The First American Patent - Turning Ash Into Gold
Rustee

We don't get the potassium salts we need from wood anymore. But for a long time, Hopkins had put us at the center of a great chemical process industry. So our first patent was one of the great American patents after all.

Scientists Predict When World Will End
Newfman
by Newfman  2-25-2008
Is there any way our future descendants can save themselves? Why, yes, explains Smith. He cites a recent study emanating from the University of California, Santa Cruz. It proposes taming an asteroid to swing by the Earth every few thousand years, slowly nudging the Earth into higher solar orbit, enough to outpace the sun's own outward growth. "This sounds like science fiction," says Smith. "But it seems that the energy requirements are just about possible and the technology could be developed over the next few centuries."

The "Healing Crisis" Phenomenon - "Herx, Don't It??"
abandonedbywolves
by abandonedbywolves  11-4-2007
Scott Sonnon recently wrote an excellent post on his "fighters blog" on the causes and nature of the "MetCon" phenomenon that many hard core trainers, yogis, martial artists and athletes may encounter in the early stages of their conditioning programs. Interestingly, this can also happen in bodywork sessions when a bodyworker "pushes" a client (especially a fragile client) too hard, too long, or attempts to accomplish too much in one session. It's just a great explanation for a complex phenomemon....and of course, it turns out that one of the most important aspects in dealing with it is...proper hydration! You can see the rest of the post HERE.

Cities take the lead on climate change
Togo
by Togo  10-14-2007
It is encouraging to see major cities adopting their own emissions targets and exchanging ideas on tackling climate change. Switching a percentage of the public transit system to alternative fuels is a positive step. Transport is one of the hardest areas for local leaders to control since traffic is not confined to a single city. Without stronger national policies promoting biofuels over gasoline, Vaxjo, for one, will never reach its long-term target of becoming free of fossil fuels. A lot of cities would not even know what they are emitting and the local leaders would remain skeptical to setting such difficult targets.
