POPSObamaCare endorsements: What the bribe was The AARP got a financial windfall in return for its support of the healthcare bill. Over the past decade, the AARP has morphed from an advocacy group to an insurance company (through its subsidiary company). It is one of the main suppliers of Medi-gap insurance, a high-cost, privately purchased coverage that picks up where Medicare leaves off. But President Bush-43 passed the Medicare Advantage program, which offered a subsidized, lower-cost alternative to Medi-gap. Under Medicare Advantage, the elderly get all the extra coverage they need plus coordinated, well-managed care, usually by the same physician. So more than 10 million seniors went with Medicare Advantage, cutting into AARP Medi-gap revenues. Presto! Obama solved their problem. He eliminates subsidies for Medicare Advantage. The elderly will have to pay more for coverage under Medigap, but the AARP — which supposedly represents them — will make more money

POPSCongress Must Pass Republican Leader Boehner’s Defund ACORN Act
or any other form of agreement to this criminal organization. ACORN ally Representative Jerrold Nadler has lead the charge against the Defund ACORN Act. He has claimed that it is an unconstitutional *" Bill of Attainder " an argument that has been thoroughly rebutted by former FEC Commissioner Hans von Spakovsky. Nadler had no such reservations when he co-sponsered legislation to punish AIG employees who had been awarded bonuses. *A legislative act pronouncing a person guilty of a crime, usually treason, without trial and subjecting that person to capital punishment and attainder. Such acts are prohibited by the U.S. Constitution. Congress moving to cut off funds to ACORN for the next 50 days is a merely a first step. An organization with ACORN’s history of voter registration fraud, tax evasion, and criminal activity should never again be eligible to receive any federal funds. Stopping payment to this criminal enterprise is not enough.

POPSThe Obama-McChrystal Gap He answered, “I’m always worried about using the word “victory” because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur.” … Obama either doesn’t understand " or, worse " doesn’t take seriously McChrystal’s report when it says, “While not a war in the conventional sense, the conflict in Afghanistan demands a similar focus and an equal level of effort, and the consequences of failing are just as grave.” Obama is neither smarter nor more politically astute than his generals. He tried to snooker McChrystal by requiring the general to send three options for Afghanistan catalogued as “low”, “moderate” and “high” risk. That way, he thought, he could accept a lower number of troops to be sent and still say that he followed McChrystal’s advice. But the general " seeing through that (according to a senior House member who I spoke to last week) " beat the president at his own game. The “moderate risk plan . . .

POPSMoodys Warns U.S. Aaa Rating In Danger if it doesn't reduce the debt - either with taxes or cutting expenditures. Notice they gave the administration "3-4 years" so as to allow for an Obama re-election before raising taxes. Then it's all hell breakin' loose for taxes. Either that or let the rating fall and apologize for the fact that we ever had a Triple-A in the first place and appeal to our "empathy for those nations that never had top rating. This would also fit into the progressive p.r. agenda.

POPSThe Poor are not Only With Us: They Are "Us". Wonder where the wealthiest 5% got their money from? Why, they got it from you and me. And furthermore, they plan to keep it. While their income grows, their numbers do not. That's because they have no desire to share that little pink cloud they're on. For the rest of us, it's a downhill race and there is always more room on the Poverty Train. All hail Capitalism! See you at the bottom!

POPSAustralian & Canadian Employers Adding Jobs! ......after a 31,900 increase in August. The jobless rate was probably unchanged at a 33-year low of 4.3 percent. The Bureau of Statistics releases the report tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. in Sydney. Sustained jobs growth justifies the Reserve Bank's decision to raise its benchmark interest rate in August to damp inflation pressures in an economy that is growing at the fastest annual pace in three years. Miners are hiring workers as they expand to meet surging Chinese demand and retailers are opening new stores as consumer spending picks up. ``The odds favor another decent jobs number, consistent with the underlying strength of the economy,'' said Su-Lin Ong, senior economist at RBC Capital Markets in Sydney. ``We expect the unemployment rate to hold down at a three-decade low confirming the stretched nature of the labor market.''

