POPSNigeria-Italy Human Trafficking Rises Sharply Every time I read about this issue I feel that a part of our humanity is dying. There are so many good people in the world. I just hope the balance stays to the good. A conference of women’s group’s was held in Rome Sep 9-10 to raise issues such as rape, domestic violence, female genital mutilation, access to education, and violence against young girls. While the U.N. report says most victims of traffickers are women and girls, they are also the majority among perpetrators in 30% of the countries that provided evidence on the gender of traffickers. Many former victims, pushed by psychological or financial reasons, become traffickers. According to Nigeria’s Women's Promotion and Child Protection, the government of Nigeria is doing a lot to stop human trafficking. But since the numbers are on the increase, I submit that they are not doing enough.

Something's surely gone amiss if we're now celebrating voluntary mutilation as some kind of benchmark for women's progress. There's a glaring inconsistency in the western notion of female empowerment, when enshrined within that is the right of women to go under the surgeon's knife in pursuit of a socially imposed model of physical perfection. It's no wonder we face accusations of hypocrisy and cultural imperialism, when glossy magazines carry worthy articles about the horrors of FGM in the developing world on the one page, and advertisements offering the latest in designer vaginas . POPSFemale genital mu.tilation banned in Eritrea Too bad it is not enforced fully. It is one of the cultural traditions that I wish would just go away. It's is not fair to the poor girls that must endure this horrific procedure. Kudos to them for banning it. Hope it helps the girls/women.

POPSFemale circumcision: a problem in Britain The article says it is practiced by Christians and Muslims alike, coming from Africa and the Middle East. Odd, I've never heard of this until I heard of honor killings, which is particularly an Islamic tradition. Female circumcision was banned in 2003, but since then, no incidents of it have been prosecuted even though one midwife said she treats 400-500 cases of it.
