POPSImportance of Omega 3 in Fetal Brain Development Our brain is made up of mass of fat and tissues. A large part of this fat is Docosahexaenoic acid which is commonly known as DHA or even Omega 3 fatty acid. Due to this, the developing fetus requires a good amount of nourishment of the omega 3 fatty acids for the development of brain. What the pregnant mother eats is the only source of nourishment for the fetus.

POPSAncestral Whales May Have Given Birth on Land "This intermediate species may have spent most of its time in the water, coming onto land to rest, mate, and give birth. A second, even more complete Maiacetus fossil was found nearby; it appears to be a male, slightly larger."

POPSAbortion Legalized In Spain Abortion was nevertheless widely available because women can assert mental distress as the sole ground for accessing the procedure, regardless of the progress of the pregnancy. More than 100,000 abortions are conducted in Spain each year, and most of them are early-term procedures that fell under the mental distress category. This bill, however, is important, because it erases the threat of jail time and declares abortion to be a woman's right. This is important, because in the past there have been serious consequences for women, doctors and clinics.

POPSPlanned Parenthood: “That’s not a baby growing inside of you” "The explanation of “heart tones” is particularly dishonest. The counselor says it can’t be a heartbeat because the baby clump of cells isn’t viable, but that it becomes a heartbeat at 17-18 weeks. But a child isn’t viable at that point, either. It does come closer to corresponding with the legal limitations of Planned Parenthood’s abortion services, however. As for a fetus not being “anything like” a baby, well, that’s hardly a shocking statement coming from PP, but it does demonstrate the depths of deception to which they’re prepared to plunge to rake in that abortion cash. Of course it’s a baby growing inside of the uterus, one with its own DNA and independent biological functions that start within minutes of conception. Unlike global warming, the science on human reproduction actually is settled."

POPSFood-Borne Pathogens Food-Borne Pathogens are found in many foods, both fresh and prepared. These clips come from an article in the Los Angeles Times which talks about how pathogens from food can cause long lasting medical problems. The illnesses the article touched on were Salmonella, campylobacter, E coli, and listeria monocytogenes. All of these pathogens are serious to our health and with the right food safety precautious and knowledge we can minimize the number of people who are infected by these pathogens each year. POPSBehind the Scenes: Picturing Fetal Remains Other questions arose. How did you know for sure that Malachi was not a miscarriage? How did you know the damage to the fetus did not come from simple decomposition, or the month that it was outside the freezer? Mr. Benham said there was no doubt in his mind that the image captured the truth of abortion because Malachi was found at a clinic dedicated to abortions. He cited the mark by Malachi’s right ear. “You can see that, it’s forceps,” he said.

POPSMiracle Baby: Born Not Once, But Twice!
“This operation is similar to a Caesarean section,” said Alvarez, who is chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. “Half of the baby is extracted " only the part that needs to be operated on. And then she is put back into the womb," he said. "The womb is then closed and carefully monitored for signs of premature labor and other complications.” And fortunately there were no other complications. The baby grew for another 10 weeks inside her mother. "We definitely had hope, but at the same time there are those times things don't go your way and God has other plans," McCartney told CBS News. After spending a month in the hospital, Macie "Hope" McCartney was expected to go home with her parents on Saturday. This type of tumor is a rare and a sometimes fatal condition affecting one in 35,000 babies. Other conditions such as diaphragmatic hernia, renal obstruction and vascular

POPS28 Pregnant Women Dead From H1N1 Swine Flu in U.S. Fortunately, there's a lot pregnant women can do. Even though pregnant women are advised to avoid many medications, the flu drug Tamiflu is safe for pregnant women -- and should be given to them at the first sign of flu symptoms. "Antiviral medicine can be a very important treatment for pregnant women who have respiratory symptoms or influenza-like illness," Schuchat said. Moreover, the H1N1 swine flu vaccine and the seasonal flu vaccine -- the kinds that are given as a shot, not the kind given as a nasal spray -- are safe for use during pregnancy. Obstetricians and nurse midwives are urged to play a role. "As the vaccine becomes available in appropriate formulations, we hope pregnant women and their caregivers will be taking advantage of it," Schuchat said. "We encourage caregivers to either vaccinate pregnant women or refer them to a place they can be vaccinated."

