THE MILKMAN COMETH!
mountainpalm
by mountainpalm  10-15-2009    1
While Taylor was at the FDA in the early 90’s, he also oversaw the policy regarding Monsanto’s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH/rbST)—injected into cows to increase milk supply. The milk from injected cows has more pus, more antibiotics, more bovine growth hormone, and most importantly, more insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). IGF-1 is a huge risk factor for common cancers and its high levels in this drugged milk is why so many medical organizations and hospitals have taken stands against rbGH.

A Liberty Issue by Mark Steyn
merrie
by merrie  8-2-2009    1
Why doesn’t Ottawa introduce a National Doughnut Licensing Agency? You’d still see your general dispenser for simple procedures like a lightly sugared cruller, but he’d refer you to a specialist if you needed, say, a maple-frosted custard " and it would only be a six-month wait, at the end of which you’d receive a stale cinnamon roll. Under government regulation, eventually every doughnut would be all hole and no doughnut, and the problem would be solved. Even if the hole costs $1.6 trillion. How did the health-care debate decay to the point where we think it entirely natural for the central government to fix a collective figure for what 300 million freeborn citizens ought to be spending on something as basic to individual liberty as their own bodies? That’s the argument that needs to be won. And, if you think I’m being frivolous in positing bureaucratic regulation of doughnuts and vacations, consider that under the all-purpose umbrellas of “health” and “the environment,”

European Court Ruling spells an end to water fluoridation
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  7-27-2009
Now this is a step in the right direction, it is still highly flawed though as it does still allow the use of flouride in toothpaste and Medicine. But it gives us something to work with at least.

Calling All Blue Dog Democrats
merrie
by merrie  7-17-2009    3
CNSNews.com reports that congressional Democrats want abortion to be included as a health benefit in both government and private insurance plans -- using taxpayer money to fund abortion on demand. This exposes the lie that they want to reduce the number of abortions. Please. The plan would also inevitably result in government rationing of care, and the liberals driving the plan. The plan would result in government bureaucrats, rather than your doctor, having the final say over your care options. Then there's the wealth-redistribution mentality forever driving President Obama -- his obsession with leveling the economic playing field that underlies all of his major policy initiatives. This obsession explains why he supports capital gains tax increases even though they would hurt everyone, his endless appetite for soaking the rich with increasingly confiscatory taxes, and his single-minded determination to bankrupt this nation through no-growth deficit spending. . . .

Sign the Petition to Ask Congress to Defeat HR 2749
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  7-11-2009
"What is missing in pointing out this astounding control, is that it opens the door to CODEX and WTO "good farming practices" will include the elimination of organic farming by eliminating manure, mandating GMO animal feed, imposing animal drugs, and ordering applications of petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides. Farmers, thus, will be locked not only into the industrialization of once normal and organic farms but into the forced purchase of industry's products. They will be slaves on the land, doing the work they are ordered to do - against their own best wisdom - and paying out to industry against their will. There will be no way to be frugal, to grow one's own grain to feed the animals, to raise healthy animals without GMO grains or drugs, to work with nature at all. Grassfed cattle and poultry and hogs will be finished. So, it needs to be made clear where control will take us. And weren't these the "rumors on the internet" that were dismissed but are clearly the case?"

Food of the week: Carrots
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  7-6-2009
Tips for Preparing Carrots: Wash carrot roots and gently scrub them with a vegetable brush right before eating. Unless the carrots are old, thick or not grown organically, it is not necessary to peel them. If they are not organically grown, peel them; most all conventionally grown carrots are grown using pesticides and other chemicals. If the stem end is green, it should be cut away as it will be bitter. Depending upon the recipe or your personal preference, carrots can be left whole or julienned, grated, shredded or sliced into sticks or rounds.

The Fishery That Is Too Big to Fail
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  4-16-2009
Alaska Pollock is the tender white fish used in most frozen fish sticks, McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, and the imitation crab meat found in California rolls. But the pollock – the world’s largest food fishery – is on the verge of collapse. That’s exactly what happened to the Atlantic cod, the pollock’s close relative, and the previous holder of the title “world’s biggest food fishery.” For years, the Atlantic fish industry refused to heed the warning signs that cod was in serious trouble, and tighter regulation was needed. When policy makers did finally act, in 1992, it was too late – and the fishery crashed to less than one percent of its former level. Humans continually weaken every link in the food chain until the whole thing collapses. If we would replenish everything we eat the problem would not be so bad. But we don't.

Hidden Link Between Factory Farms and Human Illness http://www.motherearthnews.com/Natural-Health/Me
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  3-18-2009    1
This is particularly troubling because of the rapid rise of antibiotic-resistant microbes, an inevitable consequence of the widespread use of antibiotics as feed additives in industrial livestock operations. than 350 professional organizations have called for greater regulation of antibiotic use in livestock. The Infectious Diseases Society of America has declared antibiotic-resistant infections an epidemic in the United States. The FAO recently warned that global industrial meat production poses a serious threat to human health. This article contains some very interesting and scary facts we all need to know. I really am not of an alarmist nature, but I urge everyone to read this.

More than peanuts
spirithiker
by spirithiker  2-18-2009    1
The author goes on to demand more regulation to protect our food safety. More regulation will not help. The root of the problem compares with the revolving door justice given to drunken drivers as they go through the legal system. They are continually allowed back on our roads until someone finally is killed due to their reckless irresponsibility. I think the last judge who set them free should be held responsible just as the bar tender who gave them the last drink is. The FDA allowed PCA to continue shipping salmonella-tainted product 12 times in 2007 and 2008. PCA is the drunk driver in this case. Why do we drag our feet on these blatant violations and then call for more of the same type of legislation that won’t get enforced. We do not need more regulation what we need is someone with the intestinal fortitude to punish these immoral characters for cocking a loading gun and aiming it at the general public.

The Wrong Stuff....New Bureaucracies and Government Spending
merrie
by merrie  9-22-2008    2
Banks shouldn’t foreclose on delinquent home buyers. Obviously, he hasn’t heard of how bad loans drained Japan’s economy of its vitality for a decade. • Third, Obama seeks “new oversight and regulations of our financial institutions.” That means forcing new bureaucracies and regulations into the private sector, the very phenomenon that has made navigating our health care industry such a delight. • Fourth, Obama seeks to empower unelected foreign entities to the same “globally coordinated (rescue) effort.” But Bernanke and Paulson have already done the heavy lifting, as the rest of “the world” has done next to nothing. One more global bureaucracy won’t make America’s financial system any healthier. Obama makes a final point by blasting the failure of “common-sense regulation and oversight,” to the financial system.

How much do you trust Federal regulation of food these days?
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  9-19-2008
Deregulation, budget gutting, and over politicized Presidential appointments has led to Bush League safety and regulation of anything that has to do with our common interests and security as citizens and consumer. GM animal products are just another scheme to get bigger profit for already obese CEOs and should be opposed until we have real leadership in Congress and the White House.
