Obama on Credit Crunch of Small Businesses
benaloy
by benaloy  10-10-2008
McCain is inept, inefficient and flares in anger when a fresh view is opened. His lack of control over his anger would surely push usa and world to the 'brink'. If he is elected Americans would commit the crime of 21st Century.

Southern Cal mom on trial in gang murder case
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  9-25-2008
She and co-defendant Herbierto Garcia, 17, were in court Wednesday for the start of their trial, both charged with first-degree murder and facing 25 years to life in prison if convicted. Garcia was charged as an adult in connection with Cano's stabbing. Cano slipped and fell and was set upon by the group, which beat him as Garcia administered the deadly knife attack, Lonergan said. Daley and Garcia have pleaded not guilty. Daley's attorney Javier Ramirez said she never knew any of the teens she was driving were carrying a weapon and suggested she may have been caught up by circumstance. Of the six youths — ages 13 to 17 — charged in the case, five pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced to time in the California Department of Corrections' Division of Juvenile Justice, Lonergan said.

Planetary line up excites the sun
pokkets
by pokkets  7-2-2008    2
The equatorial region of the sun spins more rapidly than the poles, and this differential rotation winds up the magnetic field lines like a rubber band sunspots typically appear wherever these magnetic field lines bubble to the surface. They still have to do more testing, but it makes more sense than other theories such as tidal forces, or the movement of the sun around the solar system's center of gravity, which don't seem to have a significant enough effect.

Debate on radioactive dump flares again
pokkets
by pokkets  6-27-2008
There's the NIMBY idea. Not in my back yard. Everywhere is someone's backyard. They keep on saying that we need the dump for 'low level waste' centralized so it's not forgotten. it sounds like smoke to me. More toxic waste needs to be put somewhere, and it's easy to say 'since we already have a dump why not just stretch the limits.-and there'll be a fortune earned by the instigators, while they say how 'great things' can be done with the money, then there'll be no flow down. Is it is a good idea to drink poison as a public service to prevent it being drunk by someone else? If humanity is around in 10,000 years, they'll still be cursing their ancestors. What is really criminal is the number of viable alternative energy sources that have been choked for the sake of money. There's energy everywhere. We just couldn't be bothered looking. I'm sure Nuclear energy is championed to justify the use of uranium in Nuclear weapons.and depleted uranium munitions. Why not dump it on your enemy?

The color of plants on other worlds
Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-7-2008    1
What color will alien plants be? The question matters scientifically because the surface color of a planet can reveal whether anything lives there—specifically, whether organisms collect energy from the parent star by the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is adapted to the spectrum of light that reaches organisms. This spectrum is the result of the parent star’s radiation spectrum, combined with the filtering effects of the planet’s atmosphere and, for aquatic creatures, of liquid water. Light of any color from deep violet through the near-infrared could power photosynthesis. Around stars hotter and bluer than our sun, plants would tend to absorb blue light and could look green to yellow to red. Around cooler stars such as red dwarfs, planets receive less visible light, so plants might try to absorb as much of it as possible, making them look black.<<

W.H.O. Urges vigilance as Bird Flu Spreads
pokkets
by pokkets  12-19-2007
They are still waiting for the first case of human to human transmission, but there is the problem that many of the affected areas are remote, and far from medical facilities, so there can be a gap in communication, and action, and the disease can spread before action is taken. There is also the no-doubt crippling effect of having total populations of poultry destroyed for the sake of containing the disease, when they can be a communities primary source of food and income.
