POPSLife In Prison For Judge Accused Of Spanking and Sexual Abuse Of Inmates?
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a leading civil rights group, has defended Thomas and claims race is behind his prosecution. Thomas and his attorney blame the charges on politicians who don't like him. ‘There is no doubt that people assisted these inmates in telling these lies on me,’ Thomas said in April. In an echo of sex allegations made against black Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas, Thomas's lawyer called the indictment ‘a high-tech lynching’. ‘They don't like uppity black folks, and that's what they consider Herman,’ Clark added. Chief Assistant District Attorney Nicki Patterson said authorities began looking at Thomas after he changed a jail sentence in 2006 for his cousin, former Mobile County school commissioner David Thomas, even though the case was being handled by another judge. Other cases that Thomas had taken over from other judges without their approval soon surfaced , she said.

POPSPolanski's lost alibi More: If the plea was withdrawn, could the DA’s office pull the case together after all this time? Probably. First of all, even though Geimer said she didn’t want Polanski to do any more time, I wouldn’t discount the possibility that she’d show up to testify at trial. But even if she didn’t, lots of other evidence is out there: Geimer’s spontaneous statements to others about the rape, the observations of the nurses and doctors who examined her, and Polanski’s admissions to friends, family, and others would come in. Bottom line, there’s a case that can be made even without the victim—and without Polanski’s guilty plea. And if this case does go to trial, Polanski might find himself wishing he’d gotten it into court back in 1977. Because Wells was certainly right. The ’70s are long gone, and today people see rape for the crime it is.

POPSSchool brass facing prison time for luncheon prayer I would be just as defiant if anyone tried to tell me that I couldn't pray, meditate, etc. when and where I chose. I agree if it was forced upon others then it would be wrong, but if one chooses to publicly pray, then so be it. Besides wasting tax payer money, doesn't the judge and others have any real cases to try. This is just plain waste of time and resource.

POPSWoman who set fire to sex pest's genitals becomes local hero more: It alleged the Briton took down his trousers and started waving his genitals at a number of girls. He then specifically "forcefully fondled" the 26-year old Greek woman, asking her to take hold of his genitals. After asking him to stop harassing her, the police said, she poured the alcoholic drink Sabucco on his genitals (an Italian brand type of Greek ouzo or French Pernod drink). This again allegedly failed to stop his advances, so the woman seized a lighter and set fire to the alcohol-drenched genitals, local press reports said. The charges were levelled after reports claimed that the assailant's genitals suffered considerable damage, requiring that he remain in a private clinic in Malia. Travel operator sources at Malia said his treatment is being covered by his travel insurance. The name of the clinic is not being disclosed and is under discreet police guard, police sources said.

POPSHappening now: Police are beating women opposing Sudan dress code outside trial of Lubna This is awful. Protesters are being beaten and gassed. "I am not afraid of flogging. ... It's not about flogging. It's not about my innocence. It's about changing the law," Hussein said, speaking to The Associated Press after the hearing Tuesday. She said she would take the issue all the way to Sudan's constitutional court if necessary, but that if the court rules against her and orders the flogging, she was ready "to receive (even) 40,000 lashes." Hussein wore the same clothes Tuesday she wore when arrested, including the dark-colored pants that authorities found offensive. Although she was required to wear the same outfit to court so the judge and others could see the clothing, Hussein said she's been wearing it every day to highlight her case.

POPS28,300 crimes committed by suspects on bail in Ireland "It is clear that our current bail laws are not working, it is a dysfunctional system and the legislation needs to be revised as a matter of urgency," said Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony. The figures emerged on the day the husband of murdered mother-of-two, Sylvia Roche Kelly, said he would not rest until he got an explanation as to why her killer was on bail at the time of her death while accused of two other vicious crimes.

