Service and Homecoming With PTSD: A Vet's Story
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-30-2009
This article is worth reading in its entirety. The honesty and vulnerability of the author is most unusual and insightful. More from the article below: " I want everyone to know that I appreciate all the support our country has given the troops. I received packages in Iraq from schools, Boy and Girl Scout troops, Rotary Clubs and other volunteer groups. I really appreciated all the effort and time that went into trying to make our lives there a little bit better. So for all the problems I have, feeling supported is not one of them and I want to thank you all for your support. Just understand that none of us came back the same as when we left."

MyNPR | A radio legend retires
altaloman
by altaloman  12-30-2009
His voice is far more familiar than his name, but you should catch this story about the "retirement" of NPR legend Carl Kasell. For those of us who, like him, started our careers in the 1970s-80s, these stories are becoming all too common. ___ http://google.twi.bz/Vt ___ "I look out the window in the morning sometimes, and the sun is rising, and the people are going to work," Kasell said. "I look at Washington as being that big, sleeping giant, just stretching and waking up, and going about its business. And to know that I'm working in the capital of the most powerful nation in the world " I feel good about that."

I Must Be A Chauvinist
charlieprofit
by charlieprofit  12-27-2009
I really don't get why this story is a big deal. So a woman is officiating a college football bowl game. In the grand scheme of football games, I don't really care. But more importantly, in the grand scheme of life, why does EVERYTHING have to be gender equal? Men and women are made differently, think differently, feel differently, respond differently. I have no desire to join any "women's only" organizations, or play in women's only sports and I am sure most men feel the same. We're good with letting things be. We don't feel we're being discriminated against just because there might be a women's only activity. Do you think a man would be allowed to play in...let's say... women's tennis? Would any woman stand for it? And don't give me the silly argument that there is already men's tennis. My point is: "what if a man really wanted to play women's tennis"? If he met the height and weight requirements, could he play? How often have we seen women demand equality in men's activities? I

Plymouth Rock, The Story of Thanksgiving
merrie
by merrie  11-26-2009    4
and generally though a very faulty ideology. William Bradford, governor of the colony, explains clearly in his own hand what happened in his History of the Plymouth Settlement. They imposed what he call “communal service.” We would recognize it as a precursor to socialism. Everything " the land, the work, the crops, everything " was held communally. Everyone was expected to work hard, and receive only what they truly needed. As a result, as Bradford wrote, many would simply “allege weakness and inability.” Bradford reported that “the young men who were most able and fit for service objected to being forced to spend their time and strength in working for other men’s wives and children, without any recompense.” At the same time, “The strong man or the resourceful man had no more share of food, clothes, etc., than the weak man who was not able to do a quarter the other could.” Bradford would note: “Community of property was found to breed much confusion and discontent.”

In Memory of the Berlin Wall
JackieDel
by JackieDel  11-4-2009
Today, 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, 57 percent, or an absolute majority, of eastern Germans defend the former East Germany. "The GDR had more good sides than bad sides. There were some problems, but life was good there," say 49 percent of those polled. Eight percent of eastern Germans flatly oppose all criticism of their former home and agree with the statement: "The GDR had, for the most part, good sides. Life there was happier and better than in reunified Germany today." Something in the water perhaps?

Chito & Pocho A Friendship That Defies Natural Instinct
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  10-22-2009
This is a more amazing story because in the not too distant past I had this vivid dream one night. I tend not to be a sleeping dreamer. In the dream, I was sitting on some rocks (so I thought) and they were in a circular shape. In the middle was water and there was a pod of dolphins (luminously shining) swimming. On the other side of the rocks were humans clambering all over the rocks (which turned out to be the crocodiles tail). At some point I became aware that the rocks I was sitting on weren't rocks at all. I was sitting on the head of a giant crocodile and I had my feet on its eyes holding them closed. I suspected it was to keep the "humans" safe. At some point I decided to take my feet of the crocodiles eyes but cannot remember any more of the dream... I wrote about the dream to a dear friend and said, "How amazing it would be if humans somehow learned to overcome their fear and befriend the crocodile." And then I found this - AWESOME!!!

