POPSSex and Gender
In fact, behind your question is the fundamental problem of the degree to which behaviour is innate and to which it is acquired – an essential question that philosophers and scientists have been debating for centuries. This remains an ideologically-charged subject, which the media adore. Absolutely. The media often echo works that argue that cerebral specialisation differs between male and female. They say, for example, that language functions are undertaken by both hemispheres only in women’s brains. What do you say? The theories on the hemispheric differences between the sexes in language appeared over thirty years ago. They have not been confirmed by recent brain imaging studies which allow us to see the living brain at work. These theories are often based on observations carried out on very small samples – often a dozen people. People continue to quote these studies whereas contemporary scientific reality is very different. Meta-analyses, which draw conclusions from all the exp

POPSElderly Drug Abuse on the Rise - Pot The article: Baby Boomers and Elderly Often Overlooked Substance Abusers cites the research below as the base for the discussion. I clipped the research link so I could get back to the graphs. It's quite shocking. Grandma and Grandpa are smoking as much pot as their grand-teens. "Just as teens are having problems with prescription drugs, baby boomers, and the elderly often suffer more for their use and abuse of these drugs. It is extremely important then for you to monitor any family member who is elderly. Gathering as much information as possible about drug abuse is your first step. It may be a cliché, but forewarned is forearmed." (It's 10 o'clock...do you know where your Granny is? All kidding aside, I can see why the older population would be even more susceptible to substance abuse. They have a lot more to deal with in this screwy economy than we do. Escapism exists at all levels).

POPSAre Gender Roles Socially Constructed? Most of our perceptions come from a common world of social practices and institutions so embedded in our shared reality of power, language, and identity that they are invisible to us. These shared perceptions, that is, these perceptions about which many people agree, are social constructions. Social constructions may seem to be reality, but what they truly are is a shared way of seeing something that some people have agreed upon. People who are not aware that they are determined by the specific cultural meanings, the social constructions, of their culture will not be free to be fully who they are. They will not be free to explore the many ways one can live and experience life.

POPSGender And Society I'd like to talk about gender identity in my personal life. As I grew into adolescence and my girlfriends talked about boys, I felt bored, but I wanted to date to be like the others. An other than heterosexual identity never occurred to me. So I got married and it was a good marriage; I had two beautiful daughters and I genuinely liked men. What kept me from being aware of my sexual orientation before things became so complicated? I think it is because heterosexuality is the only normative relationship in our society, and I was led to believe I was heterosexual when I wasn't. Girls are often discouraged from speaking their own truths so often that they tend to deny or ignore them or set them aside. I often felt like I was playing a role as a feminine creature while putting on lipstick and talking about boys to my friends. I thought this is what a woman is supposed to do. Sometimes I feel anger at society for being herded in that direction.

POPSGirls worse at math? No way, new analysis shows We conclude that gender inequality, not lack of innate ability or 'intrinsic aptitude', is the primary reason fewer females than males are identified as excelling in mathematics performance in most countries, including the United States," Janet Hyde and Janet Mertz of the University of Wisconsin in Madison wrote in their report.

POPSSotomayor It is remarkable how many Americans of different states and upbringings cannto see how where you were born and raised makes a difference. Please make a comparison between the population of the center and the population form the west and east. You all know the differences of attitudes, beliefs and way a person projects herself makes a difference depending of your experiences and upbringing. Cowboy Bush was completely different from Obama , JFK, Johsnon, etc. One's upbringing can make a person more liable to lean to conservatism or liberalism, be religions or not, educated or not; there are economic as well as cultural inferences, pressures and influences. A person that has struggled and has placed a high value in education will most likely value and understand the needs of the people that lack those same opportunities, and in this sense will make a better judge when confronted with EVALUATING the specific challenges that have to be met by the law . Don't tell

POPSThe tick of the male biological clock? from the article: "He believes the risks for children of older fathers will eventually be seen to be as noteworthy as the risks facing older mothers. “It’s going to be more and more of an issue to society,” he notes." One of the most important differences that affect the male/female barrier is the biological clock tick and tack. We all remember Charlie Chaplin as an exemplar of late parenthood. And here we begin to observe that it ain't so exactly. it is still not the same as with females in many aspects, one of them in this context is the fact that for females it is a yes or no question of fertility at some point. Nevertheless it does potentially carry a crack of more understanding , maybe, to the other gender? not to mention the possible technological horizon of reproduction being departed from its crude specific and local biological origin. Fascinating....

POPSHow Sex Motivates Us: This lecture reviews what evolutionary theories and recent studies in psychology can tell us about sex and gender differences. Students will hear how psychology can help explain many of the differences that exist in whom we find attractive, what we desire in a mate, and sexual orientation.

POPSFacial feminization surgery: the subtle differences between male & female faces More: The male skull, Ousterhout explains, has more hooding over the eyes, whereas females have a more "open, convex orbit." During facial feminization surgery, Ousterhout pulls the face back from the forehead and removes part of the forehead bone, leaving a more feminine contour. The chin, which in men is wider and 20 percent longer than the female mandible, is reduced to female size and shape…The surgery will also lift her upper lip closer to her nose, allowing for a more feminine smile. It's a subtle difference, Ousterhout says, but men have a vertically longer upper lip than women. It's not noticeable when they smile, but when a man's lips are parted a few millimeters, the upper teeth are hidden.…the most obvious factor and biggest giveaway for transsexuals is the thyroid cartilage, or Adam's apple…Ousterhout approaches it through an incision just behind the chin to leave less obvious scarring.

POPSAdmirals, generals: Let gays serve openly The issue of gays in the military became a flash point early in the Clinton administration as Clinton tried to fulfill a campaign promise to end the military's ban on gays. His efforts created the current compromise policy — ending the ban but prohibiting active-duty service members from openly acknowledging they are gay. But it came at a political cost. The resulting debate divided service members and veterans, put Democrats on the defensive and provided cannon fodder for social conservatives and Republican critics who questioned Clinton's patriotism and standing with the military.

POPSIs he sexy? well that depends if she is ovulating :) At other points during the cycle, women will prefer more feminized male faces, as they might signal a higher willingness of the males to invest in offspring. This is a great example to the biases that constantly dictate ones sense of reality! the way out is not easy...
