POPS Inside Evin Prison "So many people're put in Iran prison that prisoners only have standing space. They didn't open the plastic handcuffs for a day and half, and they randomly beat up people. Reza said the only exception was they didn't hit arrested people directly in the face. He said in the second day some pain cloth people came with papers forcing people to sign them. The papers were prewritten confessions all in different handwritings saying the signer is a member of a pro-Mousavi organization. There were not enough confession papers for all people. All types of government agents came and went in the next couple of days, moving people, forcing them to walk or just stand.A man came and said the detainees would be released today, but an hour later another came and told them they would be in prison for 10 years. Apparently they released some people on that night, but moved Reza and some of the selected people to Evin.

POPSSerotoninrain: what a blog should be I discovered this blog, more or less, when I first discovered blogs. blogging, and the social web in general, about two years ago. It has remained one of my very favorite blogs for reasons I've frankly never quite understood. It's just little daily glimpses into the mind and life of a smart, reflective, and interesting guy. He writes about his job, what he's reading, cooking, his family, and random weirdness that comes over the wires, including -- I'm not sure how he found them -- yours truly's clips. (That's not why I like his blog though.) Anyhow, all you aspiring bloggers, read this guy. This has sort of become the paradigmatic blog for me: short, frequent posts; a wide variety of subjects; fluid, interesting writing; and a very personal and reflective style. Having tried this with a couple abortive blogs, I also have an idea how difficult it is to sustain. Keep it up, Jim, and I'm awfully sorry about Fig.

POPSMilitary probes atheist GI harrassment claim From the article : Hall said that his free speech and religious rights were violated a year ago when he sat down with soldiers to eat a Thanksgiving holiday dinner. When asked to join hands and pray, Hall declined, but sat as the other soldiers prayed over the food. A sergeant asked why he would not pray and Hall told him he was an atheist, meaning he does not believe in God. The sergeant demanded that Hall move to another table and not sit with the other soldiers. Hall said he stayed and ate without speaking to the others.

POPSSharing Data Visualization: data on fast food, Jesus' apostles, greenhouse-gas trends, and more Within days of Many Eyes going live, the researchers saw a big spike in traffic from a user-generated visualization. A user named "crossway" had uploaded a data set of names from the New Testament and how often they occurred near one another in the text. The user chose to visualize the data using a network diagram; the result was essentially an illustration of the social network of Jesus and his apostles.