POPSSlain Anti-Abortion Activist Remembered
Drake is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Pouillon and 61-year-old gravel company owner Mike Fuoss. Drake’s family says he suffers from depression and was having trouble with his medicine. Some of those who attended Wednesday’s service here about 70 miles northwest of Detroit wore shirts emblazoned with anti-abortion messages. …. Matthew Trewhella, 49, and his wife Clara drove six hours from Milwaukee with nine of their 11 children. He last saw Pouillon in August at an abortion protest at the Woodward Dream Cruise, a popular event near Detroit that celebrates car culture. “If every town had a Jim Pouillon in it, like Owosso did, abortion would be illegal,” Trewhella said. “Most people play bingo at his age, but here he was using an oxygen tank and speaking for the unborn.” …. For more than 20 years, Pouillon protested outside schools, City Hall, the library and even the athletic field where he was remembered. The Vietnam veteran’s activism . . .

POPSPangolins - On the Red List of Endangered Species "According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, all eight pangolin species are experiencing decreasing populations. Due to an unfortunate superstition throughout China that pangolin meat, scales, fetus, and body parts have medicinal properties, the Chinese Pangolin and the Sunda Pangolin are now classified as endangered."

POPSGender identity isn't as simple as it seems As the case of athlete Caster Semenva (the world-class runner from South Africa) demonstrates, making a final determination on gender is not always possible, even from chromosomes. Think of the complexity this suggests about sexual preference, and the "not natural" argument some employ against homosexuality.

POPSThe Daughter Deficit In a family that expects to have seven children, the birth of a girl is a disappointment; in a family that anticipates only two or three children, it is a tragedy. Thus development can worsen, not improve, traditional discrimination. This can happen in other ways too. With the access it brings to cutting-edge technology, development can also offer more sophisticated and easier options for exercising old-fashioned prejudice. In China and in the north and west of India, for instance, the spread of ultrasound technology, which can inform parents of the sex of their fetus, has turned a pool of missing girls into an ocean. The birth of girls has long been avoided through infanticide, which is still practiced often in China. But there are even more couples who would abort a pregnancy than would kill a newborn.Ultrasound has been advertised in India as “pay 5,000 rupees today and save 500,000 rupees tomorrow.”

POPSRed Flag for Baby Making Industry: IVF Causes Metabolic Problems IVF and ICSI increased Glut1 and Glut3 expression in the placenta compared with natural mating. That, the researchers conclude, suggests manipulations used in assisted reproductive techniques could make offspring who are conceived in this non-natural way more susceptible to metabolic consequences through alterations in placental nutrient transfer from mother to the fetus.

POPSA Little Bit Of Tissue - Which Is Actually Living Now It’s one thing to insist that a "fetus" is an unborn baby. But once the "fetus" has been removed – and survives – what is the excuse for journalists to search for a "fetus" on the lam? This baby that first saw the light of day in such a foul and violent fashion deserved better than to be described merely a "fetus," with all the compassion you would offer a stolen lab rat.

POPSBirthers and anti-choicers: one and the same? More: The birther conspiracy theory works the same way---pointing out evidence and logical arguments only expands the size and scope of the conspiracy in the minds of birthers. In fact the “Obama faked his birth certificate and was born outside of the U.S.” theory apparently erupted in part from an earlier conspiracy theory over Obama's middle name . With birthers, as with anti-choicers, more evidence of reality just gets them further into the thick of imagining even more complex and strange conspiracies. And just as the anti-choicers have moved on to concocting theories about how Planned Parenthood is part of a child sex ring that they’re covering up, I suspect the birther thing may grow in ways that are frightening in their complexity and lack of touch with reality.

POPS8 Month-Old Fetus Cut From Victim's Womb Is Found Alive. "The gruesome discovery of Haynes’ body was made by her landlord, William Thompson, who said a "horrifying smell" led him to her apartment, where he found her body wrapped in bedding in a closet. While her death was ruled a Massachusetts homicide, the exact cause of Haynes' death has yet to be determined pending toxicology tests, At this point, the autopsy indicated Haynes suffered head injuries. Major developments in this murder case occurred yesterday, when the baby that had been cut from the victim’s uterus was located, and a suspect in this murder was arrested. Surprisingly, (some would say shockingly,) the baby appeared to be in good health. Julie Corey, 35, of Worcester, Massachusetts, and a male companion were arrested in the town of Plymouth, New Hampshire, where police found them with the baby."
