POPSOcean Glints Could Reveal Alien Planets "Crescent phase is where the starlight would be glancing off the edge of the planet toward our telescopes," says Williams, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie. "That would be when the light is coming at the surface at a very steep angle, and the specular reflection would be the strongest and most intense." Williams ran simulations of idealized, cloud-free planets with three types of surfaces: unfrozen land, snow and ice, and water. His goal was to see to what extent the presence of water would contribute to the light coming from a planet in another solar system.

POPSGreat Lakes Basin Compact: Protect a Natural & National Treasure
The Great Lakes are a finite, non-renewable natural treasure - containing a combined total of 6 quadrillion gallons of water — one-fifth of the world's fresh surface water. The lakes span 10,900 miles of coastline along the United States and Canada. The surface area of the lakes is larger than the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire combined. In 1998, there was a Lake Superior-based company in Ontario that proposed to take water by tanker out of Lake Superior to Asia. This proposal failed and spurred the Great Lakes governors to take action. In 2001, they agreed to a framework to begin negotiating the compact. By 2005, they had a deal to take to their state legislatures...the base for the Great Lakes Basin Compact. It says clearly that the Great Lakes should not be the long-term water supply answer for any other part of the world or any other part of the country.

In 1997, NASA's Pathfinder landed on Mars to become the first U.S. spacecraft to land on the planet in more than two decades. Also in 1997, Mexico's top drug lord died in a Mexico City hospital following plastic surgery to change his appearance.

POPSSatellite Shootdown Necessary? The decision to intercept the U.S. 193 satellite will be debated in the months to come by arms control advocates, opponents and proponents of missile defense, and space experts in the U.S. and abroad. Critics will portray the operation as a staged event that was undertaken just to test missile defense or ASAT technologies under the guise of a humanitarian exercise. They will likely accuse the United States of starting a space arms race and will portray the two ASAT tests as moral equivalents.

POPSU.S. missile hits spy satellite I am not an expert of "arms race" but I have to give a tum up to science. Imagine how difficult is it to hit a satellite coming to you at 17500 miles an hour.i wouldn't be able to hit a car from 10 yards , not to say 133 miles away.

POPSUSS Lake Erie::Satellite::Target Acquired::Says Pentagon Because the satellite was orbiting at a relatively low altitude at the time it was hit by the missile, debris will begin to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere immediately, the Pentagon statement said. "Nearly all of the debris will burn up on re-entry within 24-48 hours and the remaining debris should re-enter within 40 days," it said. The use of the Navy missile amounted to an unprecedented use of components of the Pentagon's missile defense system, designed to shoot down hostile ballistic missiles in flight — not kill satellites.

POPSWarships poised to shoot down satellite They say they must deal with the 'toxic propellant hydrazine I fail to see how a missile can deal with it any better that reentry Perhaps the missiles are surplus and they need to justify military spending. How much hydrazine is there? The satellite was defunct. The whole equation just doesn't add up. The cure seems to be far worse than the problem.
