A friend of mine looks back on one of his proudest childhood memories, which prompted me to think back to the day my team won a flag football game against our biggest rival when I was 13. Jonathan is graduating from Wharton this month, and I can imagine that will be at the top of his list of lifetime achievements. What is your proudest childhood moment?

Pledge Of Allegiance Is Un-American
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  11-16-2009
Interesting and thoughtful article on the history of the pledge and why, perhaps, its use is not such a great idea. Also, though it never occured to me to ask before now, do schoolkids in other countries (England, Canada, Italy, Peru, Japan, etc...) have to say a pledge to their government/flag before starting their day? The essay is not very long and interesting to read.

Ladies of Arlington Never Miss Final Salute
ofcapri
by ofcapri  11-15-2009    6
I HOPE YOU CAN TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS. This story pulled at my heart strings. What a wonderful organization with such great and meaningful values to devote their time and to show respect to our fallen solders. The Arlington Ladies stand a silent vigil at funerals attended by dozens of mourners and at funerals where a Soldier has no next of kin - no friends present to render a final salute. In fact, that is the very reason they attend funerals. Since 1973, the Arlington Ladies have ensured that no Soldier - old or young - is ever buried alone.

Veterans Day 2009: Thank you
merrie
by merrie  11-11-2009    4
They are casualties of war… and as far as I’m concerned, Sergeant Kimberly Munley, who took their cowardly attacker down, is a veteran today. The terrorist enemy doesn’t have a formal chain of command that can sign an armistice, they don’t muster on clearly defined battlefields, and they’re quite happy to benefit from the efforts of deranged fanboys. If we don’t stand behind our professional soldiers, and give them the tools to do their jobs now, we will all become soldiers before this enemy is defeated. Somewhere in the world tomorrow, an American soldier will ring in the eleventh hour of the eleventh day with gunfire. Another will arrive home after an honorable tour of duty, perhaps passing brothers and sisters in arms saying farewell to their families. A mother’s tears will fall on a letter from the far side of the world. Old veterans will spend a beautiful afternoon watching children play beneath the flag they raised at Anzio, Guadalcanal, Incheon, or Khe Sanh.

Evil Ahmadinejad in Denial as He Discusses 'democratic' Iran at UN
merrie
by merrie  9-24-2009    2
Those who stayed had to all but stifle their laughter when Ahmadinejad heralded Iran's recent "glorious and fully democratic election" - a contest that sparked massive street protests, which ended only after Ahmadinejad's thugs brutally beat and killed opponents. "I don't think I have sever seen a walkout of this magnitude," Walter Russell Mead of the conservative Hudson Institute told CNN after Ahmadinejad finished playing to the half-empty General Assembly hall. "It was a speech Adolf Hitler could have given." Outside UN headquarters, hundreds of Iranians picketed the Iranian strongman for much of the day. "He is not our voice. He is not our representative. We want him out of the UN," said Masomeh Ataey, 52, who traveled from Virginia to join hundreds of flag-waving protesters at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza. Ahmadinejad insisted his country is ready to shake all hands "that are honestly extended to us," which seemed to be an odd reversal on his comment Tuesday that he'd . . .

Glenn Beck, anti-communist art critic?
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  9-7-2009    3
More: Fair enough. That’s cable television for you. On to a bigger question: Does Beck know what he’s talking about? Absolutely not, says Christopher Knight, an art critic (a real one) for the Los Angeles Times. Beck was as “nutty as usual,” Knight wrote: He pointed to a portrait of Lenin in Mexican master Diego Rivera’s destroyed Rockefeller lobby mural, “Man at the Crossroads,” but forgot to mention that old John D. had the mural removed because of it. (Facts are stubborn things — even more stubborn than demagoguery.) With comedy stylings like that, Beck is turning out to be the Harold Harby of our day. Who was Harold Harby? A Los Angeles city councilman in the early 1950s, Harby took up propaganda-arms with a paranoid group of right-wing loonies called the Society for Sanity in Art. They made it their patriotic duty to search out Communist symbols they just knew were hidden in that weird, postwar abstract art.

Gunmen kill 17 people at a drug rehab in Mexico
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  9-3-2009
What an act of insane massacre. And this is just one chapter in a multi-volume murderous campaign. And while the USA is 12,000 miles away burning opium fields in Afghanistan -- (while the opium crop in Turkey is used for medicines) -- this goes on in our backyard and inner cities. If leaders DID learn from history you'd think they should know that the policy of Prohibition (against booze) led to gang wars and murderous violence, out-of-control, non-stoppable. But the Drug Wars are a nice excuse for covert wars or sounding like you're "doing good," -- and a handy way to put lots of citizens in jail, esp. those who are more 'non-conformist." The U.S. has a myth/story of the 'Valentine's Day Massacre.' but this is far worse...yet we continue to rerun our old B&W charade stories while vivid reality is exploding all around. IMO: Legalize it. Tax it. Get out of debt. Use the Afghan opium crop for medicines. Stop the covert drug wars. Free the prisoners. Stop waving our flag f

9/11 - Official Story of Pentagon Hit by Flight 77 Refuted
blueridge
by blueridge  8-29-2009
This new, thorough research video presentation shows the foundation of the Pentagon was undamaged, something entirely impossible if the official story of Flight 77 hitting the Pentagon were true. Furthermore, the alleged flight path is demonstrated as aeronautically impossible, with help from Pilots for 9/11 Truth. But the main evidence is credible, hard testimony from Pentagon security police, and witnesses who previously testified, that prove an entirely different flight path than the official story and NTSB alleged "black box" data.

Obama Asks His Left-Wing Brownshirts to Report Any Counter-Revolutionary Behavior.....

A new level of insanity has been reached, Obama wants people who are bad-mouthing his legislation reported. Piecing Together the Dark Legacy of East Germany's Secret Police http://www.wired.com/politics/security/magazine/16-02/ff_stasi?currentPage=all Ulrike Poppe used to be one of the most surveilled women in East Germany. For 15 years, agents of the Stasi (short for Staatssicherheitsdienst, or State Security Service) followed her, bugged her phone and home, and harassed her unremittingly, right up until she and other dissidents helped bring down the Berlin Wall in 1989. One shelf, just to the left of her desk, is special. It holds a pair of 3-inch-thick black binders " copies of the most important documents in Poppe's secret police files. This is her Stasi shelf. Poppe learned to recognize many of the men assigned to tail her each day. They had crew cuts and never wore jeans or sneakers. Sometimes they took pictures of her on the sidewalk,

The world's longest turban – but why do Nihang Sikhs wear large turbans?
Lexica
by Lexica  7-28-2009
More on why Nihangs wear such large turbans: Another part is: During a point in a battle a detachment of Sikhs carrying the Nishan Sahib of the Khalsa was overrun and wiped out by the enemy. An army’s flag is sacred and a rallying image. When concern over the loss of the flag was reported to Guru Gobind Singh he tore off a piece of cloth and attached it to his own turban. He instructed them to do the same and so raised the flag upon the very heads of his brave Sikhs. To this day Nihang Singhs who's knowledge, words, and deeds exemplify the principals of a Khalsa warrior are acknowledged the right to wear this Farla on their Damala. According to the tradition today; it is not something that one just decides to wear one day because they want to. It is appropriate that five elder Singh's who do wear it may bestow this duty and order upon a Sikh who they deem appropriate and befitting.
