Reactionary anti-women "men's rights" groups go mainstream
Lexica
by Lexica  11-6-2009    9
More: Toward the end of her piece, Joyce makes a particularly fascinating point about MRAs' domestic violence arguments: Critics like Australian sociologist Michael Flood say that men’s rights movements reflect the tactics of domestic abusers themselves, minimizing existing violence, calling it mutual, and discrediting victims. MRA groups downplay national abuse rates, just as abusers downplay their personal battery; they wage campaigns dismissing most allegations as false, as abusers claim partners are lying about being hit; and they depict the violence as mutual—part of an epidemic of wife-on-husband abuse—as individual batterers rationalize their behavior by saying that the violence was reciprocal. Additionally, MRA groups’ predictions of future violence by fed-up men wronged by the family-law system seem an obvious additional correlation, with the threat of violence seemingly intended to intimidate a community, like a fearful spouse, into compliance.

Michael Kimmel: Why I am a feminist
Lexica
by Lexica  10-20-2009
More: The biggest mistake we make is to assume - and men often think this - that gender equality is a zero-sum game. That if women win, then men are going to lose. And I think what we have to do is to show people that feminism is a win-win. I think we can do that at the personal level in terms of the quality of our relationships with our children, our partners and our friends, and also in terms of public policy.

Glenn Beck's '9-12' Logo based on Communist and Socialist designs
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  9-14-2009    2
More: Turnout for the 9-12 Project's Saturday march on Washington was a bust; 30,000 protesters signed up in advance (MSNBC reporter David Shuster tweeted that D.C. park police called that figure "generous"). But even if three times that many actually showed up, the number would fall far short of the hundreds of thousands (and even millions) claimed to be planning to attend. Even in that reduced crowd, however, surely someone recognized how odd the right-wing gathering's left-wing logo was. Maybe Beck will explain. Sort of.

Struggling together towards diversity and respect
Lexica
by Lexica  9-9-2009
More: You have your comfort zone, where you are singing in the shower. And you have your danger zone, where someone is physically threatening you and you have to get away. In between are zones of dissonance, where you take risks and where learning happens. In order to learn, you have to be willing to explore those zones of dissonance. Hence, Experience Discomfort. Expect and Accept Non-Closure. It’s hard. My Spanish is pitiful, my Cantonese non-existent, and I don’t like being the one who is struggling to keep up. But it’s essential. To me, my work on intersectionality and race is an essential part of my geek feminist identity. It’s about deconstructing how I feel when I am the marginalized one, and applying those insights to other spheres of my life, where I am the one doing the marginalization. It’s about belonging to a community that does real work and overcomes real challenges. This is what I want for my daughters.

If you Google "Rockefeller Foundation" and "Women's Studies," you will get 128,000 entries.

"Even if every single person in the United States were to change all their light-bulbs to fluorescent, cut the amount they drive in half, recycle half of their household waste, inflate their tire pressure to increase gas mileage, use low flow shower heads and wash clothes in lower temperature water, adjusts their thermostats two degrees up or down depending on the season, and plant a tree, it would result in a one time, 21% reduction in carbon emissions."

My non-feminist approach to Vampire Edward
pennyserenade
by pennyserenade  8-15-2009
Worse than pushing gender stereotypes Twilight is turning an obvious case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder into a romantic character and nothing could be less desirable than a relationship with a person of the kind. I mean it. I have been there. "I worry about the girls who seem, with quite a bit of personal conviction, to put one of the main characters of the Twilight "saga,” the vampire Edward Cullen, on such a high pedestal that they think he is the ultimate ideal of a boyfriend. That he is not. These girls need a wake-up call: Edward Cullen is a caricature of an emotionally, psychologically and physically abusive boyfriend -- and one with supernatural powers no less. It can’t be healthy to have an attachment to a fictional character with those qualities, much less a real person."

Gender And Society
debbyski
by debbyski  7-13-2009    7
I'd like to talk about gender identity in my personal life. As I grew into adolescence and my girlfriends talked about boys, I felt bored, but I wanted to date to be like the others. An other than heterosexual identity never occurred to me. So I got married and it was a good marriage; I had two beautiful daughters and I genuinely liked men. What kept me from being aware of my sexual orientation before things became so complicated? I think it is because heterosexuality is the only normative relationship in our society, and I was led to believe I was heterosexual when I wasn't. Girls are often discouraged from speaking their own truths so often that they tend to deny or ignore them or set them aside. I often felt like I was playing a role as a feminine creature while putting on lipstick and talking about boys to my friends. I thought this is what a woman is supposed to do. Sometimes I feel anger at society for being herded in that direction.

Misogynistic Mad Libs
Lexica
by Lexica  7-9-2009
More: In which woman (bonus if not remotely a feminist) can independent act , yet Ronald Reagan is allowed to die! As the Bible says, verse (bonus points if it mentions submission, Eve, or the Virgin Mary; minus points for Mary Magdalene) . And as ill-defined group such as "some people" have warned, vague alarmist statement . What will happen to the men of the world if these weird, outdated term for "women" are allowed to take control? What will happen to our values? The only solution is for women like female public figure who is not Ann Coulter to get back in the small, restrictive space so that they can return to euphemism for breastfeeding and men can return to euphemism for bludgeoning .