POPSWomen flogged for wearing trousers in Sudan "Ms Hussein and two other women chose to go to trial. Today she was summoned for questioning and now awaits a decision from the prosecutor on when the case could go to trial. Women in northern Sudan, particularly in Khartoum, dress in traditional outfits that include a shawl over their head and shoulder. Western dress is uncommon. Ms Hussein said she decided to speak out because flogging is a practice many women endure in silence. She even sent printed invitations to the press and public figures to attend her expected trial. "Let the people see for themselves. It is not only my issue," she said. "This is retribution to thousands of girls who are facing flogging for the last 20 years because of wearing trousers," she said. "They prefer to remain silent." "

POPSNewsweek Reporter Faces Iran Trial: Lawyer "Any kind of interview and confession by these people who are being held in prison is invalid under the law and the Iranian constitution," Nikbakht added. Less than a week ago, the Fars news agency reported an "interview" with Bahari, in which he said that he had filed "unreal and biased reports from Iran which were driven by greed." On Wednesday Newsweek repeated a call on Iran to release its correspondent immediately and rejected charges made against him. The US news weekly said that Bahari has been detained in Iran since June 21 without access to a lawyer. It quoted an Iranian state news agency as saying that Bahari "has said he participated in a Western media effort to promote irresponsible reporting in Iran." Scores of journalists and reformist politicians were arrested following President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election, which triggered mass protests in Iran and charges of voter fraud.

POPSU.S. May Permit 9/11 Guilty Pleas in Capital Cases
It is not known whether the White House has approved the proposed death penalty provision. A White House spokesman declined to comment. The provision would follow a recommendation of military prosecutors to clarify what they view as an oversight in the 2006 law that created the commissions. The law did not make clear if guilty pleas would be permitted in capital cases. Federal civilian courts and courts in most states with capital-punishment laws permit such pleas. But American military justice law, which is the model for the military commission rules, bars members of the armed services who are facing capital charges from pleading guilty. Partly to assure fairness when execution is possible, court-martial prosecutors are required to prove guilt in a trial even against service members who want to plead guilty. “Don’t we have an interest as a society,” Ms. LeBoeuf (ACLU attorney) asked, “in a trial that examines the evidence and provides some reliable picture of what went on?”

POPSChevron, Shell and the True Cost of Oil In 1998, I traveled to the Niger Delta with journalist Jeremy Scahill. A Chevron executive there told us that Chevron flew troops from Nigeria’s notorious mobile police, the “kill ‘n’ go,” in a Chevron company helicopter to an oil barge that had been occupied by nonviolent protesters.

POPSBombshell (!) in Israeli-USA Spy Network Case
I'm glad this reporter summed up yesterday's revelations (see clip) -- and he did a good job -- because it would have stretched the limits of my own incredulousness to do so. 1. Serious Israeli spying on the USA. (Not accusation. Guy in jail for 12 years; previous cases, guys in jail) 2. These two Israeli lobbyist from AIPAC are facing trial for being involved but real heavy-duty machinations keep getting the trial postponed. 3. Jewish Congresswoman Jane Harmon tells the Jewish Lobby and Israeli agents she will help quash the trial of the two AIPAC lobbyist if they can use their influence to get her nominated to become head of the House Intelligence Committee. 4. This is caught on tap in a legal wiretap that was on the AIPAC accused Israeli spies. 5. AG Gonzales (this was a year ago,Bush president) stops any investigation of Congresswoman Harmon by the NSA in exchange for her supporting Bush era illegal warrantless wiretaping of US citizens. Wow! This can't go on.

POPSRussian job stimulis plan-will it work? "It is well-documented and proven that subsidising jobs is not an effective method of job creation," said Vladimir Gimpelson, director of the Higher School of Economics' Centre for Labour Research. "When the subsidies stop, the jobs go too." Alexandra Eftivyeva, chief economist at VTB Capital, said the best way to support employment was not to directly support people but to help their employers "restore their working capital credit".

