There are so many "little" things in life that make me smile. Orchids are one of them. Some of these flowers remind me of my grandmother. She used to wear an orchid every Easter. RIP grandmother. I love you so very much.

Warming World May Mean Smaller Animals
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  7-21-2009
This relationship was known to exist in nature, with warmer environments tending to be dominated by smaller-sized species, said study leader Martin Daufresne of Cemagref Aix-en-Provence (a French governmental research institute). But what Daufresne and his colleagues aimed to do with their study was "was to test if this known relationship in ecology was working for climate change," he said. They found that it's working.

"Many of us know what it’s like to observe our world from very high in a jet airliner. If you get the chance to fly in a small aircraft, you’ll be amazed at the detail you don’t see when taking a commercial flight. If you can’t easily do that, wander through the photostream of Aerial Photography." - http://www.flickr.com/photos/leidorf/

Decorative fencing - Let your home make more beautiful
erricfelix
by erricfelix  6-22-2009
Fences may remain in the background without making a presence when you choose a home, but they are the structures that are raised as an enclosure, barriers and boundaries to protect your homes from harmful strangers, thieves or burglars and to protect your lovely gardens from stray animals grazing on your precious saplings and flowering plants. In fact, fences define a neighborhood.

Beekeeping Beginner - The place to select for beekeeping
brshattuck
by brshattuck  3-3-2009
Preparing To Keep Bees: Honey bees can be kept almost anywhere. They don't always need to be close to flowering plants but that would that produce nectar and pollen. They will travel to get to flowers. Choose a site for bee hives that is quiet, sheltered from high winds and partially shaded. Dont put them in low spots in a yard where cold, damp air accumulates in wintertime.

wildlife in your backyard: Hands-on activities keeps kids entertained as they learn
chara
by chara  2-23-2009
Kids love growing their own plants. Where there are plants, & sources of water, there are wildlife creatures living and feeding among them. Birds are great seed spreaders and pollinators. They are also helpful in keeping the insect population under control. Birds enchant us with their lovely songs and kids enjoy watching them fly about. It's not too difficult to get kids interested in learning about birds as they are oftentimes already fascinated by them. All birds require three things—food, water, and shelter. Provide these three elements in the garden, and the birds will come.

The Poinsettia: A Christmas Symbol Started in Charleston SC

In keeping with Christmas, here is a legend of the poinsettia that dates back several centuries, to a Christmas Eve in Mexico when a little girl named Pepita had not gift to present the Christ child. Her cousin Pedro urged her to give a humple gift. So, on her way to church she gathered some weeds she found along the road. As she approached the altar, a miracle happened: The weeds blossomed into brilliant flowers and were called Flores de Noche Buena - Flowers of the Holy Night.

Thai school offers transsexual toilet
haraya
by haraya  7-30-2008    4
Thailand is well known for its tolerance of transgender men, and they are very visible in everyday life. Sex-change surgery has become a speciality of the Thai health industry, and it is relatively inexpensive; patients come here from all over the world for the operation. Despite their high profile in Thailand, transsexuals complain that they are still stereotyped - they can find work easily enough as entertainers, in the beauty industry, the media, or as prostitutes, but it is much harder to become a transgender lawyer or investment banker. And their biggest complaint is that they cannot change their legal status. Despite a proposal during the drafting of a new constitution last year, to allow them to change the gender on their identity cards, this has not yet been approved. What the third toilet looks like .
