'Smart Planet' Report - U.S. Water Consumption Down Despite Population Increase
ericgyoung
by ericgyoung  11-4-2009
This clip comes to us via "Smart Planet" and suggests that U.S. water consumption is down despite a 30% increase in population. The article shows an interesting breakdown of our water usage, revealing that the bulk of our water use is in irrigation and thermoelectric power generation. Only 1% of our total water use is on domestic use. Think how much lower we could drive the 49% use for thermoelectric power generation if we upgraded our badly-antiquated power grid?

An Open Letter to the Council of the American Physical Society

by amgumen  11-2-2009
Studies of a variety of natural processes, including ocean cycles and solar variability, indicate that they can account for variations in the Earth’s climate on the time scale of decades and centuries. Current climate models appear insufficiently reliable to properly account for natural and anthropogenic contributions to past climate change, much less project future climate. The APS supports an objective scientific effort to understand the effects of all processes – natural and human --on the Earth’s climate and the biosphere’s response to climate change, and promotes technological options for meeting challenges of future climate changes, regardless of cause.   The U.S. Geological Survey declined to say whether the two quakes were linked. "The simple answer is we can't speculate on a connection," said Carrieann Bedwell of the USGS. "Both are in highly seismic areas." The epicenters of the two temblors are about 4,700 miles (7,600 kilometers) apart.

9 Environmental Boundaries We Don't Want to Cross
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  9-25-2009
Records of global transitions between geological ages, and of regional changes between environmental stages, suggest that planet-wide change could happen relatively quickly. It might not take thousands or millions of years for Earth’s environment to be altered. It could happen in centuries, perhaps even decades. Exactly what Earth would look like is difficult to predict in detail, but it could be radically different from the mild environment that has prevailed for the last 10,000 years. It was temperate stability that nurtured the rise of civilization, and it should continue for thousands of years to come, unless humanity keeps pushing the limits. “The Earth of the last 10,000 years has been more recognizable than the Earth we may have 100 years from now. It won’t be Mars, but it won’t be the Earth that you and I know,” said Foley. “This is the single most defining problem of our time. Will we have the wisdom to be stewards of a world we’ve come to dominate?” Th

Meet The Man Who Has Exposed the Great Climate Change Con Trick
merrie
by merrie  8-18-2009    3
What Heaven And Earth sets out to do is restore a sense of scientific perspective to a debate which has been hijacked by ‘politicians, environmental activists and opportunists’. It points out, for example, that polar ice has been present on earth for less than 20 per cent of geological time; that extinctions of life are normal; that climate changes are cyclical and random; that the CO2 in the atmosphere " to which human activity contributes the tiniest fraction " is only 0.001 per cent of the total CO2 held in the oceans, surface rocks, air, soils and life; that CO2 is not a pollutant but a plant food; that the earth’s warmer periods " such as when the Romans grew grapes and citrus trees as far north as Hadrian’s Wall " were times of wealth and plenty. All this is scientific fact " which is more than you can say for any of the computer models turning out doomsday scenarios about inexorably rising temperatures, sinking islands and collapsing ice shelves.
