.85% of all money loaned. Notably, Grameen Bank has been profitable in all but three years since its launch. Our largely poor customers save $1.008 for every dollar they borrow, so the poor are truly funding the poor.
