New Antioxidant Combo Provides Numerous Health Benefits
ericgyoung
by ericgyoung  11-25-2009
Ok, now unlike that ridiculous Tastans food sprinkle-thingy I wrote about recently, here's a product that might actually be worth thinking about. It's called Proleva, manufactured here in good-ole California, and it is a unique combination of antioxidants. According to researchers, a single dose of Proleva (and it's taken only once per day) contains the antioxidants found in eight of the most powerful superfruits, antioxidants that have been shown to increase eye sight, improve your immune system, support your cardiovascular health, boost short term memory, increase brain function and return the youthful glow to your skin and hair. I feel better about a health product such as this one, as opposed to one like "Tastans" which seems tailor-made to encourage U.S. eaters to maintain already unhealthy eating habits. By contrast, it is well-known that people in the U.S., for a variety of reasons, do not get enough antioxidants in our diet. Proleva might be worth looking into.

Healthy Monday: Canada Joins Meatless Monday Movement
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  11-11-2009
Could this happen here in the biggest meat consuming countries in the world? Don’t we care enough about our health to cut meat out of our diets at least one day a week? Most of our health costs stem from eating red meat. Most of our food costs stem from feeding cattle. Doesn’t it make economic as well as heatlh sense to cut down on our red meat consumption? Red meat again linked to cancer risk: http://www.foodnavigator.com/Science-Nutrition/Red-meat-again-linked-to-cancer-risk-Study How to reduce your red meat consumption: http://www.causecast.org/news_items/8699-how-to-reduce-your-red-meat-consumption The growing case against red meat: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1887266,00.html

Dispelling myths about meatless meals
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  10-30-2009
The right-wing blowhards getting their knickers in a twist over this is so amusing. Because it's indoctrination to teach kids that anything but meat for lunch is a good thing. How dare they! Like kids experiencing foregoing meat one meal a week is some sort of communist plot to weaken our children and make them susceptible to socialized medicine and nuclear disarmament or something.

Jeff Galloway: Food - the importance of "prefueling" before exercise
Lexica
by Lexica  10-21-2009
More: If you fear undesired pit stops or gastric distress, train your intestinal track to tolerate food. Start with one saltine, or one pretzel, and then work up to a more substantial intake… Even if you are working out for less than an hour, you should still eat a pre-run snack and drink water. Athletes who ate no breakfast, biked hard for 50 minutes and then sprinted for 10 minutes to the finish were able to sprint 6% harder when they consumed adequate water vs. minimal water… One way to organize your pre-run fueling is to eat part of the upcoming meal prior to your workout. For example— • If you run in the morning, enjoy a banana before your workout, and then afterwards refuel with the rest of your breakfast, such as a bagel and a yogurt. • If you run at lunch, eat half a sandwich before your run and then enjoy the rest of your lunch afterwards. • For afternoon or afterwork sessions, enjoy a granola bar or some graham crackers pre-run, and then refuel with chocolate m

Bill and Melinda Gates pledge 120 million to boost African, Indian farmers
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  10-15-2009    12
Oh noez. Corporate America, Bill Gates, is dropping 120 million to help Africa and India. So liberals, this must horrify you right? Because corporations are "evil" in your nightmares or did you confuse it with an episode of "Fringe". Moan for me libs. Moan about America and whine because Americans, Bill and Melinda Gates, just blew your mind. Where's that fatty Michael Moore-on anyway? Probably sitting in Krispy Kreme or Dominoes Pizza stuffing his fat face. I know this news isn't as important as the Christians eating fried chicken at the Baptist Church, but who could compete with a horror show like that. Waaaaahhhhhh corporations......waaaaahhhhhh Christians........wahhhhhhh Rush Limbaugh.......waaaaaahhhhhhhhhh. Boohoo. Cry me a river.

Deceptive Techniques of Food Labels, What You Read is NOT What You Get!
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-11-2009
The FDA website shares some tips on how to understand and use the Nutrition Facts Label http://www.fda.gov/Food/LabelingNutrition/ConsumerInformation/ucm078889.htm Have you ever really looked at what is considered a ‘serving size’? I laughed when I first started seeing this on packages. I had been eating more than one serving size pretty much my whole life, and still do. I think most of us do. The problem I have with eating right is knowing whether or not I’m getting the right amount of nutrients necessary for optimum health and a strong immune system. Most doctors will tell you that you can obtain all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients you need from a normal healthy diet. It would be good if this was the case but because of the degradation of the food supply it has become almost impossible to achieve a diet for optimal health and the prevention of degenerative disease. I guess this is why the nutritional supplement market is so wide open.

Out With the Old, In With the Raw
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-11-2009
In general, if you are craving crap you are likely to be deficient in some area of nutrition. Eating enough greens will solve this problem. Most smoothie bars are serving up so much sugar you may as well be at a Dairy Queen. There are tons of green smoothie recipes online and in books like Green for Life by Victoria Boutenko to help you keep it fresh in the kitch. Get your green smoothie in often and feel the difference. Here’s one from the article: Ghetto Green Smoothie • Fresh spinach • Bananas • Water Fill your blender up ¾ full with the fresh spinach. Add two bananas and just enough water to get it to blend down (the idea is to get as much greens in while maintaining your taste preference). Blend and taste. Too sweet? Add more greens. Too swampy? Add more bananas. You can also add ice or use frozen bananas for a frostier blend. More nutritional goodness at the site.

Some of our foods are poisons!
aklimento
by aklimento  8-11-2009    5
This subject will always be actual. It's our life, after all. Modifying old sentence, we are eating to live, not to suffer from what we eat. And drink. So, better check what you eat and especially how you feed your kids; not force them to pay for our mistakes and our inaction toward crooks, making living on our health. There are many bizarre theories in food and medical science to be revised and as soon as we start to do that as better. How many troubles can be prevented! First of all it is the notion that we can safely eat artificial food, practically plastic. We are not! We cannot be healthier neither with synthetic food, nor with chemical medicines. Even naturally occurred remedies have to be applied carefully. Chemical "revolution" of past century in relation to our life and health is over. One more remark. Please note, that not all toxins are poisons and most dangerous stuff in our food not toxins, which are produced by some microbes, but man made poisons, added there by stu

How to eat to best fuel exercise
Lexica
by Lexica  7-9-2009    1
More: Post exercise…eat something within 15 minutes…the enzymes that help the body re-synthesize muscle glycogen are really most active in that first 15 minutes. The longer we wait to eat something, the longer it takes to recover…to prevent that delayed-onset muscle soreness, refueling is part of it… How we drink can make a difference in how optimally we hydrate our body. A lot of people sip liquids, but gulping is better. Gulps of fluid leave the stomach more rapidly. It’s important to do this. It seems counterintuitive, it seems like gulping would cause a cramp. People are more likely to have stomach cramps sipping because fluid stays in their gut too long. When you take…gulps as opposed to sips, you have a greater volume of fluid in the stomach. That stimulates the activity of the stretch receptors in the stomach, which then increase intra-gastric pressure and promote faster emptying. This is why gulping is preferred.
