Possible Big Three Bailout: Political Context
Andrew Gillies
by Andrew Gillies  9-4-2008
Pearlstein, a columnist for the Washington Post, weighs in on likely action inside the Beltway on auto biz. Later in the column, he concludes that "the best of a set of bad options might be for the government to step in and provide the Big Three with low-interest long-term loans, just as it did years ago with Lockheed and Chrysler." Note: GM's market capitalization is just under $6 billion, a shocking number given the company's $171 billion in latest-twelve-month revenues. Google's market cap is $144 billion.

A Reform Ticket
merrie
by merrie  8-31-2008    6
Bear in mind that Mr. Murkowski had already served as junior U.S. Senator from Alaska for 22 years. Mr. Murkowski was junior senator for so long because Senator Ted Stevens (who was recently indicted for corruption) had lifetime tenure in the senior post. Shortly after joining the oil and gas commission, Mrs. Palin commenced an ethics probe of the state's Republican party chairman, Randy Ruedrich, involving conflicts of interest with oil companies. The probe resulted in a $12,000 fine for the party chair. She crossed party lines in 2004 to join a Democratic representative's ethics complaint over an international trade deal against the Republican Attorney General Gregg Renkes, who had ties to the Murkowski machine. Mr. Renkes resigned. In late 2005, Mrs. Palin announced her run for Governor before then-Governor Murkowski had announced his intention to stand for re-election. In a three-way primary, Mrs. Palin got 51% to Mr. Murkowski's 19%.

MSNBC's Network Chief Down Plays The Personal Bickering
merrie
by merrie  8-29-2008    1
The sudden death this summer of NBC News Washington bureau chief Tim Russert, who made frequent appearances on MSNBC, removed a political and temperamental rudder for the network. Mr. Griffin has tried to fill the power vacuum since, struggling to shepherd the network's big personalities through a period of transition. The network drew 2.15 million viewers on its first night of convention coverage, 88% more than tuned in for the first night of the 2004 Democratic convention, according to Nielsen Media Research. MSNBC also beat Fox News among younger viewers that night. Fox News is owned by News Corp., which also owns Dow Jones & Co., publisher of The Wall Street Journal.network's chief played down the

Addiction often leads to decline in work performance and struggle in personal relationships. There is a general apathy with addiction, or at least a re-prioritization of your goals, hopes and even relationships. This can cause you to lose interest in things you once enjoyed and likely will make your addiction your first priority. You may choose certain occupations and friendships based on their being compatible or complementary with your addiction to avoid conflict.

A Phelps Phenomenon
merrie
by merrie  8-15-2008
"It's been a long time since a swimmer has been a poster child of the Olympics like this," said John Cadigan, general manager of Meadowbrook Aquatic and Fitness Center, the Mount Washington pool where Phelps and fellow Olympian Katie Hoff have trained. "It really raises the level of awareness about swimming, both for the casual lap swimmer and for kids interested in learning to swim, but it also increases interest in competitive swimming," he said. "It's something that Michael said he wanted to do four years ago, and he's certainly managed to do that." MicroCredit
zalisan
by zalisan  8-2-2008    3
Microcredit is the extension of small loans to people too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. These very small loans allow the poor to develop their various businesses and trades. As a result people have the chance to bring themselves out of poverty. Microcredit goes directly to the people who need it and instills a sense of pride that can sometimes be lost with traditional charity handouts. When money is used for microcredit, it is not used once but over and over again. When a loan is repaid with interest, the money generated is given to a new borrower. In time this creates a sustainable institution, which is not reliant on continuous donations. The majority of microcredit borrowers are women because they have proven to be excellent at managing their businesses. Also, when a lady controls the finances the money she earns tends to go back into the home and to her children's education. Promoting credit as a human right. Helping poor families help themselves to overcome.

General Electric And Al Gore $cheme To Undermine Domestic Drilling
merrie
by merrie  7-29-2008    7
GE stubbornly adheres to climate change alarmism because it has placed a huge financial bet on carbon-free energy sources, such as wind, that are threatened by domestic oil production. Climate change fears and tight oil supplies are the driving force for renewable energy. Increasing the supply of oil will reduce its price, making wind power even less competitive, even with generous government subsidies. GE CEO Jeff Immelt, already in hot water for poor stock performance, can't afford to lose his gamble on renewable energy. Faced with this threat, Immelt is shrewdly using his NBC news empire to promote climate change fears and wind turbines as a sound energy alternative. For economic and national security reasons Americans desperately need natural resource development in our own backyard.

