Monthly Monitor and Submission
isulucouk
by isulucouk  10-8-2009
So you like it at the top! It can take up to 6 months for the search engines to fully list your site. In that time, you can have pages dropped off their databases, and you need to be sure that you keep your position. That is why every month, we check to see if you are listed, and if not, we resubmit your page. Some of this is automated, but some is manual as Google for one do not like automated queries.

"They could tap the line upstream of the provider, and just look for packets containing www.google.com/search. Next to this are your search terms in plain text, with your IP address in the same packet" Thats just one example of just how unsecure Google is, and here is another. "Most employers monitor the websites visited by their employees. There are impressive "employer spyware" packages such as Websense that they use to do this. Because the GET method is preferred by almost all search engines (see this page), even if the employer sees only the web address that you used to arrive at Google, he already knows the search terms you requested. With a record of all the search terms you've used while you were at work, each with a date and time recorded in his log, your employer has a pretty good idea of what you've been thinking. There are no laws that prevent employers from doing this sort of snooping" Full article at source.

"Wearing the Internet"
cakebelly
by cakebelly  7-19-2009    1
more: MIT’s Media Lab has explored the idea of wearable computing for some time. “Wearable computing hopes to shatter this myth of how a computer should be used,” states the program’s web site, “A person’s computer should be worn, much as eyeglasses or clothing are worn, and interact with the user based on the context of the situation.” Pattie Maes of the lab’s Fluid Interfaces group goes one step further. As the leader of a team of seven graduate students that developed the system, she characterizes it as somewhat more than a wearable device — she refers to it as a digital “sixth sense.” No, she can’t see dead people. But, as a recent TED demo shows — sans keyboard or monitor — she literally has the Internet cloud on her arm (and her hands, and…).

Scroogle: An introduction and micro-review
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  6-23-2009
As mentioned in a previous rant, here it is in the flesh. every person I have turned on to this has continued to use it, and with good cause. Its most obvious advantages are that it is simplistic and unbiased. Unlike serach engines from the Google family where the highest bidders appear on the first page. But it doesn't stop there, this is truly anonomous searching and surfing that to a large extent ignore ads, has multi-browser support (support for safari is near completion if not already done) and has a toggle button for when encryption is required. As with all open source stuff if you like it then support it... or don't.

Are e-books the new newspapers?
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  4-19-2009
Trend Monitor was writing about newspapers being circulated using what was then called "data broadcasting". We brought out our own 'ebook' at the time designed to work with floppy disk. With wireless distribution, this could finally become the next big technology given the enormous financial and environmental cost of paper newspapers, journals, magazines and books. The way a subscription model would work is that publishers would (jojntly or singly) lease ebooks to customers as part of the subscription, so they would not have to pay upfront costs.

GeoEye-1, Google's Satellite Sends First Image
Mohir
by Mohir  10-9-2008
In an interview for Wired magazine, GeoEye's vice president of communications and marketing, Mark Brender, explained, “This is the opposite of a spy satellite. Spies don't put info on the Internet and sell imagery. We're an Earth-imaging satellite, and we can sell our imagery to customers around the world who have a need to map and measure and monitor things on the ground. We're commercializing a technology that was once only in the hands of the governments. Just like the internet, just like GPS, just like telecom – all invented by the government. And now we are on the front end of the spear that is commercializing this technology.”
