I need to recharge my cell phone - everyone into the loo!
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  10-6-2009
How much will you do to make the planet greener? How about installing a biodigester to power your computer - pass the beans please? Grin. It really is tried a true way to produce electricity but not usually one household at a time. In India and China folks bring their waste to a communal digester that gives them all some needed cheap electricity from burning methane or just gas for the stove.

Proposed Utah coal plant blocked by EPA panel
jatfla
by jatfla  11-13-2008
I sure am glad there was no EPA when I was growing up in W.Va. and Grandpa warmed our house with the coal stove in the middle of the living room. It's going to be a cold winter for most since everywhere alternative option is blocked by somebody. And I believe Obama promised to "bankrupt" the coal industry anyway. We'll be back to rubbin' two sticks together and huddled around a fire. Ooops! Can't cut down trees either. :~(

A Writer in a Living Novel
Nerfzilla
by Nerfzilla  11-4-2008
Ms. Chute, 61, a wry, direct and earthy woman who favors bandannas, peasant skirts and stout hiking boots, works in their home, which is guarded by a sign that reads: “Woa. Visitors Turn Back.” Neither building is heated, except by wood stove, or has hot water. The compound’s sole toilet is a tin-roofed outhouse. The Chute home does have an industrial-size copying machine, however, and nearby she keeps her AK-47 rifle, which she likes because it has a gas piston that dampens recoil. “It’s very gentle, very soft,” she said. Ms. Chute, whose fourth novel, “The School on Heart’s Content Road,” comes out on Friday, had a surprise hit in the mid-’80s with her first book, “The Beans of Egypt, Maine,” about a hard-luck, occasionally incestuous clan that some critics compared to Faulkner’s Snopeses. “If it runs, a Bean will shoot it,” she wrote. “If it falls, a Bean will eat it.” The book’s empathy and precise observation derived, it turned out, from personal experience. Ms. Chute, who g

New Survivalists Prepare
debbyski

OK--I'm not this crazy yet, but I'm getting there. For the last 3 years or so I've been tossing around the idea of building yet another home, this one on my property next to where my smaller home is and selling my home in town. Only this time, I'm going to invest in wind, solar, and I have free gas on the property. I could practically be self-sufficient with well water and a garden, some chickens and raising my own meat. I can see the writing on the wall and it ain't good folks. :(

Could YOU live in a Yurt?
Newfman
by Newfman  11-30-2007    1
We talk all the time about living with less; Dave lives in 706 square feet with off grid power, a composting toilet, a shower and a full kitchen and didn't give anything up at all to live in comfort and style. When you live in 706 square feet you don't need much to run it; he collects water from his roof, power from the sun and wind, heat from sustainably cut wood. He spends about six hundred bucks a year for his propane barbeque, gas for his chainsaw and log splitter and that is about it. He appears to enjoy it, imagine if more of us lived this way.
