POPSRunning Doc: What to eat and drink pre- and post-workout French fries and chocolate milk, anyone? More: Post workout, a recovery drink that has carbs as well as added protein is best (in a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate:protein) so as to have amino acids available for repair. If you do not have a “recovery drink” be sure to eat protein in your next meal. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pretzels, tomato juice, and chocolate milk are all good food alternatives to the scientific drinks. Many runners I know love French fries and chocolate milk after a marathon—it works great and you deserve the treat!

POPSOwl brand instant ginger tea with honey Research has shown ginger to be effective against nausea, better than the ingredients in common motion-sickness medications like Dramamine, but with none of the side effects. {{Lexica}}'s stomach is easily upset, so we keep this tea on hand at all times and she starts most mornings with a mug of hot ginger tea with half a lemon squeezed into it. And even if you're not prone to nausea, it's very tasty! More: If you have a decrease in your hunger level, an increase in clear phlegm production , a slow digestion, joint swelling and/or a pale flabby tongue, a daily cup of Owl Instant Ginger Tea with Honey can do wonders to circulate and restore your body's digestive harmony.

POPSJeff Galloway: Silly yet effective mental tricks to make it across the finish line
More: Magic Footprints: Here's another foot-related trick: Visualize fatigue escaping from your body through the soles of your feet. Imagine leaving footprints that are damp and faintly glowing with the residue of the fatigue that, moments earlier, was slowing you down. With every stride, you're gaining energy. Super Coolant: It's a sweltering day, the finish line seems unreachable, and you're hotter than a polar bear at the equator. No problem. At the next aid station, imagine that the volunteers have slipped a secret ingredient into your water. This substance soaks up heat. Take a short walk break as you grab two cups, drinking as much of one as you need. Feel the water (and its secret ingredient) seeping into your arms and legs, down to your bones, cooling your core body temperature. Then lean forward, pour the other cup over your head, and picture steam escaping. Visualize billions of molecules absorbing body heat and then releasing it into the air.

POPSJeff Galloway: How to speed recovery following your first marathon More: Get Wet: As soon as you can, immerse your legs in cool water for five to 15 minutes. Just use the cold water from the tap and add some ice after you’ve been soaking a few minutes. A cold soak helps reduce any inflammation. Take A Walk, Again: The day after the race, walk for 30 to 60 minutes, even if you don’t feel like doing so. It’ll help you recover faster as you get the blood pumping again. Walk And Jog Every Other Day: Two days after the race, try some light jogging for 30 to 60 seconds for every two to three minutes of walking. The total time for these sessions can be as little as 15 minutes, but 30 minutes is better. Alternate your walk and walk/job days (steps 4 and 5) for the next week or two.

POPSHow to eat to best fuel exercise More: Post exercise…eat something within 15 minutes…the enzymes that help the body re-synthesize muscle glycogen are really most active in that first 15 minutes. The longer we wait to eat something, the longer it takes to recover…to prevent that delayed-onset muscle soreness, refueling is part of it… How we drink can make a difference in how optimally we hydrate our body. A lot of people sip liquids, but gulping is better. Gulps of fluid leave the stomach more rapidly. It’s important to do this. It seems counterintuitive, it seems like gulping would cause a cramp. People are more likely to have stomach cramps sipping because fluid stays in their gut too long. When you take…gulps as opposed to sips, you have a greater volume of fluid in the stomach. That stimulates the activity of the stretch receptors in the stomach, which then increase intra-gastric pressure and promote faster emptying. This is why gulping is preferred.