Cheri Huber: The cycle of emotional response
Lexica
by Lexica  9-30-2009
From American Zen teacher Cheri Huber. More: There’s nothing inherently good or bad about any of this, explains Huber. It’s just the way life happens. The hitch, she says, is that most of us have been conditioned to spend the vast majority of our active time and energy working exclusively in the final three steps. Acceptance is what teaches us to more masterfully observe the first two.… When we are not in a place of acceptance, explains Huber, our experience goes something like this: We feel a desire; we act; we develop some type of story about what happened, and generally, we find ourselves right back where we started – confronted with the same (or a very similar) desire.… "The point is not to try to judge or change or stop the cycle at any particular point," she clarifies. "It’s just to look at it and go, ‘Okay, what’s that about?’ The desire, the action, the story we tell ourselves afterward – all of it has to be ‘okay’ before any of it can change on a deep level."[/

Of course, Osama thinks he’s a loser. Now even the IAEA is making him look like an a-hole. That’s pretty bad. On the very day when he makes his big peace-in-our-time Neville Chamberlain chess move. via Breitbart: Iran has the ability to make an A-bomb and is developing a missile to carry it. That’s before we get to the domestic part. The big question looming now is, how soon do we hit the tipping point where he starts to make Jimmy look good? At the risk of sounding like one of the kids on a long car ride … are we there yet?

Christians told to take down green campaign posters that mention God by Camden council
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  9-18-2009    2
Doesn't feel so good when the shoe is on the other foot now does it? Story continues: "A group organiser said: “This time last year we held a Green Fair for the Feast of St Francis, which was a great community event. Our local MP Frank Dobson and many town councillors came. “We had a good deal of support from Camden Council who had stalls promoting recycling and compost. I don’t understand why they they won’t allow us to put up our posters this year.” Mike Judge, a campaigning group for the Christian Institute, added: “Camden’s decision is ridiculous and most people will roll their eyes and shake their heads at it. It would be laughable, if it were not so serious. “But it is serious because it reveals a problem deep at the heart of too many public bodies. They think it’s OK to trample on Christianity in a way that they would never do with any other religious group. That complacency has to stop.” "

. . . . . really owes the White House an apology. This airbrushing was worthy of Stalin. Other NRO commenters at the link admire the assist the Politburo has gotten from the state-controlled media. The Moderate Voice : A case of poor vetting … Funny, that’s how I feel about the Obama administration, too. Aww, this is cute. Fellow-traveling Think Progress , wielding an airbrushlet: Racist right-wing conspiracy/hate campaign drives out smiling, well-intentioned, plucky environmental advocate. It’s an interesting presentation that makes no mention of you know what. Andrew Sullivan, to his credit, notices why Van was hounded out, but finds the gleefulness unseemly. Gutless wonder of a conspiracy theorist quits gutless wonder of a White House in the wee hours of Sunday morning, Labor Day weekend. Good work, Rahm. It’ll be out of the papers by Tuesday. Given that the Van Jones Truther scandal was barely covered in the first place, it’s like it never happened

Shoeshine man catches a break – and some cash

Finally a feel good story. Larry Moore, a homeless man trying to pay his own way, was touched by the outpouring of support. From the clip: "I want to get a permit, I want to pay taxes in this city and I want to be on this corner," Moore said. "I'm the kind of guy this city wants to encourage. That's why you need to give a guy a little latitude." He’s going to get a good nights sleep in a bed. Good for him.

The Far Right is Getting More Extreme Everyday
chestnut501

Having been targeted myself, I realize that this hate is not business as usual. It makes me think that the legalization of Gay Marriage is being used as an excuse for their irrational behavior. For example thay have this rant of desparation that Gay Marriage will somehow or another destroy their own marriage. But when asked how that could happen, they have nothing. In fact, I've heard this right here along with dozens of other people.
