POPSRunning Doc: Dealing with side stitches More: For relief: Stop. Take long, deep breaths. Stretch to the sky...then bend at the waist with your arms extended above your head to the opposite side. I call this the “swoosh” stretch, because you look like the Nike logo. A word of caution, since I am a doctor: A side stitch can sometimes be felt all the way up to the shoulder. But this kind of pain may signal a heart attack, especially if it is on the left side and persists after you've spent a few minutes stretching. And if you get a side stitch each time you exercise, you could also have a problem with blood flow to the intestine. So if you experience these symptoms, see a doctor!

POPSSports nutrition: carbs give you fuel More: Consuming carbs as soon as tolerable after hard exercise enhances muscle glycogen replacement because- 1) the blood flow to the muscles is faster immediately after exercise, so carbs can get carried to the muscles faster; 2) the muscles are better able to take up the carbs because of increased sensitivity to insulin, the hormone that helps transport carbs into muscles. Plan to have banana, fruit yogurt, fruit smoothie, and/or fig bars readily available.

LaLanne has slowed down in recent years, but suffers no joint pain and only occasional muscle aches. He's had two knee replacements - from football and car crash injuries, not exercise. He's never taken steroids, but did develop his own line of vitamins and of course, his juicer, made famous on late-night infomercials.… "Working out three or four times a week is plenty for most people, but it's an ego thing with me," he said of his regimen. "I'd like to see how long I can keep it up." In his prime, he could lift two 150-pound dumbbells doing chest presses and set a record of 1,033 pushups in 23 minutes at age 42.

If “you’re taking ibuprofen before every workout…Your bones don’t thicken and your tissues don’t strengthen as they should. They may be less able to withstand the next workout. In essence, the pills athletes take to reduce the chances that they’ll feel sore may increase the odds that they’ll wind up injured — and sore.

POPSPolestriding Benefits to Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease After 24 weeks of polestriding training, subjects increased their exercise endurance from 10.3 +/- 4.1 minute to 15.1 +/- 4.5 minute. This was significantly greater than control group subjects whose exercise endurance declined (from 11.2 +/- 4.7 to 10.3 +/- 4.7 minute; P < .001). Relationships between systolic blood pressure (P < .001), heart rate (P = .04), rate pressure product (P = .05), oxygen uptake (P = .016), and perceived leg pain (P = .02) and exercise time improved from the baseline symptom-limited treadmill test to the 6-month symptom-limited treadmill test in the polestriding group compared to the control group.

POPSExercise in a Pill Previous work with genetically engineered mice in the Evans lab had revealed that permanently activating a genetic switch known as PPAR delta turned mice into indefatigable marathon runners. In addition to their super-endurance, the altered mice were resistant to weight gain, even when fed a high-fat diet that caused obesity in ordinary mice. On top of their lean and mean physique, their response to insulin improved, lowering levels of circulating glucose.
