Getting Closer to String Theory
dopesick
by dopesick  11-13-2009
Without string theory, physicists need two theories to explain how the universe works. General relativity explains gravity, while the other three basic forces are explained by the “standard model.” Moreover, gravity has been very difficult to reconcile with quantum theory, a problem for which string theory offers a solution.

The life of Albert Einstein -
murieleileen

He is best known for his theory of relativity and specifically mass-energy equivalence, E = mc2. Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect."

Quantum Physics.. What it is?
WomanInTheMoon11
by WomanInTheMoon11  9-10-2009    1
Quantum physics is a branch of science that deals with discrete, indivisible units of energy called quanta as described by the Quantum Theories. Quantum physics invloves the study of the realm of the very small, at the atomic and subatomic level, such as electrons, photons and quarks. Therefore, it’s operating at the below-cell level of the body. Quantum Physics is also the study of the forces that act on atomic and subatomic entities. There are 4 forces: gravity, electromagnetism, the strong force (binds particles in the atom’s nucleus) and the weak force (responsible for radioactive/beta decay). Quantum Physics also studies the fields through which forces move. Example of fields are the gravitational field and electromagnetic field. A field can extend throughout a large region of space so that its influence is all-pervading.

Dark matter and dark energy have often gotten a bum rap. They have been accused of everything from altering cellular structure*, to speeding the expansion of the universe. I think further investigation is needed before we sully Dark Matter's good name. *X-Files "Soft Light" Second Season

Why can't we hear the transmissions of Aliens?
Oortcloud
by Oortcloud  12-3-2007    3
Some people insist that the Earth has been leaking signals into space for the last few decades and by now we should have gotten someone's attention or heard someone else out there leaking signals. The fact is that you would need a radio dish the size of the Arecibo dish (pictured above) to pick up a good signal only as far away as Saturn. Any farther than that and even that dish will only yield static.

Surfer Dude May Be Next Einstein
merrie
by merrie  11-17-2007    1
 • Click here to read a formal presentation of the theory, if you dare. By mapping known subatomic particles, plus 20 imaginary ones, onto the 248 points of the E8 lattice, and then rotating the lattice in a computer model, Lisi shows how the particles elegantly combine to form three of the four forces. The imaginary ones combine to form gravity, for which subatomic particles have only been theorized. • Click here to watch a video of the lattice being rotated. "Some incredibly beautiful stuff falls out of Lisi's theory," David Ritz Finkelstein of Georgia Tech tells New Scientist. "I think that this must be more than coincidence and he really is touching on something profound." But Professor Marcus du Sautoy of Oxford tells Britain's Daily Telegraph that "there seem to be a lot of things still to fill in." For his part, Lisi self-mockingly calls his finding "An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything," and downplays the suggestion that it may be the Grand Unified Theory.

Djiezes

Since the upward forces of the magnetic field would balance the force of gravity for tiny organisms, they could float in the upper atmosphere for years and reproduce there, giving them a chance to evolve capabilities to endure the hardships of that environment, including coping with strong UV and a near-vacuum. Such organisms would thus be well equipped to endure the rigours of a journey through space
