Having just survived 2 24-hour transit times in less than 30 days (and uncomfortable ones at that), this just really grabbed my attention and sounds absolutely fascinating. I just hope that the seats recline a bit more.... More at the source, as well as the plans for first and business classes

Is "Senate Candidate 5" Obama's State Senate Mentor?
merrie
by merrie  12-10-2008    1
Speculation centers around two prominent African-American politicians, Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. and Emil Jones, president of the Illinois State Senate. Smith notes, though, that Jackson isn't particularly known as a fundraising specialist, whereas Jones has money in his State Senate account that could be transferred to Blagojevich. Jones and Obama had a close relationship when Obama served in the Illinois State Senate. It was Jones who eventually took Obama under his wing and made sure that key pieces of legislation developed by others had Obama's name on them. Thus, it's interesting if true (this is speculation upon speculation) that Obama didn't want his old mentor to get a U.S. Senate seat. It's also understandable, inasmuch as Jones (like Obama for that matter) is connected to Tony Rezko.

Identity Politics — It's What's for Dinner In Denver
merrie
by merrie  8-25-2008    2
For a campaign that promised post-racial politicking, its candidate and surrogates haven't been above race-baiting at the drop of a hat. This goes hand in hand with Obama's repeated baseless smears of John McCain as a racist. Emil Jones just followed Obama's lead, as Obama has followed his. Post racial = everybody is a racist, so the word no longer has any meaning?

The Interview With Author David Freddoso
merrie
by merrie  8-4-2008    1
"The Case Against Barack Obama" The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media's Favorite Candidate That would have been against the interests of now-convicted developer Tony Rezko, who was tied closely to the Stroger family. He would have upset Mayor Daley, he would have to upset Emil Jones. So he played along like a good machine politician. Obama was denounced by a lot of liberals including some big people who were still big fans of his at the time. Obama’s very much about the old politics, and he’s very much not a reformer. It shouldn’t be a surprise except the only surprise is that he has managed to project this reformer image. MO: Your book references many stories from the Chicago Sun-Times. Why does the national media ignore it? DF: Well, unfortunately, I think the national media -- which resides largely in New York and Washington and perhaps out West in Los Angeles -- doesn’t look at or read the Chicago papers nearly as much as they should.

Major DNC Donor To Party Treasurer: Obama Is A Bad Investment
merrie
by merrie  8-1-2008
Getting not one bill passed in the first 6 years of his career in not inspiring. Having Emil Jones hand him the ball 26 times on the one-yard line in order to make Obama a United States Senator does not cut it either. What deals he made, he did to benefit no one but himself. He never worked long enough in either Senate to help the people who elected him. Andy, I could never imagine you taking credit for legislation someone else slaved over. Starting in his community organizing days he claimed sole responsibility for other people's accomplishments all for the purpose to boosting his career. Every person I have talked to who worked at the Law Review at Harvard with him, or in the later part of his career, said the same thing: he was arrogant and self-centered. Substance matters. Barack is a politician, an inexperienced one at that, pretending he is different. I just see him as arrogant and power hungry. Our country deserves better.

Obama's Entire Illinois Legislative Record Built In A Single Year
merrie
by merrie  6-28-2008    5
He became Obama’s kingmaker. Several months before Obama announced his U.S. Senate bid, Jones called his old friend Cliff Kelley, a former Chicago alderman who now hosts the city’s most popular black call-in radio program. Cliff Kelley recollected the private conversation as follows: “He said, ‘Cliff, I’m gonna make me a U.S. Senator.’” “Oh, you are? Who might that be?” “Barack Obama.” Jones appointed Obama sponsor of virtually every high-profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority than Obama and had spent years championing the bills. State Senator Rickey Hendon, the original sponsor of landmark racial profiling and videotaped confession legislation yanked away by Jones and given to Obama, complained to me at the time. “Barack didn’t have to endure any of it, yet, in the end, he got all the credit.

The Illusion That Is Barack Obama
merrie
by merrie  5-12-2008    37
For all his Camelot-like rhetoric, Obama is a product, in significant measure, of the political culture that Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass described as "The Chicago Way" At no point did Obama, the would-be saviour of US politics, challenge this corruption, except for face-saving gestures as a legislator. Emil Jones, the machine-made president of the Senate, allowed him to sponsor a minor ethics bill. In return, Obama made sure to send plenty of pork to Jones's district. When asked about pork-barrel spending, Jones famously replied: "Some call it pork; I call it steak." Obama repaid the generosity. When he had a chance to back clean Democratic candidates for president of the Cook County board of supervisors and Illinois governor, he stayed with the allies of the Outfit. In the Illinois Senate, he made a specialty of voting present. Obama is such a down-the-line partisan that, in the past two years he has voted with the Democrats more often than did the party's majority lea