POPSUC Berkeley scientists unveil skeleton that shares chimp, human features More: she is not "the missing link," a transitional creature between today's chimps and humans. This concept has been abandoned: We did not evolve from living champs or apes, but shared a common ancestor. Nor is she this long-sought "last common ancestor." That's because she's too young; chimps and humans are thought to have diverged between 5 million and 10 million years ago. Then we went our separate ways, each taking different evolutionary trajectories. But she's important because she is the closest we have come to this unfound "last common ancestor." She belonged to a new type of early hominid that was neither chimpanzee nor fully human.

POPSTrailing Indicators: Out of a Job, Some Decide to Take a Hike I am surprised no one has written a site or app to allow people to plan all this out and for those looking for hikers to work to post their exchange, etc. Seems like it would be a nice little business, of course one would need to plan and schedule all this out before they hit the trail.

POPSIsraeli President Calls Deal on Kidnapped Soldier 'Close' Asked about that decision, Peres told Fox News, “You’re right. It is a very difficult decision and it’s very painful. But, according to our set of values and to our way of life " the life of a single person is worth the whole world. We take care of every individual as though he would be the collective sum of many people.” Peres also said Sunday that Israel will "reply immediately" if attacked by Hamas " one day after after Israel Air Force planes bombed a tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip in response to a Qassam rocket fired by Palestinian militants into an Israeli town early Saturday. "They know immediately there will be retaliation," he said. "There is an unwritten game between us and them. They know if they won’t respect it, they will pay heavily.”

POPSObama grossly overplaying his hand With the Obama administration, a similar unraveling is well underway and gathering momentum. Voters are increasingly restive. The country is souring on Obama’s gargantuan policy ambitions. The sense is growing that he has grossly overplayed his hand. Like Carter, Obama looks increasingly like a president out of step with the times. Like Carter, there is a large gap between what voters expected based on the measured and moderate tone of his campaign and what began unfolding after his inauguration. Obama ran as a centrist, but he is governing from the left.

POPSCurrent American Health Care Suddenly a Bit More Popular
Confidence in U.S. Health Care System Has Grown in Recent Months Monday, August 03, 2009 Forty-eight percent (48%) of U.S. voters now rate the U.S. health care system as good or excellent. The latest Rasmussen Reports nattional telephone survey shows that just 19% rate it as poor. The new polling also shows that 80% of those with insurance rate their own coverage as good or excellent. That’s up from 70% in May. There is a huge partisan gap on perceptions of the U.S. health care system. Seven-out-of-10 Republicans rate it as good or excellent, but only one-of-four Democrats agree. Among those not affiliated with either major political party, 53% rate the current system as good or excellent while just 18% say it’s poor. Over the past few months, as the health care reform debate has raged, confidence in the current system has increased significantly among Republicans and unaffiliated voters. There has been little change among Democrats.

POPSWho Does the House Health Care Bill Hurt?
But, hey, these are all sacrifices we make to ensure that everyone gets coverage, right? Well, not everyone. There's a segment of the public (in the middle class), which will have to pay a fee for not buying insurance, but will not be eligible for federal subsidies: House bill would mandate that individuals and families have or buy health insurance. Any individual (or family) that does not have health insurance would have to pay a new tax, roughly equal to the smaller of 2.5% of your income or the cost of a health insurance plan... if you’re a single person with income of $44,000 or higher, then you’re above 400% of the poverty line. You would not be subsidized, but would face the punitive tax if you didn’t get health insurance. This bill leaves an important gap between the subsidies and the cost of health insurance. CBO says that for about eight million people, that gap is too big to close, and they would get stuck paying higher taxes and still without health insurance.

POPSCA is finally showing fiscal responsibility! Finally, some good news for our local economy: it seems that California is at long last curtailing some of its social spending, without also increasing taxes as it struggles to balance its budget. Yay! It almost makes me want to go out and celebrate! But.. I'll wait until there is some real, positive cash flow!
