POPSMap of Every McDonalds’s in the Country I just finished reading ‘Don’t Eat This Book’ by Morgan Spurlock (the guy who did Supersize Me http://freedocumentaries.org/film.php?id=98 ) . I will NEVER eat fast food again. It is truly scary what food processors do to our food and what they do to it again to make it palatable. Of course, McDonalds tries to down play Spurlock’s ‘prank’ by criticizing that he ate 5,000 calories per day and did not exercise. The problem with that logic is that there are people who do the same thing. According to Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food nation, his research indicates that in 2001 there were about 30,000 McDonalds and says they open about 2,000 a year. So that means there are probably more like 47,000 McDonalds today.in the U.S.

POPSIntro To Fast Food Tara Parker-Pope of the New York Times reports on an interesting study examining the proximity of fast food outlets to 31,000 of the nation's middle and high schools. In it, she reports that "two-thirds of urban secondary schools had at least one fast-food restaurant within walking distance, and more than half had a convenience store within a half-mile." Kind of makes it hard for districts to slim down their student bodies.

POPSBiodiesel - Run Your Car on Used Fast Food Oil What a surprise to discover that the diesel engine was invented 100 years ago to run on vegetable oil!! Daryl Hannah says she runs her car on used french fry oil she gets from a local fast food restaurant! She takes it to a local processor who filters it for use in her car. Daryl Hannah says, "we’re a consumer nation and you have the power to influence these big corporations who are running the world right now through what you chose to, or not to, purchase." I'd switch ... wouldn't you?

POPSAmerica Is Shrinking Because We Eat Too Much Crap Paul Krugman's commentary should raise a red flag as to the way we are ignoring the health and wellbeing of our children by allowing them to eat fast food crap while we are overly busy working on our jobs or other endeavours. For a nation that claims to be "family first" in its priorities, we aren't really showing it in the way we ignore the nutritional needs of our offspring. I urge my followers and anyone else reading this clip to read the entire piece.

POPSWhats Next? McOil? In the quest for alternative fuels, it seems that there will be a new use for rendered animal fats. Tyson Foods, a large food conglomerate with big interests in poultry especially, is working with Conoco Phillips to develop diesel fuel products from rendered animal fats. While acknowledged not to be a major fuel alternative, just think what might happen if a fast food chain like McDonalds started a conversion program similar to this one? A chain of fuel stations entirely supplied with McGas and McOil? I wonder if animal fats can be traded as a commodity?

POPSNew York Bans Most Trans Fats in Restaurants I'm glad that this was done in a measured, sensible way. The gov't isn't regulating calories, they're simply informing consumers so that they can make their own choices. As for trans fats, there are cheap, healthier alternatives.

POPSNew Record! Too bad this isn't the kind of record that is wanted. Global warming, fish depletion, toxic rain, fast food nation/countries, terrorism, Enron (who's next?), Darfur, tsunamis.............. I'm gonna go have a cocktail and worry about this tomorrow.
