POPSGenome-wide study of autism published in Nature "The biggest challenge to finding the genes that contribute to autism is having a large and well studied group of patients and their family members, both for primary discovery of genes and to test and verify the discovery candidates," said Aravinda Chakravarti, professor of medicine, pediatrics and molecular biology and genetics at the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine at Johns Hopkins, and one of the study's senior authors. "This latest finding would not have been possible without these many research groups and consortia pooling together their patient resources. Of course, they would not have been possible without the genomic scanning technologies either."

POPSThe Great Silence Listen to the "music of life" here: All of the music samples here were produced from protein and DNA sequences:. How cool is that? Perhaps all that junk DNA, isn't junk after all. .:D

POPSEndangered Species Get Iced in Museum DNA Repository "Genetic information from species on National Park Service land that are threatened with extinction will now be frozen and stored for future research at the American Museum of Natural History". It's good to know that someone is planning ahead. But lets not stop with a few endangered species, lets get all of them.

POPSHow absurd is this; A patent on a human gene? How absurd is this; A patent on a human gene? I believe the patent law is way out of line. You would not believe what has been patented, from seeds, conventional plant varieties and ANIMAL SPECIES to herbs, spices, oils and sugarcane, they never got around to PATENTING marijuana for entertainment or medicinal purposes, they just outlawed that altogether. It wouldn't surprise me that sometime in the future the air we breathe will have a patent owned by some corporation who can thus charge a fee for BREATHING. I've got a good idea, why don't some big corporation take out a patent on GREED, they would own the whole GD world if they could do that. Please watch the video and sign a message of support to stop BIG PHARMA from taking patents out on human genes. http://thinkingblue.blogspot.com

POPSWhat if, the alien, is no more than a human? These same thermodynamic arguments should also hold on Earth-like planets elsewhere in the cosmos. And if that's the case, then ET may not be so alien after all, as Higgs and Pudritz imply with the extraordinary conclusion to their paper: "The combined actions of thermodynamics and subsequent natural selection suggest that the genetic code we observe on the Earth today may have significant features in common with life throughout the cosmos." Now that's a thought....

POPSDoes nurture change nature? Interesting experiments. Mainly in the sense that is conveyed through these experiments. That is, we always have the opportunity to assume responsibility upon our lives.

POPS"Babies born in 2019 will have genetic code mapped at birth" continues: But the development will also lead to questions about privacy and access to individuals' genetic records. Genotyping services, which examine about two million of the genome's six billion DNA letters for clues to disease, are already available to consumers for about £700. Customers can have their whole genome mapped for about £70,000. Illumina is preparing to launch a much cheaper whole-genome service within two years. It has already begun seeking consent from its first customers, who are likely to pay between £7,000 and £14,000.

POPSWoolly mammoth DNA nearly deciphered Full-sized mammoths, about 8 to 14 feet tall like elephants, became extinct about 10,000 years ago. go to source full story To obtain the DNA, scientists relied on 20 balls of mammoth hair found frozen in the Siberian permafrost. That technique - along with major improvements in genome sequencing and the still-emerging field of synthetic biology - is helping biologists envision a science-fiction future.

POPSChimps are related to Humans It seems that genetically Chimpanzees are very closely related to human beings and are to be classified as "homo" in the future. I hope they don't make the same mistakes as humans as they evolve!!

POPSCan Genetic Information Be Controlled By Light? It has been known for many years that the individual bases that code the genetic information contained in DNA show a high degree of photostability, as the energy that they take up from UV radiation is immediately released again. Surprisingly, however, it is found that in DNA, which consists of many bases, those mechanisms are ineffective or only partially effective. It seems that the deactivation of UV-excited DNA molecules must instead occur by some completely different mechanisms specific to DNA, which are not yet understood.

Period! Don’t drink Coke it is toxic. Also, don’t brush your teeth with toothpaste which has sodium Fluoride in either. That is Rat poison. Just thought you should know."

POPSPalin is "Racist, Sexist, Vindictive , and Mean"
No wonder the vast sea of white, cheering faces at the Republican Convention went wild for Sarah: They adore the type, it’s in their genetic code. So much for McCain’s pledge of a “high road” campaign; Palin is incapable of being part of one. * Calendar * Economic Equality * Elections * Environment * Local Focus * Social Justice * Survey Results * War & Peace Browse > Home / Elections / Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper): Palin Is “Racist, Sexist, Vindictive, And Mean” Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper): Palin Is “Racist, Sexist, Vindictive, And Mean” September 5, 2008 sarah_palin_2.jpgby Charley James – “So Sambo beat the bitch!” This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.
