POPSHappy (belated) 95th birthday to Jack LaLanne! More: The seeming futility of shaping up the world does not daunt him. "I never think about that," LaLanne says. "I think about things that I can improve." One thing he can always improve is himself. LaLanne works out two hours a day, mostly swimming and lifting weights… "I work at living," he says, leaning close and squeezing an arm. "Most people work at dying. Dying's easy." One of LaLanne's most effective sales devices has been his amazing feats of strength. When Arnold Schwarzenegger came to America in 1968 and became an instant sensation on the Southern California muscle scene, LaLanne challenged the kid to a duel at Muscle Beach. The Austrian Oak was 21; the Oakland Oak was 54. "I beat him in chin-ups and push-ups," LaLanne says. "He said, 'That Jack LaLanne's an animal! I was sore for four days. I couldn't lift my arms!' " At age 70, handcuffed, LaLanne towed 70 loaded boats 1.5 miles in Long Beach Harbor.

POPSA Reason to "Support Our Troops" -- Bring 'em Back Home From Afghanistan!
The troops' loss of heart to fight is intellectually sound. Depression is caused, in part, by cognitive dissonance, when two things do not square correctly, i.e. we are here to defend the U.S.? Really? The war is an elite war and part of a global agenda, not based upon any credible threat to the U.S. from Afghanistan. Nor is invading and occupying a country a very credible way to prevent terrorism, even if you believe the official propaganda to be true. Now the greatest threat to the continued bipartisan-believed (neocon initiated) propaganda (which Obama continues) is this reality of the troops morale ....you know, the one's whose very lives are at stake in a foreign country, and family lives are divided (unlike those in armchairs who promote the war and send them and claim to "support them"). See "Cost of War in Afghanistan" clipmark below. Also, National Guard from each state were never intended to be deployed like full time military in foreign wars.

POPSRevenge of the Nerd: What Media Won’t Tell You About The Pittsburgh Aerobics Class Rampage
Americans are dealing with a lot of hate. Sodini’s diary hits on some reasons. After reading this clip, supported by diary entries, I see a lonely life and the futility of continuing that lonely life. While reading it I can almost feel for the guy but then it hits me, the reason he is not living the life he wants is because he gave up too easily. People find their own reason for living. If you aren’t happy with your life is it really anyone else’s fault? This guy places blame on every woman because he failed to have one in his life. I’m not talking about short term relationships he admits he had, if this guy had had his head on straight then there would have been a woman who would commit to a life with him. He is the reason for his failure. He points out his hopelessness and some valid problems that are brought on by the callousness of others, but to take lives because you don’t like the way you are treated is grounds for therapy not a deadly weapon.

POPSIranian Fascism Calls For More Than Strong Words
In fact, they are even telling the EU to forget about any negotiations until they apologize for their meddling in Iran's pure elections, like the provocations Newsweek's Maziar Bahari and all the protester 'confessors' have already testified to on Iran's State-Run Media. We have been down this road before. The diplomats of the 1930s League of Nations overlooked every egregious political and human rights violation in Nazi Germany in order to negotiate peace with Hitler, as Obama seeks to with Iran today. It is a hopeless exercise in futility that can come to no good end. Fortunately, much more sensible heads appear to lead today's Europe regarding the Third Reich of our age. Only Obama and Russia seem to believe in the Chamberlain approach. Yet with the political and financial power each wield at G8, it is unlikely any sanctions would be enacted without their approval. This is their revolution. Let them handle it any way they see fit. But what will most definitely not help the

POPSMore than 800 gun buyers on terrorist watch list
The futility of ‘government control’ The terrorist watch list is becoming a joke. There are children, a retired ANG General (and commercial pilot) on the list: http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/08/19/tsa.watch.list/index.html The sheer size of the list makes it a joke: http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2009-03-10-watchlist_N.htm can there really be this many terrorists living in the US? This list has become a witch hunt reminiscent of the McCarthy era. Terrorists are the new Red Scare. If someone on the terrorist watch list is allowed to buy a gun and then kills people with it shouldn’t the US government be held responsible much like a bartender serving a drink to a drunk who then gets in his car a kills someone? They claim they want to protect us and then don’t communicate between departments. Seems pretty futile to me. This is a means for the FBI to get that database of everyone in the US it has wants so badly. http://www.contumacy.org/bbs/index.pl?noframes;read=7839

POPS The "Dirty Harry" Theory of Governance -- Do You Feel Lucky?
When America's Founders revolted against "taxation without representation," this is precisely the kind of kingly diktat they had in mind. As Peter Glaser, an environmental lawyer at Troutman Sanders, told Congress in 2008, "The country will experience years, if not decades, of regulatory agony, as EPA will be required to undertake numerous, controversial, time-consuming, expensive and difficult regulatory proceedings, all of which ultimately will be litigated." Greenhouse gases mix in the atmosphere, and it doesn't matter where they come from. A ton of emissions from Ohio has the same effect on global CO2 as a ton emitted in China; and even if Ohio figured out a way to reduce its emissions to zero, it would still have no control over the carbon content in its ambient air. But under the law, EPA would be required to severely punish Ohio -- and every state -- for not complying with NAAQS. The EPA took the highly unusual step of not accompanying its endangerment finding with

POPSPalestinian population up 30 pct in a decade-census Jews do everything backwards. They write from right to left, and when they commit "genocide", the population being "exterminated" increases by 30% in 10 years. Israel’s population of 7.3 million is smaller than that of Virginia. More than twenty percent – nearly 1.5 million – are Arabs while five percent is composed of other ethnic minorities. That means that there are 5.5 million Jews in Israel. That figure represents a miniscule portion of the overall population of the Middle East, which stands at some 230 million. In light of this, it is hard to believe that the tiny Jewish remnant is somehow responsible for all of the region’s problems.

