POPSClause 11 ..WAKE UP PEOPLE! On December 16, it was reported by the Financial Times that China has imposed additional restrictions on the internet. People registering a domain name in China will have to present a company seal and a business license, the China Internet Network Information Center, a government-backed body, said in a statement on Monday. “Officials said the measure was part of a campaign to rein in pornographic content, but bloggers and internet activists interpreted it as a broader attempt to enforce internet censorship more heavily,” writes Kathrin Hille.

POPSThey Thought They Were Free 4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. 5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution. 6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common. 7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

POPSGuess who's now banned from Capitol Christmas tree! Freedom of religion now means no religion, I guess. Jeremiah 10:2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. Jeremiah 10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. Jeremiah 10:4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

POPSBeware The Stalin in Progressive Hearts Consider: Nowhere does the Constitution grant Congress authority to require every American to buy a particular private service or product on pain of forfeiture of a significant portion of their wealth. Yet, every version of Obamacare currently being discussed in Congress requires just that. Forcing all of us to buy officially approved health insurance is essential to a functioning government-run system. As Obama told Congress, "many of insurance reforms we seek - especially requiring insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions - cannot be achieved" without the individual mandate. Why? Because the politicians and bureaucrats who will manage the government-run health care program know that, without the force of government behind them, they won't be able to make the rest of us do what they tell us to do. But that is what government always does as it becomes more costly, intrusive and intolerant of dissent. As if to drive the point home,

POPSBuried at Wounded Knee - Fasting for Leonard Leonard who? Leonard Peltier was a mover and shaker in the American Indian Movement. He was THE SCAPEGOAT for a government operation designed to discredit AIM as a quasi-terrorist, criminal group, in the same way they suppressed black consciousness by criminalizing the Black Panthers and killing Huey Newton. Leltier was not killed but has been in prison for years for supposedly shooting and killing an FBI agent with a broken rifle and the lies (now admitted) of someone who was there. What would it feel like to be invisible? Read this and find out.

POPSGood Thoughts For Fractious Times With our increasingly tumultuous times, it is easy to be dismayed and lose faith. I find that recalling these thoughtful and stirring words from days gone by helps me understand that not only were there just as many contentious issues back then, but that we too will overcome them if we are diligent and persevere.

POPSThe scope – and dangers – of GE's control of NBC and MSNBC More: In 2006, The Boston Globe reported: "General Electric Co. spent $21.5 million last year trying to influence the US government, the most of any corporation, as total lobbying costs rose even as Congress began looking at ways to rein in such activities." GE's relationship with the U.S. Government is a vital aspect of its business: "Federal contracts for General Electric, based in Fairfield, Conn., rose to $3.8 billion during the two years ending Sept. 30, 2004, the last period for which figures are available." In June of this year, in an article headlined "General Electric is Once Again the Lobbying Champion," The Washington Times reported: "General Electric spent more on lobbying in this year's first quarter than any other company, newly filed federal lobbying reports show. The company shelled out $7.2 million for lobbyists in April, May, and June--that's $160,000 each day Congress was in session."

POPSThe Four Reasons the Mainstream Media are Worthless Dan Rather said, regarding American media, "What you have is a miniature version of what you have in totalitarian states". Indeed, former military analyst and famed Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg said that the government has ordered the media not to cover 9/11. An expert on propaganda testified under oath during trial that the CIA employs THOUSANDS of reporters and OWNS its own media organizations. Famed Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein says the CIA has already bought and paid for many successful journalists. I could only clip whole paragraphs for some reason, so the clip isn't as I would have liked it to be, but the whole article is well worth the read. Please go to the source for the full story.

POPSChina 'wants to bury' Australian Uighur doco Just coincidental that it happens at the same time that the Rio Tinto/China boss has been accused of corruption. Not a reason for imposing censorship on Australians. Our govt does enough censoring, and the right wing conservative aws would have more if they could get away with it.

POPSSave the Children opposes internet filter If these people have no faith or trust in the system, why would you bother. Can a govt actually listen to those who know and scrap a showy, useless scheme. Spend the money more wisely. The police agencies have tasted success. They may even catch the rich who practise this obscene behaviour, if given the funds.