POPSClose Guantanamo, Yes. Prosecute the Detainees, Absolutely
Don’t let this ‘symbol of mismanagement and overreach’ become the making of another symbol. That being that in the rush to cleanse ourselves of the atrocities of the Bush administration we allow terrorists to go free. Jamil Dakwar, a representative for the American Civil Liberties Union at the base, said the ACLU believes all charges against the prisoners should be dropped. Jamil Dakwar is a moron. Why should Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the confessed organizer of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, go free after his responsibility in killing over 3,000 Americans? This is the major problem I have with the ACLU. They would rather Americans ‘forgive’ him his murderous actions by turning the other cheek, to allow him and terrorists like him to strike that cheek as well. The ACLU needs to balance its pursuit of the protection of human rights for the living with demanding justice for the victims of people like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

POPSGingrich to the RNC Furthermore, once President Obama takes office, Republicans should be eager to work with him when he is right, and, when he is wrong, offer a better solution, instead of just opposing him. This is the only way the Republican Party will become known as the "better solutions" party, not just an opposition party. And this is the only way Republicans will ever regain the trust of the voters to return to the majority. This ad is a terrible signal to be sending about both the goals of the Republican Party in the midst of the nation's troubled economic times and about whether we have actually learned anything from the defeats of 2006 and 2008. The RNC should pull the ad down immediately. Sincerely, Newt Gingrich

POPSReport: 22 Kids Have Been Held at Gitmo The report tells us, " RAW STORY count, drawn from the Pentagon's own records, reveals that the total number of juveniles held at Guantanamo is at least 22 -- nearly double the official Pentagon figure." POPSWoman Escapes Domestic Violence From Police Officer Husband I could see and hear from Barbara Sheehans words and body language that facing prison is not going to be as bad as the hell of an existance she was forced to endure for so many years. She has hired attorney Michael Dowd who will be representing her in her trial scheduled for sometime in the spring.

POPSSouthern Cal mom on trial in gang murder case She and co-defendant Herbierto Garcia, 17, were in court Wednesday for the start of their trial, both charged with first-degree murder and facing 25 years to life in prison if convicted. Garcia was charged as an adult in connection with Cano's stabbing. Cano slipped and fell and was set upon by the group, which beat him as Garcia administered the deadly knife attack, Lonergan said. Daley and Garcia have pleaded not guilty. Daley's attorney Javier Ramirez said she never knew any of the teens she was driving were carrying a weapon and suggested she may have been caught up by circumstance. Of the six youths — ages 13 to 17 — charged in the case, five pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced to time in the California Department of Corrections' Division of Juvenile Justice, Lonergan said.

POPSSuicide note targets "bully boy" prosecutor She had imported the drug from Mexico that was used in the 2006 death of former Qantas pilot Graeme Wylie, who she and his wife maintained wanted to die. The 75-year-old cancer sufferer also wrote she felt harassed by a Sergeant working with North Sydney Police. Dr Nitschke says Jenning wanted her views made public. "It was her wish that these statements be made clear so that people might better understand why she took the steps she did and chose the path she did," he said.

POPSU.S. Seeks Extradition Of Serbian Basketball Player As a condition of his release, Kovacevic surrendered his Serbian passport, but Serbian Deputy Consul Igor Milosevic allegedly furnished Kovacevic with travel documents. The Serbian Foreign Ministry said Milosevic is facing disciplinary action for issuing the new documents. "The case of Miladin Kovacevic, who is reported to have brutally beaten a fellow student half his size even after he was unconscious, and then fled the United States while awaiting trial, is shocking," Munter said in the statement. Kovacevic, who is reported to have brutally beaten a fellow student half his size even after he was unconscious, and then fled the United States while awaiting trial, is shocking," Munter said. The two countries' treaties effectively bar them from extraditing their own citizens. But legal experts said loopholes could be found that would allow the return of the basketball player since he fled the U.S. to avoid prosecution.