POPSShould Marijuana Ban Go Up in Smoke?
Although this is considered a 'back burner,' issue in the more real world of lying to lead a nation into false wars or the SuperRich & Wall St. speculators ripping off untold trillions the futility and hyprocracy of this always comes around again and again. The prime illegal use of drugs is of prescription drugs. One of the drugs that does the most damage to self and society is booze. The War on Weed is a failure, will always be a failure, and it's main use thus far appears to be to give permission for USA covert wars in Central and South America and put hundreds of thousands of those who might tend to be domestic 'social dissidents,' in jail. Now, too, it's being added to one of the reasons to kill people in Afghanistan; gotta stop them from growing drugs. If anyone is seriously interested in reducing interest in drugs then all drug advertising (pot or pills or booze, etc.) should be banned from TV. If you want to stop drug abuse stop promoting drug use. Try that 'D

POPSWhy Are We Still at War? "This war, if it proliferates over the next decade, could prove worse in one respect than any conflict we have yet experienced," Norman Mailer wrote in his book "Why Are We at War?" six years ago. "It is that we will never know just what we are fighting for. It is not enough to say we are against terrorism. Of course we are. In America, who is not? But terrorism compared to more conventional kinds of war is formless, and it is hard to feel righteous when in combat with a void..." Anticipating futility and destruction that would be enormous and endless, Mailer told an interviewer in late 2002: "This war is so unbalanced in so many ways, so much power on one side, so much true hatred on the other, so much technology for us, so much potential terrorism on the other, that the damages cannot be estimated. It is bad to enter a war that offers no clear avenue to conclusion. ... There will always be someone left to act as a terrorist."

POPSThe self-confessed pointlessness of Richard Dawkins If Dawkins really believes this, why does he bother writing anything at all (well, yes, he probably likes the money) ? There does not seem much point in writing about a meaningless universe. I can only presume that he derives some sort of meaning in conveying to the rest of us believing idiots the futility of our existence ! I am glad that I do not possess his level of IQ, if this is what it produces... Ignorance is bliss !

The Video Rocks!: Lazywall - Back To The Cradle @ 10th anniversary L'Boulevard '08 21/06 at the Stade de l'Etoile, Casablanca Morocco , I hope that this has piqued your interest and you will go on to read the book. No one is saying that Metal will prove to be the saviour of World Peace ... However it is worth remembering in this context a quote from a remarkable speech by John F Kennedy in Cape Town in 1966 - "The road is strewn with many dangers....First is the danger of futility; the belief there is nothing one man or one woman can do against the enormous array of the World's ills...Yet...each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, these ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest of walls of oppression and resistance"

POPSThe Afgan Quaigmire “I hate war,” said Dwight Eisenhower, “as only a soldier who has lived it can, as only one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.” Our interest in Afghanistan is to prevent it from becoming a haven for terrorists bent on attacking us. That does not require the scale of military operations that the incoming administration is contemplating. It does not require a wholesale occupation. f Mr. Obama does send more troops to Afghanistan, he should go on television and tell the American people, in the clearest possible language, what he is trying to achieve. He should spell out the mission’s goals, and lay out an exit strategy."

POPSIran orders Muslims to defend Palestinians
Ayatollah Khamenei, can you suspend your blind hatred for all things not you and entertain this logic? “defend the … defenseless people in Gaza”? Hamas began lobbing rockets into Israel after agreeing to a cease-fire. How about holding them to account for their part in triggering this latest atrocity? “martyr”? You are encouraging the violence and dishonor of those who chose to break a cease-fire agreement formed to finally bring an end to this senseless feud, by telling others that they will be held in a position of honor for committing violence. And you claim that God is on your side? A just God does not condone the killing of anyone. Saying the Zionists are attacking innocents in a barbaric manner? This is very hypocritical. Hamas are not ‘innocents’ and you sanction ‘barbaric’ methods to enforce your own laws. I don’t condone violence from either side. Just agree to disagree, and stop the killing. Point blame all you want, but stop the killing.

POPSEinstein, insanity and the war on drugs We have wasted countless billions of dollars trying to enforce a failed policy. We should have learned from the dismal and costly failure of prohibition that the government cannot and should not dictate what people do to themselves. Legalize drugs and regulate them just as alcohol and tobacco.is now regulated. Education is a much more sane and humane method of countering substance abuse than prison and murder on the streets. Illegal drug traffiking is supporting criminal gangs, Taliban and al Qaeda. Where is the sanity in this? Our health is more threatened by processed foods than what marijuana does to us. People will always need their occassional 'escape from reality' or a little something to 'take the edge off'. Wars should not be funded, prisons should not be filled and people should not die to support a demand that clearly will not be controlled.

POPSWho is a guru? When the mind comes upon that silence...everything is a guru, the dead leaf on the dusty earth, the death of a dog on the street, the changing seasons, the tears of an orphan whose parents have been killed by terrorists, the helplessness of man, the heavy structure of sorrow that we all carry...everything and everyone is a guru...where else can a guru be found, if not in our day to day life. The territory of life, the mirror of relationship, the ephemeral, transient world where everything is dying, burning, perishing...do we need any other guru?
