POPSIn Orissa Christians treated worse than animals, says Father Bernard Fr Bernard Digal is the treasurer of the Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar. He spoke to AsiaNews about his pain over what is happening in Orissa. He, too, was wounded, beaten for hours by radical Hindus, left for a whole night unconscious, half naked, in the forest, until he was found by his driver. Now he is in the intensive care unit in Mumbai’s Holy Spirit Hospital. During his talk with AsiaNews he was given another unit of blood. But his thoughts were with his people and family, all forced to flee to save their lives, now stranded in a refugee camp near Bhubaneshwar. “My heart is filled with gratitude because God saved my life. But whilst I am being treated here my people are hiding in the forest and even there, there is no security,” he said. “There are mothers breast-feeding their infants, children, young and old people, all hanging on a precarious thread, in terror. Even refugee camps are not free of dangers.”

POPSGermany’s industry-led recovery falters Business leaders remained optimistic until it was too late last time around. Even the oil companies are losing money. Woodland is becoming the only sure fire capital growth investment. With good management you make an income (timber, firewood, thatching staves, yurts), plus you have guaranteed natural capital growth, as timber and coppice is cut and regrown in sustainable cycles.

POPSCountdown Begins on "Countdown" Worst, Olbermann's network president, Phil Griffin, is publicly praising him, always an ominous sign in television. While referring to his host almost in the past tense. "Keith has been our tentpole," Griffin says, adding later, "I'm pleased with where we are." Where they are, as Jeff Bercovici points out over at Daily Finance, is way behind the big boys over at Fox News, Bill O'Reilly and gang. In fact, Keith is so far behind Bill, he can't even make out the state of the license plate, let alone the numbers. Bercovici thinks Americans may be outgrowing Olbermann's schtick. via http://bigjournalism.com Countdown to the End of ‘Countdown’ — Is This the End of the ‘Worst Person in the World?’ - Big Journalism http://bit.ly/a1FaNY

POPS Inspector General: TARP Has Created a Looming Disaster
--- will have been for naught if we do nothing to correct the fundamental problems in our financial system and end up in a similar or even greater crisis in two, or five, or ten years’ time. It is hard to see how any of the fundamental problems in the system have been addressed to date. * To the extent that huge, interconnected, “too big to fail” institutions contributed to the crisis, those institutions are now even larger, in part because of the substantial subsidies provided by TARP and other bailout programs. * To the extent that institutions were previously incentivized to take reckless risks through a “heads, I win; tails, the Government will bail me out” mentality, the market is more convinced than ever that the Government will step in as necessary to save systemically significant institutions. This perception was reinforced when TARP was extended until October 3, 2010, thus permitting Treasury to maintain a war chest of potential rescue funding ....

POPSComputers that Understand How You Feel Interesting in light of a recent post on the need to bring empathy into social media (a term some assert as "outmoded"), it hadn't occurred to me that the computer interface itself could play a role, imagine your computer refusing to post what it views as an inconsiderate reply!!! Or, it insists on a five minute time out to discuss your feelings about an issue.

POPSOnce again, let's give a big ol' "thank you" to George Bush for all he's done, all his "hard work"...
Yesterday the airwaves were abuzz re: the CEO of Goldman Sachs taking $100 million in bonuses and thumbing his nose at Obama in doing so. Other reports this week are confirming the sleight-of-hand and shadiness surrounding the TARP bailout of the banks: Specifically, that TARP money handed out by Paulson was not recorded, let alone accounted for or monitored; and therefore it cannot be traced or even determined whether it went to benefit American corporations, let alone Americans, and not foreign corporations or even private interests or parties. With these recent developments coming to light, along with the tea-baggers and Republicans continued blaming of Obama for everything from being born, daring to take the oath of office with unpresidential skin pigmentation, to daring to reverse the direction of the country from the cliff that Bush had so clearly left us heading for, it seems it's time to revisit those days of yore, those nostalgic last glimmerings of a time when we had a gover