POPSWeb filters to censor video games Any infringement on the freedom of the internet is inherently a bad thing, once they start restricting sites (which has already been going on for a while) what is to stop them expanding the restrictions to other things like the alternate media etc?
3
POPSFour Reasons Mainstream Media is Worthless Censorship is the biggest threat to any media tasked with ensuring transparency from our government. The simple act of self-censorship is the act of selling itself out to its corporate masters. Any journalist who takes it upon themselves to ‘protect’ the compromised politician or the renegade police officer does not deserve to wear the title journalist. Any news media corporation that suppresses stories to protect personal relationships or refuses to criticize any government entity for fear of losing sponsors or favored standing should be banned from the industry. As anyone can plainly see I hold the journalistic profession to the very highest of ethical standards because they all speak for us. We, the citizens of any country, cannot appear in the press conferences held by public officials to ask for the truth, we depend on journalists to keep us informed, fully informed. We depend on them to take us where ever the facts lead.

POPSWeb filters to censor video games Censorship has failed to win support for actions against adults, so the govt makes an emotive effort to gain approval from those adults acting as parents. Once accepted in principle, the govt acts as if it has approval for the original plan. The games are rated to keep the sus ones out of shops because the parents buy them for the kids. Evidence says kids can develop wrong attitudes to such things as violence, so the govt can feel justified.

POPSAs Blogs Are Censored, It’s Kittens to the Rescue Again a tough article to clip, do yourself a favour and make sure to read the whole thing. Be aware that the governments of North America and Europe are also doing this but with a much better sleight of hand. sites like Youtube and Yahoo and their parent company Google are well known for removing videos that don't fit their view of how we should live. But did you know that they plan to do away with free speech online completely? as with everything I spout you can go look for the evidence yourself (those of you who aren't too lazy to anyway) just search out "Internet 2" On a related topic, if you want a non-biased uncensored search engine that doesnt log everything you do online, then may I suggest you use "http://www.scroogle.org/"

POPSAppeals Court Backs Prison for E-Mail Obscenity Whorley was convicted in 2006 and sentenced to 20 years in prison, in part for possessing genuine child pornography. But the Justice Department — perhaps sensing a chance to smuggle bad law onto the back of an unsympathetic defendant — also charged Whorley for having unsavory manga under the recently-enacted Protect Act, which outlaws obscene cartoons depicting minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct. While this is admittedly an unusually despicable character, the courts should not be able to use censorship as the basis for imprisonment. This is clearly the criminalization of thought, and it sets a dangerous precedence. Another aspect of this is that this legal system slaps the wrist of drunk drivers who have killed someone and then sends another person to prison for 20 years for photos and words. Unbelievable.

POPSThe Dawning of Internet Censorship in Germany Censoring the internet is an obvious censorship of free speech. The specter of government involvement in determining what is ‘appropriate’ for its citizens to access and/or view is repugnant. A government that suppresses this freedom is taking on the relationship of a parent to a child. This type of relationship is not appealing and no government has the right to expect this of its citizens. Instead, this turned out to be a example of how allowing the public to participate in government decisions a solution was worked out that did not censor the internet. Something the U.S. government needs to allow. It matters little how noble the reason or what the intended goal is in its pursuit of censorship, once the government is allowed to partake of this power it will invariably abuse it and want more. This is simply human nature.

POPS Iranian Twitterers Sidestep News Blackout
"Since the election, we have heard reports that users in Iran are having difficulties accessing Facebook," said Barry Schnitt, Facebook spokesman. "This is disappointing, especially at a time when Iranians are turning to the internet as a source of information about the recent election." Judging by tweets since Friday's election, the censorship didn't slow some users down. Many then tweeted to share their tactics. "Iranelection" was the top Twitter trend for the past few days, and a message thread led by "Persiankiwi" appeared to be orchestrating hacker attacks on official Iran websites while firing off updates on developments in the streets. "We are going offline to get a phone free for calling out," Persiankiwi tweeted at midday. "We are also moving location - too long here - is dangerous." A subsequent Persiankiwi tweet reads: "Attacked in streets by mob on motorbikes with batons - firing guns into air - street fires all over town - roads closed."
