POPSSome Things Are More Important Than Money I suspect there are responsible loggers that play by the rules and practice environmentally safe business practices. I also know that there are large logging companies that stretch restrictions to the breaking point to earn a profit. That's why this legislation is important.

POPSPassed Green Jobs/ Green NY According to this the program is already in effect, but specific NYS communities have been selected for the funding through a "competitive solicitation process" and the funds should eventually trickle through local contractors, utilities, and community groups that partner w/ a rep sample of some poor people or that have an office in a poor neighborhood. ...I really shouldn't be so cynical, it is just so hard not to be when you can't afford a hot water heater.

POPSYour Favorite 'Natural' Brands May Not Be What They Seem Marketing strategies have been fooling you, convincing you to trust that the niche brands continue to be small, environmentally conscious businesses with ecologically sound practices. In fact, they are frequently cogs in the giant corporate wheel. It is time to question how much the ownership and neglectful marketing of these "pseudo" responsible brands warrant crossing them off your shopping list. And it is time to find products more in tune with your values -- at least until they, too, get bought out by a large conglomerate.

POPSGreenwash of the Week: BP-Not Exactly Beyond Petroleum Don’t be fooled by any corporation rebranding themselves as environmentally friendly. An oil company in particular cannot possibly be ecologically sound. Dig deeper to find out how they damage the environment, especially overseas. Don’t allow them to think that we are stupid enough to believe whatever they tell us. As long as BP operates dirty facilities such as the Texas City refinery, the company’s sunburst logo, its purported earth-friendly values and its claim of going beyond petroleum will be nothing more than blatant greenwashing. If they have to spend money to get us to believe something about themselves then that should be a red flag that they are misrepresenting themselves. That old adage about lawyers fits in real well here: How do you know when a lawyer (corporation) is lying? When they open their mouths.

POPSIt's the smell of the future :) "For example, the aroma of virgin olive oil stems from the volatiles synthesized by olives. By modifying the activity of enzymes that generate these substances, it may be possible to alter the flavor of the resulting oils."

POPSIt's So Simple But People Won't Do It People talk a lot about wanting to save energy, lower oil/gas prices, and be more environmentally friendly, but most of it is just that - talk. People want to appear like they want to make a difference because it's become socially unacceptable to appear not to care. But when it comes to taking action, if it impacts people's current lifestyle in any way - even the smallest bit - most people won't do it. Consider driving 60-65 MPH on the freeway instead of 75-80, and going slower on the accelerator. If everyone did this, the savings would be HUGE - but of course people feel they have to get where they're going 30 seconds sooner and need to show of the power of their engines, so they won't do it.

POPSExxon Mobil gets friendlier towards climate changes Follow the money! The thing that really excites me about this move is it seems to have come about as a result of shareholder pressure. The people want new, clean, renewable sources of energy and via their wallets and their votes they are going to get it!!!
