POPSThe Flip Flop is back Same old Kerry. He was for the war before he was against it. Kind of like our cowardly president votes "present" rather than take a stand.

POPS President Interdum Fidelis Let's include the stated reason for the review: Obama is shocked - shocked! - to learn that there is corruption in Karzai's government: But the Afghan presidential elections, widely marred by allegations of fraud, undermined the administration’s confidence that it had a reliable partner in President Hamid Karzai. Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden already had raised doubts about Mr. Karzai, which were only exacerbated by the fear that even if he emerges from a runoff election, he will have little credibility with his own people. “A counterinsurgency strategy can only work if you have a credible and legitimate Afghan partner. That’s in doubt now,” said Bruce O. Riedel, who led the administration’s strategy review of Afghanistan and Pakistan earlier this year. “Part of the reason you are seeing a hesitancy to jump deeper into the pool is that they are looking to see if they can make lemonade out of the lemons we got from the Afghan election.”

POPSThose Who Ignore History... History didn't listen to us," said Tabeyev, who's now 81. "All our efforts to restore peace in the country . . . this was a flop in the end." The fundamental problem in Afghanistan is that it isn't a country in the way the West thinks of countries, said retired Lt. Gen. Ruslan Aushev, who did two tours there and left as a regimental commander. "There has never been any real centralized state in Afghanistan. There is no such nation as Afghanistan," said Aushev, who's a former president of the Russian Caucasus republic of Ingushetia and now heads a veterans group in Moscow. "There are (ethnic groups of) Pashtuns, Uzbeks and Tajiks, and they all have different tribal policies." As a result, any occupation force will spend much of its time propping up a government that has little relevance outside Kabul and trying to corral disparate ethnic groups and tribes into a national army that's often unwilling to fight, Aushev said.

POPSHow To Lose an Argument We’re called racist because they can’t win an argument even with a 60/40 advantage in Congress and the most left-wing president in history. It stinks of flop-sweat and desperation–and it only drives more people into opposition. So keep it up. After all, the last time the loser Jimmy Carter lectured the American people this harshly…we got Ronald Reagan!

POPSQuentin Tarantino: What's It Like Being on Set With Hollywood's Most Flamboyant Director?
you can be sure it's Tarantino the director that's always the star. Indeed, when we meet, at the Cannes Film Festival, he's wearing a tuxedo with a rose tucked in the lapel" at 10.30 in the morning. "I know they're going to take photos of me, so I'm going to look sassy," he says, with the vanity one normally associates with actors. If the 46-year-old director is still hanging on to that celebrity status bestowed on ' him by his debut film, Reservoir Dogs, and its iconic, Palme d'Or-winning follow-up Pulp Fiction, it's by his fingertips. His last film, 2007's Death Proof, was a flop. But before the week of the festival is out, the Inglourious Basterds star Christoph Waltz (whom Tarantino dubs his "partner in crime") will take the Best Actor award. The veteran actor, little-known outside Germany and Austria, plays Colonel Hans Landa, a Nazi known as "the Jew Hunter" and what Waltz calls "with a hyperbolic flourish that matches Tarantino's own --
