POPSBattery-Powered Stair Lifts vs. AC-Powered Stair Lifts Stair lifts are devices that are attached to the treads of staircases to safely move someone who is elderly or disabled up or down the stairs. POPSHans Christian Ørsted : Who he was and why you owe him But no one had ever before scientifically documented the connection between electricity and magnetism, Cadden-Zimansky said. Ørsted's observation helped set the stage for the discovery of electromagnetic induction, whereby a changing magnetic field is used to produce an electric current and vice versa. Hans Christian Ørsted: 21st-Century Man Today Ørsted's fingerprints are on everything from medical scanners to your car's motor to theoretical invisibility devices. Cadden-Zimansky compared Ørsted's contribution to science to that made by another European scientist who lived more than a century before."Isaac Newton showed that the same phenomenon"—gravity—"causes a ball thrown into the air to fall down and the planets to orbit the sun," he said.Like electricity and magnetism, the different expressions of gravity "look like two different phenomena, but the same rules can describe them both. Ørsted's discovery was analogous."

POPSElectricity Grid in U.S. Penetrated By Spies "These are pure speculations," said Yevgeniy Khorishko, a spokesman at the Russian Embassy. Wang Baodong, said the Chinese government "resolutely oppose any crime, including hacking, that destroys the Internet or computer network" and has laws barring the practice. Utilities are reluctant to speak about the dangers. "Much of what we've done, we can't talk about," said Ray Dotter, a spokesman at PJM Interconnection LLC, which coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in 13 states and the District of Columbia. He said the organization has beefed up its security, in conformance with federal standards. Specialists at the U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit, a nonprofit research institute, said attack programs search for openings in a network, much as a thief tests locks on doors. Once inside, these programs and their human controllers can acquire the same access and powers as a systems administrator.

POPS Operation Starfish ~ Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP)
One nuclear weapon. One missile. One motivated maniac. The lifeblood of America -- food, energy, goods and services -- would be gridlocked. The power grid: knocked out. The phone system: gone. Several years ago, an Iranian military journal publicly considered the idea of launching an electromagnetic pulse attack as the key to defeating the world's lone superpower. Yet, Copperhead Democrats call the threat of Iran "hype" and "fear". Frank Gaffney, author of Warfooting, states "If hits the electrical grids of the United States... if it hits electronic devices, computers, chips of various kinds--the things, in other words, that power our society--they're likely to be severely damaged, if not destroyed." This would wreak havoc on the country's electronic systems, and plunge much--if not all--of the continental U.S. into a pre-industrial state. A blue-ribbon commission created by Congress confirmed this danger in a report submitted in August 2004.
