Food Stamp Use on the Rise in the US as Poverty Increases and Stigma Fades
zizzy
by zizzy  11-29-2009
With most of his co-workers laid off, Greg Dawson, a third-generation electrician in rural Martinsville, considers himself lucky to still have a job. He works the night shift for a contracting firm, installing freezer lights in a chain of grocery stores. But when his overtime income vanished and his expenses went up, Mr. Dawson started skimping on meals to feed his wife and five children. He tried to fill up on cereal and eggs. He ate a lot of Spam. Then he went to work with a grumbling stomach to shine lights on food he could not afford. When an outreach worker appeared at his son’s Head Start program, Mr. Dawson gave in. “It’s embarrassing,” said Mr. Dawson, 29, a taciturn man with a wispy goatee who is so uneasy about the monthly benefit of $300 that he has not told his parents. “I always thought it was people trying to milk the system. But we just felt like we really needed the help right now.” - more @ clip source

When the country was hit by typhoon Agnes in 1984, it launched a relief project that supplied food, housing materials, tools, medicines and bibles to about 25,000 affected people. Families also received loans for seed, fishing nets and new boats, and provided a food-forwork program that offered wages and tools for carpenters to help rebuild coastal homes.

East Bay poverty rates show 1 in 10 below federal poverty line
Lexica
by Lexica  10-1-2009
More: in real terms — adjusted for inflation — East Bay incomes have been flat for two years. East Bay residents make about $3,500 less than they did in 2000 if their incomes are adjusted for inflation, said Jennifer Lin, a researcher for the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy. Lin points out that averages can also disguise the growing inequality the census numbers reveal. There are fewer East Bay households now making the middle incomes of from $75,000 to $150,000, and more people—especially Latinos and African-Americans working in low-wage service industries—are having a harder time making enough money to get by without public help.… Homeownership declined in both counties, which was no surprise to a region hard-hit by the foreclosure crisis… For homeowners with a mortgage, the median monthly cost last year was $2,755 in Alameda County and $2,842 in Contra Costa County. For renters, the median monthly rent was $1,192 in Alameda County and $1,254 in Contra C

Cuting the Ties Between Poverty and Obesity

I had to move to a completely different neighborhood in order to have regular access to fat-free milk. ... When we talk about obesity and the way it correlates is poverty, we spend most of our time talking about pushing low-income consumers into making healthier choices and probably not enough time discussing how we can get food retailers to sell healthy food them in the first place. more @ clip source

Food Is Power and the Powerful Are Poisoning Us
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-10-2009    6
I don’t think anyone disagrees that a single corporation can be more efficient than several smaller companies. However, when it comes to food production, bigger is not better. I am not a big fan of mega-corporations, I think they lose touch with consumers and this leads to them doing whatever they think is most financially beneficial to themselves without regard to their customers desires. It’s the old ‘too big to fail’ mentality. This loss of connection, along with us losing (giving up) our knowledge of how to grow our own food, is contributing to our poor diets and as a result our poor health. ‘Big Food’ produces more convenience foods, typically cheap and fatty, because it is cheaper for them to produce and because we buy it. In order for us to loosen the grip that ‘Big Food’ has on us and to regain our sense of self-sustainability, we are going to need a major shift in our commitment to our health and re-learning how to grow our own food is how this is going to happen.

US food stamp list tops 34 million for first time
jatfla
by jatfla  8-6-2009
Why work??? Food stamps and Obama's healthcare coming so what's the point? I am confident that there are very needy people who benefit from this program but I am convinced that it has gone to the dogs and is beyond abused. Several years I ago I stood behind a woman in the grocery line who had several little ones (and some young adult males) with her. She used her food stamps to purchase milk, bread, cereal, soups, etc... while with her money she purchased beer, ice cream, pastries, shrimp,etc... I was so disheartened and realized that the system was broken. No accountability, no oversight; they are robbing the *system* blind. 34 million Americans do NOT need food stamps; they need incentive and motivation.

Unreal. But wait, Obama PROMISED his taxes would not effect anyone making under $250k a year. You mean he lied? No way. So, once GWB's tax cuts for the rich expire, the average family making $40,000 a year see an increase of over $1000 in federal taxes. Then, Cap & Trade will cost us around $4000 a year in higher utilities and costs (and I think that is way underestimated) Then, forced health care will run another $12k for a family. Then what? Wonder how we will pay to feed our kids? Oh, that's right, tax the "rich" and give the rest of us food stamps. Great plan. Really doubt it will workout for most of us.
