POPSMan-Made Disaster (c) Auctioning of assigned amounts or emission allowances at the international and/or domestic level; ( More taxes ) (d) A uniform global levy on CO2 emissions, with exemption for LDCs; ( More taxes ) (e) Levies on emissions from international aviation and maritime transport; (More taxes) (f) A tax on air travel; ( More taxes ) (g) A share of proceeds from market-based mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol. ( More taxes ) (h) A global levy on international monetary transactions. ( More taxes ) Gee, I detect pattern. Well, that should help pay off the country-killing deficit caused by the Obama Depression Budget. Investors Business Daily calls the EPA's finding -- that carbon dioxide is toxic, and therefore should be regulated -- "Man-Made Disaster" http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=330822830678035

POPSFactory farms get a pass on reporting greenhouse gas emissions
A lot of us question why Americans should care about livestock poop, particularly in the context of greenhouse gas emissions. Animal manure and livestock produce methane and nitrous oxide, which are about 23 and 300 times respectively stronger than carbon dioxide. According to the EPA GHG Inventory, manure is the 5th largest source of methane and the 4th largest source of nitrous oxide in the U.S. It results in more than twice as many emissions as waste incineration and natural gas systems in the U.S. The way in which CAFOs pool their manure is a large part of the problem. When stored in pits and lagoons as is typical on factory farms, the manure breaks down anaerobically, in the absence of oxygen, which exacerbates methane emissions. The EPA has acknowledged that when manures are distributed on pastures as would be typical in a grass-fed animal system, methane production is limited. Thus, there are proven ways to reduce methane emissions in manure management.

POPSBring on the switchgrass Though we need to improve upon the methods, it seems to make sense to use plant waste rather than corn to produce ethanol.

POPS"Greens" Thwart Gasoline Production
So even though ConocoPhillips is aiding and abetting the NRDC to achieve the Green dream of absolute government control over the U.S. energy supply, the enviros are still in take-no-prisoners mode, refusing to allow the expansion of a single refinery. Imagine what the rest of us can expect from the Greens. Green groups are working through the state attorney general’s office to block the $800 million upgrade of the Chevron refinery in the city of Richmond, Ca. California attorney general, climate crusader Jerry Brown claims that the upgrade will produce an additional 900,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year. But Chevron says that the upgrade will actually reduce GHG emissions by 220,000 tons. It’s hard to know whose figure is closer to the truth, but it’s worth noting that false statements made by Chevron are prosecutable under the federal and California state law, while Jerry Brown and the activists can say pretty much whatever they want without legal accountability

POPSEmail The Senate: Vote NO on the Climate Security Act! S. 3036 significantly grows the government by giving more power to bureaucrats, such as requiring the Environmental Protection Agency to establish a greenhouse gas (GHG) registry You will soon be voting on S. 3036, the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act of 2008. This legislation is a cap-and-trade plan that will attempt to impose a limit on greenhouse gas emissions. But what it really will do is place severe regulatory burdens on domestic industry, impede trade, and harm the nation's economy. Cap-and-trade is nothing more than a hidden tax, as the Congressional Budget Office has estimated that this bill would raise costs on energy use to $1.13 trillion by 2018. I urge you to oppose this bill and the dramatic increase in the government's control over my daily life!

POPSResearch to show UK flooding is from global warming I have just read about the fact that for the first time computer modelling has been able to detect a "human fingerprint" on the increased rainfall that Britain is seeing. They compare climate simulations run with, and without, anthropogenic GHG inputs and the difference that shows up is our "human fingerprint". It has been seen in temperature predictions before, but the research that will be published this week will be the first time the human fingerprint has been detected in rainfall predictions. It is essential to note that what is happening now — and increasing trend to heavier rainfall patterns over Britain — is what is claimed to have been predicted by the research. If this turns out to be substantial research maybe it will stop professional denialists like Andrew Bolt and Tim Blair carrying on like school kids with a fart cushion every time a cold snap ensues.

POPSPR exercise The debate on global warming and "green economics" has thankfully come under the spotlight with the upcoming Federal Election. The Labour opposition, specifically leader Kevin Rudd, continues to "bag" the current Prime Minister (John Howard) for his lack of action in this area. But for all the grandstanding Rudd fails to deliver any firm policy in support of this debate. If the voting public took global warming and it's effects on future generations as a serious issue - and so they should be - the policies presented by the major parties should determine the result of this election. Meanwhile, the only action at the State level (in Queensland) is increased competition in the private sector for reducing the cost of coal generated electricity. Is this really the answer? Time for action.....

POPSCivilization Threatened by Global Warming - Six Leading Scientists Say See first source for the full article. Present knowledge does not permit accurate specification of the dangerous level of human-made GHGs. However, it is much lower than has commonly been assumed. If we have not already passed the dangerous level, the energy infrastructure in place ensures that we will pass it within several decades. We conclude that a feasible strategy for planetary rescue almost surely requires a means of extracting GHGs from the air. Development of CO2 capture at power plants, with below-ground CO2 sequestration, may be a critical element. Injection of the CO2 well beneath the ocean floor assures its stability (House et al. 2006). If the power plant fuel is derived from biomass, such as cellulosic fibres grown without excessive fertilization that produces N2O or other offsetting GHG emissions, it will provide continuing drawdown of atmospheric CO2.

POPSCO2 form agricultural trade The growth of crops is a CO2 sink and the consumption of food is a CO2 source. The impact that trade has on the North-South distribution of CO2 is not measurable but it can have an impact on attempts to back calculate the East-West source distribution. :)

POPSClimate change challenges business, too "The invisible hand can only allocate capital and labor in the most efficient, welfare-maximizing way if the invisible man can see what it's doing". Neoclassical economics is no longer valid in environment economics.