Lowering Interest Rates Would Be A BIG Mistake
cmstratton
by cmstratton  7-14-2008
Everyone knows the economy is in trouble right now, but not raising, and even lowering interest rates would be a BIG mistake. Because of inflation, people are spending more and more of their budgets on basic necessities like food, fuel, clothes, etc. While lowering interest rates might keep mortgages more accessible and affordable, if inflation keeps rising, even if mortgages are down to 5% people won't be able to afford them, because all of their money will be going to their basic necessities. We need to curb inflation so that people can still afford to live in general, before we start worrying about keeping big ticket items like houses more affordable. And as far as banks go, isn't a free-market system supposed to allow some institutions that aren't performing or are making bad decisions fail? By continuing to bail some of these banks out that were making horrible decisions, you're just reinforcing bad behavior.

Vienna-Based Investigators Getting Tough On Iran Now
merrie
by merrie  7-12-2008    2
Why the emphasis now on sins Iran may have committed in the past? Wasn’t the finding that warhead design stopped in 2003 reassuring enough? No, say nuclear experts inside and outside the international agency. Candor about Iran’s progress in designing a weapon matters because Tehran’s scientists continue to move forward on a related front. They are learning how to make uranium fuel. And if they already have a good warhead design in hand, the lack of fuel may be the one thing standing between them and the ability to make a bomb. The American finding last December that Iran suspended its weapon-design work in 2003 created a classic case of a glass that could be seen as either half full or half empty. That does not mean they have a workable design for the most frightening kind of bomb in today’s world — one miniaturized to about one ton so it can sit atop a missile, which is much faster and harder to stop than any plane

the death penalty and gun control. Mr. Obama endorsed the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the District of Columbia’s gun-control law. We knew he ascribed to the anti-gun-control groups’ misreading of the Constitution as implying an individual right to bear arms. But it was distressing to see him declare that the court provided a guide to “reasonable regulations enacted by local communities to keep their streets safe.” We were equally distressed by Mr. Obama’s criticism of the Supreme Court’s barring the death penalty for crimes that do not involve murder. Mr. Obama’s shifts are striking because he was the candidate who proposed to change the face of politics. We don’t want any “redefining” on these big questions. This country needs change it can believe in.

As someone who has lived under both systems, and who makes major use of heathcare services, I can tell you without any hesitation, that the Canadian system is far fairer and superior to the discriminatory system in my home country, the U.S.

Moral Depravity in the Highest Places
papananook
by papananook  7-1-2008    1
After 7 1/2 years of George W. Bush, much of the media and political establishment — which have never shown much interest in holding Bush to account — now appear anxious to simply move on. They seem determined to leave unexamined the full cruelty and mendacity of the Bush administration, with its unlawful wars and blatant violations of the Geneva Conventions. Moving on is a great idea - once there’s been some accountability, with a full public recognition of wrongdoing, and a commitment to bring about change. Otherwise, nothing will have been learned. The comments of Yoo, who authored top-level internal memos justifying torture and virtually unlimited presidential power, suggest a moral depravity in very high places. That depravity led to the horrific abuses at Abu Ghraib and at other U.S. prisons in Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay and “black sites” around the world. The dean of the Massachusetts School of Law, Lawrence Velvel, argues that Bush and top administration offi

Veterans Respond to General Clark's Comments
cptenaud
by cptenaud  7-1-2008    2
The bottom line is this: If Democrats tuck tail and run from Republicans in this instance, we run the risk of ceding authority on military issues to John McCain for the rest of the campaign. Whether you like Clark or not, everyone has an interest in defending him vigorously in this case. We cannot allow the Right and the media to get away with trashing the first guy to come out in prime time to slam McCain's military "expertise." If our organizations don't defend Clark as being right in this case, we give in to the idea that Republicans are the parents in terms of national defense, and Democrats are the children--something those on the Right will be more than happy to reinforce. This idea that we can't question someone's expertise on military matters simply because they served could very easily become the next "whoever is against the war is unpatriotic" mantra. And that's not something I'm prepared to accept.
