The revolution in Nanophotonics
dopesick
by dopesick  8-27-2009
Future work may involve creating a spaser-based nanolaser that uses an electrical source instead of a light source, which would make them more practical for computer and electronics applications. Awesome news. I can only think how great it's going to be for other projects and researches, speeding up the discoveries. :)

Operation Starfish ~ Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP)
merrie
by merrie  1-30-2009    2
One nuclear weapon. One missile. One motivated maniac. The lifeblood of America -- food, energy, goods and services -- would be gridlocked. The power grid: knocked out. The phone system: gone. Several years ago, an Iranian military journal publicly considered the idea of launching an electromagnetic pulse attack as the key to defeating the world's lone superpower. Yet, Copperhead Democrats call the threat of Iran "hype" and "fear". Frank Gaffney, author of Warfooting, states "If hits the electrical grids of the United States... if it hits electronic devices, computers, chips of various kinds--the things, in other words, that power our society--they're likely to be severely damaged, if not destroyed." This would wreak havoc on the country's electronic systems, and plunge much--if not all--of the continental U.S. into a pre-industrial state. A blue-ribbon commission created by Congress confirmed this danger in a report submitted in August 2004.

New games powered by brain waves
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  1-16-2009    2
In a report this week USA Today newspaper said game maker Uncle Milton plans to release a similar game this year. Called "Force Trainer" it is named after "The Force" powers of Yoda and Luke Skywalker in the popular Star Wars films. The game calls for players to lift a ball inside a transparent tube using their powers of concentration. "It's been a fantasy everyone has had, using The Force," the daily quoted Howard Roffman, president of Lucas Licensing, as saying. "Force Trainer" also uses electroencephalography, or EEG, to measure electrical activity in the brain recorded on a headset containing sensors.

"The Fuel Cell Phone"
cakebelly
by cakebelly  11-26-2008    1
continues: The company explains how the fuel cell technology works: "A proton-conducting polymer membrane is sandwiched between a cathode and an anode. At the anode, upon reaction with a catalyst, the hydrogen gas separates into protons (positively charged hydrogen ions) and electrons. The protons are conducted to the cathode, through the polymer electrolyte membrane, while the electrons travel along the circuit, producing a current. The electrolyte plays a key role in only allowing the positive hydrogen ions to pass though, obstructing the negatively charged electrons. The chemical reaction would be short circuited if free electrons were to pass through. At the cathode, the hydrogen ions and electrons combine with oxygen (from the air), forming water vapor/water. The fuel cell will generate electricity as long as it is supplied with hydrogen and oxygen from the air" FuelCellStickers are not yet available for the market, so in the meantime, keep paying attention to how you use
