POPSEven more lies, damned lies and stimulus jobs So we've now seen reports of goosing stimulus job stats in Georgia, Illinois, Wisconsin, California, New Hampshire, Florida, Ohio, New Jersey, Virginia and Texas. (Ed Morrissey at Hot Air has more thoughts on the California story, as well as a round-up of some of the other state reports on stimulus chicanery.) At first the White House was owning up to "persisting errors" in the stimulus jobs data -- but when all the supposed errors seem to create the illusion of more jobs and are widespread from coast to coast, it sure looks like a deliberate ruse to hide the stimulus' clear failings. The White House needs to explain how this is happening before it turns into a full-fledged scandal.

POPSBiden and COPS (IACP program) Communitarian
Wonder why the "COPS" have gone hog-wild? Our police force is beyond federalized. Pictyure them with blue helmets and it begins to make a lot more sense. "During debates, in interviews and in his campaign literature, Biden contends he was crucial to the crime decline because he sponsored legislation in 1994 creating the Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, program that was designed to put 100,000 more sworn officers on the streets through 2001." http://www.sptimes.com/2007/11/05/Worldandnation/Biden_stretches_COPS_.shtml A review of the COPS-funded evaluation by the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO, later renamed the Government Accountability Office) severely criticized the authors’ methodology and concluded: We cannot agree…that their 2001 study shows that some COPS grants (hiring and innovative) significantly reduced crime because, among other things, important variables were omitted from their analyses, the analytic models were misspecified, and the sample

POPSBook Review: Warren Cohen on China's "Factory Girls" “Factory Girls” tells of the women of Dongguan, two in particular—the conditions in which they live and work, their aspirations, how they are changed by their experiences, and what these changes mean for China This is basically what happened in America during WWII when women joined the work force to fill the jobs left behind by men going to war. And the U.S. has not been the same since. China can expect a huge change in values and culture. Oh, and learning history in order to serve China, right. Trust me, this revolution is going to produce more people who will serve themselves before they ‘serve China’.

POPSState Plans to Spray LBAM Pesticide from Northern Bay Area to Santa Cruz and Monterey
I think using a " State of emergency" to force people to be sprayed with chemicals is simply a test to see how much opposition they get. This has been tried in Australia and was a complete failure. There are very few light brown apple moths here. Maybe its the conspiracy side of me that thinks spraying the most liberal cities in the US is test to see how much they can get away with. The City Council here is suing to try and halt the spraying, yet they are offering no shelter for the homeless on nights when they spray. Instead they are using it is a political tool to gain support. If they truly cared for the health of the people, they would protect the most vulnerable first, but they wont. Spraying under a "state of emergency" is ridicules, as an emergency is Katrina, not the loss of crops that can be protected using slightly more expensive methods. This is about money, fear, and what the government can do under a "state of emergency" -- which is anything they want.

POPSLiving in the Age of Abundance Puts the marvel of modern American life in perspective. Review by George F. Will of Brink Lindsey's new book, The Age of Abundance: How Prosperity Transformed America’s Politics and Culture . Ever since mass affluence, a phenomenon without precedent in the human story, exploded upon postwar America, social and political theorists have wondered, and worried, about the moral and even the spiritual consequences of material conditions. Putting scarcity behind us has been pleasant, but has it been good for us — meaning good for our souls? (Also see How Rich are You? )

POPSThings That Are Not In the U.S. Constitution
The Right to Travel As the Supreme Court notes in Saenz v Roe, 98-97 (1999), the Constitution does not contain the word "travel" in any context, let alone an explicit right to travel (except for members of Congress, who are guaranteed the right to travel to and from Congress). The presumed right to travel, however, is firmly established in U.S. law and precedent. In U.S. v Guest, 383 U.S. 745 (1966), the Court noted, "It is a right that has been firmly established and repeatedly recognized." In fact, in Shapiro v Thompson, 394 U.S. 618 (1969), Justice Stewart noted in a concurring opinion that "it is a right broadly assertable against private interference as well as governmental action. Like the right of association, ... it is a virtually unconditional personal right, guaranteed by the Constitution to us all." It is interesting to note that the Articles of Confederation had an explicit right to travel; it is now thought that the right is so fundamental that the Framers may have thou
