I think a pretty good case can be made that this kind of situation actually is the main face of the terrorist threat. Not a big well-thought-out plot centrally directed from a “safe haven” in South Asia and undertaken by brilliant covert operatives, but the desperate violent act of a clearly disturbed individual. It’s going to be very hard to prevent this sort of thing. As long as the United States remains a country in which firearms are widely available"for the foreseeable future, in other words"we’re going to be unusually vulnerable to mentally ill spree killers of various kinds, including spree killers who nod in the direction of Islamist thinking. But the larger point is that while these incidents are serious crimes and major tragedies for the victims, they hardly rise to the level of a major macro-level social crisis. POPSNidal Hasan Bought A Para-Military Automatic Pistol With Armor-Piercing Capabilities The FBI dispatched agents from Austin, San Antonio and Waco to the scene, and pressed into service a 15-member forensic unit to help military police collect evidence. Agents from the bureau's Washington field office interviewed relatives, neighbors and friends who knew Hasan during his years in the Washington area. Store owner David Cheadle said federal agents interviewed him about the sale of a FN Herstal Five-Seven pistol that was used in the shootings. POPSStay The Heck Out Of Tenn.-This Means You Bloomberg Gun show investigations showing how criminals can aquire guns without background checks upsets gun loving state officials in Virginia and Tennessee. Bloomberg is also under fire by Virginians in a new ad released by the National Rifle Association, too. But members of the Italian-American community say they feel targeted, as well. One part of the ad goes like this: "Our New York Mayor Bloomberg came down here to take away some of your Virginia gun rights. You see, the mayor thinks you guys are responsible for our New York crime problem." The ad also depicts an apparent Big Apple "wise guy" who strongly "suggests" voters not elect gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell, a gun rights activist. "I want you to do it for New York. If you know what's good for you," the ad says.

Depending on how you count them, the People delegated approximately 35 powers to the federal government and not included in those powers are national health care, the creation of free speech zones, federal gun regulations, the war on drugs, and more.