POPSFor this insanity [Hell] to be true, God would not God....well, even Satan comes across as kinder by comparison.
But the world changed because it was the most hideous lie; it had made humans miserable throughout their lives and caused them to be terrified to live, terrified of acting or even speaking, and after such a life of paralyzing terror, at death's door it caused untold trillions of humans to be freaked out of their gourd and to go nearly insanely brain scramblingly, nose drippingly mad as they approached the threshold. The Big Lie, the incredibly long cover-up? It turns out that some quite insanely controlling and pompously superior types had long ago concocted the idea of Hell -- this place of endless and unbearable suffering that would last for all time. And then as the ultimate in mind scrambling irrationality, attributed its existence to God, who was also claimed to be all-loving and all-merciful. And if that did not make any sense, they further compounded the insanity by claiming that if that didn't make sense to you it was because you were a sinful (thus likely to suffer f

POPSNietzsche and Christianity This site has several interesting quotes from Nietzsche illustrating his views on christianity. One more below: "Doubt as sin.-- Christianity has done its utmost to close the circle and declared even doubt to be sin. One is supposed to be cast into belief without reason, by a miracle, and from then on to swim in it as in the brightest and least ambiguous of elements: even a glance towards land, even the thought that one perhaps exists for something else as well as swimming, even the slightest impulse of our amphibious nature- is sin! And notice that all this means that the foundation of belief and all reflection on its origin is likewise excluded as sinful. What is wanted are blindness and intoxication and an eternal song over the waves in which reason has drowned." from Nietzsche's Daybreak,s. 89, R.J. Hollingdale transl.

POPSThe PEOPLE are just beginning to speak Fortunately, Scott Brown was perceptive enough to understand the anger and frustration on the part the American people… even those in the liberal enclave of Massachusetts. Unlike even some of his party leaders, he understood that the people had legitimate concerns and had the wisdom and humility to listen and care about the people’s concerns. more at source

POPSUSA Supreme Court Screw Up!
Today the USA Supreme Court (the Bush ones), by the slimest of majorities, 5-4 decision, overturned 100 years of campaign finance restrictions. The rules are crazy & bad now. (Money dominates our elections to the max) It's fulls of loopholes, also. It defies regulation but --- now it's going to be a hundred times worse! You don't have to arrest people in the USA if you don't like what they are saying. It's easier to just ignore them. Or, even better, drown out their voices so they have zero chance of getting heard. What the Bushies on the Supreme Court did today allows corporations to spend as much as they want on elections: No Limits. (Not even the limits with loopholes). No limits at all. Exxon will make more campaign ads. Make their own documentaries. Support candidates more directly. And they will thus be able to lobby for even bigger "research grants," and tax breaks from the government. No limits. Hire some bloggers. Hire people to post on Clipmarks. Gads!

POPSWhen war is peace and right is center Reporting on independent Bernie Sanders, the Boston Globe headlined its recent profile: "Sanders a growing force on the far, far left -- Vermont senator is gathering clout as he takes on the Fed's Ben Bernanke." Polls, mind you, prove that disdain for the Fed chairman transcends "the left." As a failed regulator and architect of unpopular bailouts, Bernanke is despised by the public at large. Even within the Senate, his renomination faces transpartisan opposition from Republicans like Jim Bunning (Ky.) and red-state Democrats like Byron Dorgan (N.D.).

POPSAntarctica and the Myth of Deadly Rising Seas Now, even the notoriously alarmist U.K. Met Office admits that the complete Greenland meltdown to which they'd attribute a seven-meter SLR "would take thousands of years" even if temperatures were to continue to climb. It's therefore quite logical to assume that the majority of the predicted SLR is expected to originate in Antarctica. And yet, other than select ice shelves (which again are already afloat and would have no further impact upon SLR) in one minuscule area soaking in water warmed by volcanic activity, Antarctica isn't melting at all. And with air temperatures averaging consistently below zero and water temperatures barely above freezing -- even in summer -- nothing in the foreseeable future suggests it might...not even should temperatures, which have been falling since 1998, nonetheless rise to the mostly arbitrary yet internationally alarmist-approved catastrophic level of 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
