POPSHow Big Pharma pushed a more-expensive, no-more-effective drug
More: Lexapro had $2.3 billion in sales in 2008 even though generic versions of Celexa and every other drug in the class sell for a fraction of Lexapro’s price. For example, a month’s supply of 5-milligram tablets of Lexapro costs $87.99 at drugstore.com, compared to $14.99 for a month’s supply of a generic version of Prozac. Forest has recently been raising the price of Lexapro to make up for a decline in its use… It is impossible to unpack all of the reasons for these prescriptions, but some industry critics say one reason could be the money doctors make from Forest. Psychiatrists make more money from drug makers than any other medical specialty, according to analyses of payment data. And Forest gives more money and food to doctors than many of its far larger rivals… Forest’s payments to doctors in 2008 were surpassed only by those of Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Novartis and Merck — companies with annual sales that are five to 10 times larger than Forest’s.

POPSAriad Patent Dead Derek Lowe does a dance of joy. Eli Lilly had compared the patent in question to "patenting gravity." Ariad basically described some basic biology, then hand-waved the potential drugs that could affect it.

POPSAmylin Shares Crash As if the company's diabetes drug Byetta, already dealing with controversies over the risk of pancreatitis, needed more bad news. This potential FDA delay, as reported in the link by TheStreet.com's Elizabeth Trotta, has nothing to do with pancreatitis but with a manufacturing issue related to the new, long-acting Byetta being developed by Amylin, Alkermes, and Eli Lilly. Apparently samples from Alkermes' facility don't match the commercial scale versions made in Amylin's facility. This seems like an execution mistake, and something the companies could have been on top of. No wonder investors aren't happy.

This isn't limited to young women, either - see Dr. Miriam Nelson's book Strong Women Stay Young , which is all about the benefits of strength training for women.

POPSPrasugrel Delayed The Food and Drug Administration will take another three months to make a decision on Lilly's blood thinner. Given the lack of an advisory panel and the controversy surrounding the drug, this is not a huge surprise. Exactly what info the FDA needs going forward is not clear.

POPSPrasugrel Gets Priority Review This is important because some on Wall Street had been arguing that if prasugrel didn't get priority review, that might mean the FDA saw new advantage over Plavix, from Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi-Aventis. That, in turn, might decrease the chance of approval.

POPSWhat Causes Alzheimer's? The leading hypothesis is that the disease is caused by the buildup of plaques of a protein called amyloid. Drug researcher Derek Lowe does his usual fine job explaining an elegant experiment that gets to the heart of whether that's true. Want final proof? Wait for the big trials of Alzheimer's drugs being tested by Wyeth, Elan, Eli Lilly, and others.
