Sleep Amnesia: Why Do We Forget Our Dreams?
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  11-9-2009
The Mind in Sleep: Psychology and Psychophysiology mentions dream kinesthesia as a potential suspect. It happens when we lose the physical movements in our sleep as soon as we physically move after waking up (such as when we reach for the alarm clock). Another possibility is that our memories are formed through repetition and finding connections to other parts of our lives. So when dreams are especially unique (read: crazy) or too undefined to be relatable, it’s harder to tie them to real-life events and remember them. Christof Koch, points out the incongruity between our brains’ being so active during REM sleep (the deep-sleep stage in our sleep cycles) and only vaguely recalling dream details when we awaken. brain waves that roll through during deep sleep may impede information processing. This is a more scientific approach to the brain-recall conundrum.

Too Much Nuance, Projection & Cognitive Dissonance, Not Enough Power

All of which is a way of saying that nasty George W. Bush is no longer around with all his self-righteous swagger, and that with (as Obama did not fail to note) the first African-American installed in the White House, America is now on the same page with the rest of the world. Much of the speech seemed to be an exercise in what Sigmund Freud called "projection," assuming that others think the way you do. Obama spoke as if the mullahs of Iran, the Kim Jong Il clan of North Korea, Vladimir Putin and his gang of oligarchs, and the rulers of China had the same gripes against the Bush administration as Obama and the liberal Democrats in Congress. Hey, if we just close Gitmo, they'll realize that we're all in sympathy now.................. Unfortunately, it is clear that even in the year 2009 the interests of nations and peoples are not as unanimously shared as Obama proclaimed Wednesday. Our diplomats and those of five other nations are scheduled to meet with an

Scientific study shows Einstein, Darwin and Freud weren’t so rational after all
Koheli
by Koheli  9-28-2009
A recent paper, On Universality in Human Correspondence Activity, published in the journal Science by Northwestern University researchers, examined the letter correspondence of 16 famous writers, performers, politicians and scientists, including Einstein, Darwin, Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx, and Ernest Hemingway, and found that the 16 individuals sent letters randomly following a circadian cycle.

“From an early age I enjoyed paging through books about art and admired the paintings of many painters, ranging from the renaissance masters to contemporaries as well as the few painters working in my home town of Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland. Nowadays I find inspiration for my photography in the works of painters like Edvard Munch, Odd Nerdrum, Lucian Freud and J.M.V. Turner, as well as in many of the classic and contemporary photographers.“ Ásmundur E. Þorkelsson

it is a controversial document. some call it "BBC leftist marxist yellow journalism" .. while other voices praise it as a rare window unto "what's really going on" which is mainly "veiled" from the common eye. i didn't watch all the series but it seems that some thought provoking "images" of "us" may well be hidden here .. (in a up or sub manner .. -))

are You Dating Your Mum ??
kitz007

Of course, men dating women like their mother is not a new concept. Who among us hasn’t heard of the great Sigmund Freud and his much talked about (and today much joked about) Oedipal Complex. Poor Oedipus might have been lost in the annals of history for most of us had Freud not dug him up to show that men tend to develop sexual feelings towards their mother during specific stages of development.

Are Coincidences More Than Coincidence?
debbyski
by debbyski  5-9-2009    1
"What Freud did say, they tell me, is that there is nothing in behavior that doesn’t have a cause. Obscure and difficult though it may be to discover. Maybe a less than perfect understanding of that concept is where the cherished “no accidents” idea comes from. I love my own coincidences and love to hear other peoples’ stories. Or let’s say I love most of mine."

Essential reading
rgentry7
by rgentry7  5-6-2009
Very important text for relating psychoanalysis to concrete materials, which very often makes what many skeptics, i.e., often those who either have not read Lacan and Freud, don't understand them, or simply do not recognize a metaphor when they see one: take the Oedipal Complex. Freud's theories are filled with problems as a result of 19th century biologism and psychologism. Hence the importance of Lacan, who gave Freud's theories a philosophical underpinning. Alas, he is more misunderstood than Freud, primarily because people will not take the effort to engage his texts in a responsible fashion. Enough of the soap box.

Brilliant documentary series. The first is about how Freud's psychology was used both to create the mass market and fascist propaganda. Edward Bernaise must be the most important person that have never heard of. Click 'online' to see on YouTube. I don't remember seeing them in the main BBC schedule.
