"CIA is taking over the churches" ?!
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-25-2008
Case in point: Daniel Ellsberg. Once a seminary student, then an officer in Vietnam, and finally working for the nation's highest intelligence organization, he was ordered to compile all the records of our war in Vietnam into a readable history. Ellsberg got them published by The New York Times, instead of keeping them secret. Otherwise known as the Pentagon Papers, these records showed how America deceived its own citizens and fostered a war in that far Southeast Asian country, of which we are still feeling the effects today. President Richard Nixon, to try to discredit Daniel Ellsberg, set up the "plumbers" spies who ransacked Ellsberg's psychiatrist office. Tricky Dick then used these same plumbers to tap the Democratic Headquarters in the Watergate office buildings. Other former CIA agents, like Phillip Agee and John Stockwell, told their stories of intrigue and American meddling in the affairs of other countries. All had a religious background and a penchant for telling the

Sarah and the Earth--Incompatible
papananook
by papananook  9-24-2008
Her deplorable environmental record was such common knowledge that John McCain couldn't have missed it, even if he napped through his vetting committee's report. So if the McCain/Palin ticket is elected, you should know what to expect. Although John McCain may once have openly refused to subscribe to the beliefs of the Republican Party's religious right, famously describing them as "agents of intolerance," his selection of Sarah Palin is a message (and not just to the party's fundamentalist right): If you thought that he understands the need to kick our fossil-fuel addiction and address global warming, if you believed his promises to build a green economy, forget about it. A McCain/Palin administration, just like the one before it, will continue -- and this is the best-case scenario -- to fiddle while the planet burns.

The rape of South African justice
michellezm
by michellezm  9-14-2008    5
Julius Memela and his ANC gang of thugs have threatened to kill the cartoonist, Jonathan Shapiro (Zapiro). (They sounds like Islamic fundamentalist to me). Please note, neither Thabo Mbeki, Nelson Mandela nor Jacob Zuma have made any public statements to quell the anger or subdue the threats. The entire head and heart of this country is corrupt and the tragedy is, we have simply supplanted one tyrannical government with another. (Please note Jacob Zuma, our ex vice-president and now future president, a man with no class, integrity or even education, and many wives and countless children and very sticky sticky fingers, was acquitted of raping a young HIV positive LESBIAN female He never denied having sex with her (assuring us that he had taken the necessary precautions against HIV by showering afterwards). He claimed it was CONSENTUAL(sic) - with a LESBIAN!!!??? . And he got away with it. But the public have not forgotten. Hence Zapiro's portrayal of Zuma wearing a shower-ca

Mark Morford on the GOP, Palin
papananook
by papananook  9-3-2008
More of this great column: To be sure, it's moments like these that make it difficult not to take some delight, not to sit back and feel the ironic righteousness melt over us like hot Cheez-Whiz over an Alaskan mooseburger. After all, Sarah Palin is anti-choice, pro-abstinence, anti sex-ed, religiously fundamentalist, a creationist, about as friendly to feminism and women's reproductive rights as John McCain is to his beloved "gooks." But here's the saddest part of all: Governor Palin knew. She absolutely had to realize that her daughter's unfortunate condition would come to light when McCain offered her this bizarre gig. To which we can only say: Way to shove your own daughter under the wheels of the GOP Machine, Governor Palin. Ultimate sacrifice indeed.

Once again, the Christian Nationalist will collectively get their panties in a wad upon hearing about this. And in light of McCain's recent endorsement of Petraeus as one of three influential people in his life, this adds controversy for McCain that he certainly doesn't need. After all, he's perfectly capable of coming up with enough controversy all by himself.

Don't Look Now--but the Surge is About to Backfire as Iraq poised to Explode
papananook
by papananook  7-28-2008
The first is the brewing crisis over Kirkuk, where the pushy Kurds are demanding control and Iraq’s Arabs are resisting. The second is in the west, and Anbar, where the US-backed Sons of Iraq sahwa (”Awakening”) movement is moving to take power against the Iraqi Islamic Party, a fundamentalist Sunni bloc. And third is the restive Mahdi Army of Muqtada al-Sadr, which is chafing at gains made by its Iranian-backed rival, the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) The final crisis-to-be is the Sadr vs. Badr one. The Times today suggests that Sadr is weakening: The militia that was once the biggest defender of poor Shiites in Iraq, the Mahdi Army, has been profoundly weakened in a number of neighborhoods across Baghdad, in an important, if tentative, milestone for stability in Iraq. Don’t believe it. Sadr’s rivals, ISCI, don’t have anything like the popular base that Sadr has. And underneath Sadr is a volatile mix of neighborhood, local and regional militias, mosques, and econom

Creationist Shows His Stuff
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  7-7-2008
Here's a pretty typical tirade by a fundamentalist Creationist that pretty much touches on all the points that Creationists get wrong all the time. About the only point he makes is that he's pretty ignorant about science and adheres to the talking points of the conservative right. My question is how many of these proselytizers will have to be proven wrong before they're eventually shamed into admitting that they've been lied to. The sad part is that many certainly have children who are also subjected to these ignorant views thus the ignorance is allowed to be passed along generational lines.

Courage of the flip-flop: Has McCain got it?
righthand
by righthand  7-5-2008    2
Like when it was demonstrated to him that his religious companions were bigots that advocated murder. Was it cowardice or courage or the pope and the Catholics that made him have such a radical change of mind and dump his fundamentalist 'friends'? Apparently they have dumped him back. Hagee has put out a statement saying that he withdraws his endorsement from McCain because he has “become a distraction in what should be a national debate about important issues.” It takes one type of courage to drop bombs from the sky. Another altogether to order men into battle. A far greater courage to bring home the troops. Which courage does McCain have? Bush landed on a carrier. He wore the uniform. Did he demonstrate any courage?
