POPSA Fire Risk That Clears Security I wonder what would happen if someone packed their laptop or other device, powered by lithium batteries, in their checked baggage. If something caught fire in the baggage hold, that to me, would be a major catastrophe. Like that airliner that went down in the Everglades when the packaged air generators ignited....

POPSMarin Urban Search & Rescue Team: Ready, willing, and able To paraphrase Firefly , "What's that make them? Big damn heroes! " More: They can't just roll the pipes off because its likely there will be so much debris in a real disaster that rolling will be impossible. Instead they inflate rubber and kevlar bags, sort of ultra-balloons. The bags are attached to an air tank and when inflated, can support a huge amount of weight ranging from two tons with the smaller bag to a mammoth 37 tons using the large bag! It takes about ten minutes to free the 'grateful' dummy. The collaborative training provided by Novato Fire District, Marin USAR and the State of California Office of Emergency Services, mirrors the collaboration in the field. When disaster strikes, multiple agencies respond and they need to work seamlessly together. That's why this type of training is so important.

POPSRape case to force US defence firms into the open Halliburton/KBR used a clause in her contract requiring disputes to be settled by arbitration to block legal action – a policy which, her lawyer says, has encouraged assaults by creating a climate of impunity. Franken described it as a denial of justice. "Contractors are using fine print to deny women like Jamie Leigh Jones their day in court," he said in a Senate debate. In legal papers Jones, who was 20 at the time, says she was fed a knockout drug while drinking with KBR firefighters. "When she awoke the next morning still affected by the drug, she found her body naked and severely bruised, with lacerations to her vagina and anus, blood running down her leg, her breast implants ruptured and her pectoral muscles torn‚ which would later require reconstructive surgery. Upon walking to the rest room, she passed out again," the papers say.

POPSH1N1: Sorry, we don't have a line item for That. Creating ways for healthful lifestyle habits to be the natural first choice for Americans is the goal of a $650 million initiative of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be used to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, decrease obesity, and decrease smoking in U.S. communities. And then, on the same day Dr. Frieden was doing his best Oliver Twist before Congress: $120 Million for States Made Available as Part of Recovery Act Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative Now, the H1N1 is one of the more anticipated, slow-moving ‘pandemics’ in history. It hasn’t even really hit and it seems like old news. Surely, some of that $650 million in grants for ’healthy choices’ could have been used to, you know, actually keep people healthy.

POPSObama's Move: Iran and Afghanistan United States between April and September. In his speech to the Islamic world from Cairo, he planned to show a desire not only to find common ground, but also to acknowledge shortcomings in U.S. policy in the region. With the appointment of special envoys George Mitchell (for Israel and the Palestinian territories) and Richard Holbrooke (for Pakistan and Afghanistan), Obama sought to build on his opening to the Islamic world with intense diplomatic activity designed to reshape regional relationships. It can be argued that the Islamic masses responded positively to Obama’s opening " it has been asserted to be so and we will accept this " but the diplomatic mission did not solve the core problem. Mitchell could not get the Israelis to move on the settlement issue, and while Holbrooke appears to have made some headway on increasing Pakistan’s aggressiveness toward the Taliban, no fundamental shift has occurred in the Afghan war.

POPSThe Dust Storm Saga We here are still engulfed by dust and smoke from fires. The dust carried all the way to the very top of queensland and across the ocean to kiwi land. People here have no idea how much is dust and how much smoke. There is a difference though our skies are a white haze - so the sun looks like the moon and I wrote to friends and said, "I feel like I am on the moon looking at the moon's moon." Strange is an understatement. The second photo is one I took today we are almost into a whole week of the dust, haze storm. Personally, I have not been too affected by it. This article from BBC is interesting though. We had floods earlier this year that flooded 60% of Queensland. A good friend here, has a husband who works in a mine inland. The Environmental Protection Agency called for it to be closed down because the tailings dam was overflowing into the main water catchment for the town and all the towns further downstream. It had a pH of 2.
