The Next Hacking Frontier: Your Brain?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  8-30-2009    1
As neural engineering becomes more complex and more widespread, the potential for security breaches will mushroom. For example, the next generation of implantable devices to control prosthetic limbs will likely include wireless controls that allow physicians to remotely adjust settings on the machine. If neural engineers don’t build in security features such as encryption and access control, an attacker could hijack the device and take over the robotic limb.

A note about SSL How Scroogle's SSL option protects your privacy
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  7-23-2009
"They could tap the line upstream of the provider, and just look for packets containing www.google.com/search. Next to this are your search terms in plain text, with your IP address in the same packet" Thats just one example of just how unsecure Google is, and here is another. "Most employers monitor the websites visited by their employees. There are impressive "employer spyware" packages such as Websense that they use to do this. Because the GET method is preferred by almost all search engines (see this page), even if the employer sees only the web address that you used to arrive at Google, he already knows the search terms you requested. With a record of all the search terms you've used while you were at work, each with a date and time recorded in his log, your employer has a pretty good idea of what you've been thinking. There are no laws that prevent employers from doing this sort of snooping" Full article at source.

Scroogle: An introduction and micro-review
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  6-23-2009
As mentioned in a previous rant, here it is in the flesh. every person I have turned on to this has continued to use it, and with good cause. Its most obvious advantages are that it is simplistic and unbiased. Unlike serach engines from the Google family where the highest bidders appear on the first page. But it doesn't stop there, this is truly anonomous searching and surfing that to a large extent ignore ads, has multi-browser support (support for safari is near completion if not already done) and has a toggle button for when encryption is required. As with all open source stuff if you like it then support it... or don't.

Smart Power Grids may be rife with dumb security bugs
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  6-19-2009
These smart meters were the result of a $4.5 billion stimulus plan by the Obama administration to update electrical grids across the country to make them smarter and more efficient. This could allow meter values to be sent directly to the company rather than requiring a meter reader to stop off at each user’s house. In order to receive larger chunks of the stimulus money, companies raced each other to create a smart meter that worked. Perhaps in the rush, the amount of testing needed was reduced and security issues may have been compromised. Wonderful.
