POPSNigeria-Italy Human Trafficking Rises Sharply Every time I read about this issue I feel that a part of our humanity is dying. There are so many good people in the world. I just hope the balance stays to the good. A conference of women’s group’s was held in Rome Sep 9-10 to raise issues such as rape, domestic violence, female genital mutilation, access to education, and violence against young girls. While the U.N. report says most victims of traffickers are women and girls, they are also the majority among perpetrators in 30% of the countries that provided evidence on the gender of traffickers. Many former victims, pushed by psychological or financial reasons, become traffickers. According to Nigeria’s Women's Promotion and Child Protection, the government of Nigeria is doing a lot to stop human trafficking. But since the numbers are on the increase, I submit that they are not doing enough.

POPSAre You an Islamophobe? If you answered most or all of these affirmatively, you are a vile Islamophobe and deserve to be beheaded as the quran instructs. If you answered one third or more of them affirmatively, you are a borderline Islamophobe and need to receive brainwashing to become a full-fledged dhimmi.

POPSScholarships for virgins? Why should a 12-year-old be subject to an internal examination? Will it even be definitive in its proof? It’s a reminder that this is a country where 94 percent of women have undergone female genital mutilation.

POPSUgandan Bill Would Outlaw Female Mutilation Medical doctors say FGM is a leading cause of maternal health complications like child mortality rate and deaths during pregnancies because the parts of the cervix will have been endangered during the mutilation. In the last five years along, there have been almost 500 deaths resulting from FGM.

POPSPlastic Surgery Below the Belt "The medicalization of sex,"; the idea that there is a physical right and wrong when it comes to all things sexual. "Promoting a very narrow definition of what women's genitals ought to look like — even for those women who don't want surgery, it harms them." Broadly speaking, these surgeries may meet the World Health Organization's criteria for female genital mutilation as "procedures that intentionally alter or injure female genital organs for non-medical reasons." This kind of cosmetic surgery can interfere with advocates' ability to fight forced ritual mutilation in places like Africa. Designer vaginas "are considered reasons for not throwing stones, so to speak, at other cultures," she says. One of the most common reasons women cite in seeking the surgery, some doctors say, is a negative comment from a disgruntled sexual partner. The best way to start enjoying your body could be far simpler than surgery: "You may need a new boyfriend."

POPSTwo doctors in Saudi Arabia want to change cultural attitudes to female genital mutilation In Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia and Mali, for example, more than 80% of women have undergone FGM. Typically, the procedure is carried out by a Daya (an elderly female birth attendant) when a baby girl is a few days old, but it can be done at any time during childhood, adolescence, before marriage or during a first pregnancy. The scope of the operation – which is often carried out in non-sterile conditions using household implements – can vary considerably from removing the clitoris to cutting away all of the woman's external genitalia before stitching the wound back together leaving only a tiny hole for menstruation and urination." yes it still exists.

POPSFacist Feminism Seen with Sarah Palin, seen in their absolute silence on the misogyny of Islamofacism, seen in their silence on the cultural practice of female genital mutilation (female circumcision), and on and on. Feminism apparently means being a socialist slut to women like Jessica Valenti.

POPS7 Terrible Abuses Suffered By Women Around The World Barbaric - we have no right to call ourselves developed nations of the 21st century until such scourges are removed from the face of this earth forever and those guilty of these heinous crimes are severely punished. I ask what 'honor' do people speak of when they treat women so degradingly?!

POPSMale circumcision is a weapon in the sperm wars
In some forms of mutilation, the handicap to sperm competition is obvious. There is subincision, for example, where cuts are made to the base of the penis. This causes sperm to be ejaculated from the base rather than the end, and is performed in several Aboriginal Australian societies, says Wilson. In some African and Micronesian cultures, young men have one of their testicles crushed. Male genital mutilation makes it less likely that a male will manage to father a child with another man's wife, Wilson says. Home advantage Circumcision is one of the less painful forms of mutilation, but it is also less effective at reducing sperm competition. Wilson suggests, however, that the lack of a foreskin could make insertion or ejaculation slower, meaning brief, illicit sex is less likely to come to fruition and lead to a pregnancy. Younger men, he says, willingly submit to having their reproductive ability reduced because they benefit socially from the older men, by forming allian

POPSCristina Odone: Refloration for the power of virginity's sake Well, sorry to burst your bubble Cristina, but having your hymen repaired to meet with societal expectations of a new bride's virginity, or having your vagina tightened as a gift to your husband so he can re-live that first night experience, is not "good news for women," not by any stretch of the imagination. Something's surely gone amiss if we're now celebrating voluntary mutilation as some kind of benchmark for women's progress. There's a glaring inconsistency in the western notion of female empowerment, when enshrined within that is the right of women to go under the surgeon's knife in pursuit of a socially imposed model of physical perfection. It's no wonder we face accusations of hypocrisy and cultural imperialism, when glossy magazines carry worthy articles about the horrors of FGM in the developing world on the one page, and advertisements offering the latest in designer vaginas . POPSFemale genital mu.tilation banned in Eritrea Too bad it is not enforced fully. It is one of the cultural traditions that I wish would just go away. It's is not fair to the poor girls that must endure this horrific procedure. Kudos to them for banning it. Hope it helps the girls/women.

POPSFemale circumcision: a problem in Britain The article says it is practiced by Christians and Muslims alike, coming from Africa and the Middle East. Odd, I've never heard of this until I heard of honor killings, which is particularly an Islamic tradition. Female circumcision was banned in 2003, but since then, no incidents of it have been prosecuted even though one midwife said she treats 400-500 cases of it.
