Millions in Nepal facing hunger as climate changes
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  8-28-2009
Oxfam recommended in its report that the government and international organizations intervene to ease food shortages in hill and mountain districts and provide assistance during the upcoming planting season. The government should encourage farmers to try new crop varieties and improve water management, and it should integrate climate change strategies into government planning. Ang Dawa, a member of a parliamentary committee tackling climate change, said its effects were already prevalent in Nepal, especially in the mountainous north. She said her village in the foothills of Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, was covered in several feet (dozens of centimeters) of snow during the winter when she was a child, but now there is hardly any snow.

"Drained" oceans reveal epic landscapes

...Big Island of Hawaii is practically little when seen with its underwater flanks exposed. Measured from the seabed, the island's active volcano Mauna Loa is the world's tallest mountain--some 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) taller than Mount Everest. The Big Island was gradually thrust upward out of the Pacific, likely by a plume of lava deep beneath the seafloor. Those same slow forces look to be at work beneath a new volcano off the southeastern end of the Big Island, Loihi. Ten thousand or a hundred thousand years into the future, Loihi should emerge as the latest and hottest new Hawaiian island.

The NY Times Can’t Get Anything Right

It Was 40 Years Ago Today By Richard S. Chang On Aug. 8, 1969, less than one month after Neil Armstrong made one giant leap for mankind, the Beatles took a few steps outside the recording studio where they were working on their penultimate album and turned a quiet road into one of the most famous streets in London. The group spent 15 minutes to shoot the album cover "- an image that has been reproduced countless times since. From the BBC: The idea for the cover of the Beatles’ Abbey Road album was initially to call it Everest, after the favorite brand of cigarettes smoked by their engineer Geoff Emerik. Then the thought of doing a Himalayan cover helped kill the idea, and instead they considered doing shoot closer to home. “There’s a sketch Paul McCartney did with four little stick men crossing the Zebra,” says Brian Southall, author of the history of Abbey Road Studios. In the album photo, the Beatles appear to be walking across a quiet London street.

In 1901 Annie Tayler was the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and survive. She expected fame and fortune, but as it turned out, no one at the time really cared. Sadly, she ended up dying in poverty. Although she made the journey with little injury and few accolades, Annie will still go down as the first person to ride the barrel at Niagara. much more at the source

foxyarse
by foxyarse  7-4-2009
Kenya's leading newspaper, The Nairobi Telegram News has recently reported that of the last 400 babies that have been born in the largest hospital in Kenya, St. Zebra Hospital, that every boy (203) has been named Barack. And of the 197 girls, 132 have been named Michelle, 44 have been named Oprah, 27 have been named Jemima, 3 have been named Florida, and one has been named Okra(?). Kenyan President Kinchopi, which in Kenyan means tall African warrior who can play the hell out of the African jungle drums with one hand tied behind his back and with a baby lion sitting on his head stated that he has mandated that Kenya's most famous attraction Mr. Kilamanjaro be immediately renamed Mt. Obamamanjaro.

The Party Of 'NO'
merrie
by merrie  5-6-2009    1
We know the principles upon which this country was founded. The principles you Lefties are always dragging through the mud. Little things like individual liberty. And respecting the flag. And love of God and country. And respect for our fighting troops. And smaller, limited government. And a dedication to our international autonomy. And the belief in peace through strength. Trust, but verify. Rugged individualism and personal responsibility.
