Florida Care-Giver System Plagued With Felons
merrie
by merrie  10-1-2009    2
12 registered sex offenders and 200 people with histories of harming children. Exemptions are supposed to be granted only with proof of rehabilitation. But about 1,800 of the people approved " or one in five " went on to be arrested again, some within days of the state's determination that they could be trusted to care for vulnerable residents. "It's totally unacceptable. Obviously, this has become a huge loophole that needs to be closed," said Nan Rich, D-Weston, vice chairwoman of the Florida Senate's Children, Families and Elder Affairs committee. A sex abuse scandal at a Miami day care in the mid 1980s prompted the first of several state laws requiring background checks for caregivers and allowing for exemptions. Florida now has a patchwork system with glaring inconsistencies. Employees at day cares and facilities for the disabled undergo a nationwide criminal check. But caregivers for the elderly are checked only for offenses in Florida, with some exceptions.

foxyarse
by foxyarse  9-22-2009
A federal magistrate set bail at $50,000 Monday during the men's first appearances in courtrooms in New York and Colorado. The elder Zazi, 53, whose son is at the center of the investigation, will be allowed to go home under electronic monitoring and required to remain there except for work, medical care, religious services or court appearances, prosecutors said. He is unlikely to be released until later this week. Prosecutors are asking that his son, 24-year-old Najibullah Zazi, be held until trial. He is scheduled to attend a detention hearing Thursday. Video Watch why authorities wanted to talk with Zazi » Don't Miss * Bail set for terror suspect in Colorado * Criminal complaint against Najibullah Zazi (PDF) * Criminal complaint against Mohammed Wali Zazi (PDF) * Criminal complaint against Ahmad Wais Afzali (PDF) Investigators said Najibullah Zazi has admitted attending courses and receiving instructions on weapons and explosives at an al Qaeda train

Save Some Money When Buying Wheelchairs
iregress
by iregress  9-13-2009
The reality cannot be ignored that wheelchairs can cause a person a big sum of money, especially if the patient is going to utilize the specialized ones. Some of these patients are those that are completely paralyzed and are in need of a special kind of assistant device to use inside the house as well as outside. But the wheelchair they require can be a bit costly. For this reason, you can turn to used wheelchairs.

Senior Home Care
iregress
by iregress  8-26-2009
In the cycle of life it can be expected that sooner or later many people will suffer from some form of illness that forces them to become dependent upon someone else. This is usually the case for those who are in their later years. Today, the most common illness that is plaguing our elderly is Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is where seniors begin to lose their memory and have to go through life not remembering their family or friends or even themselves. Not only will they suffer from not remembering their closest acquaintances, but they can also forget how to perform basic functions like eating and writing.

Virtually No U.S. Media Interest In 'Imploding' Canadian Press State-Run Health Care Story
merrie
by merrie  8-21-2009    1
"We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize," Doing (sic) said in an interview with The Canadian Press. Given the current debate in the U.S. over health care and private insurance, and the president's seeming determination to force a state-controlled and ultimately state-run health care regime onto the remaining portion of the system that is still privately run, you would think that the story out of Canada might have attracted the interest of U.S. establishment media outlets. Noel thought that "It's going to be absolutely delicious to see how this gets reported by Obama-loving media in the next 24 hours." Four days later, deliciously proving that "the Obama-loving media" is more than a mere slogan, there has virtually no original source establishment media coverage of what Ms. Doig said, or of anything else relayed in the Graham's CP report.

Hey, (Cowering-In-The-)Barracks Forshame Obummer: If You Would Lead, Maybe We Would Follow
papananook
by papananook  8-20-2009    2
Does this guy who seems to want, more than anything, for everyone just to be happy and sing along in the same key, still really believe in bipartisanship, at the very moment when the very people with whom he is negotiating are reinforcing the most absurd and inflammatory lies asserting the elder-cide intentions of his health-care bill? Sorry. Did I say "his health-care bill"? Problem number one here is that there's no such thing. As in just about everything else of consequence this administration has been involved in, he seems quite content to simply defer to Congress and allow the sausage-making process on the Hill to generate precisely the policy abomination one might expect, with all the political liabilities we've come to know and love from such a dispiriting collection of 535 (minus two or three) moral midgets.

New Craze Sweeps Nation: Killing Granny
masbury
by masbury  8-6-2009    7
Most Americans hope to die at home; very few do. Our system only rewards continued treatment. If I have a terminal disease, why do I have to spend my last days vomiting from chemotherapy among strangers? Healthcare reformers propose giving us the option of paying for anti-pain (palliative) care at home, allowing us to die a more natural death, and the wingnuts come out of the woodwood insisting Obama wants to kill old people. Shame on those who would spread such manipulative slander!

How House Bill Runs Over Grandma
jatfla
by jatfla  7-31-2009    4
The author mentions the likes of Stephen Hawkins. Ok..he might be worth saving. But what about those pace-makers, the hip-replacements, the cancer treatments, etc....? Counseling every 5 yrs.? Can you imagine the horror of knowing that your appointment is coming and someone might suggest that you might...for the good of society...want to take a really, really happy pill? Imagine all that will be saved in Social Security. (yuck!) I know my MIL lived 2 yrs. beyond any quality of life...but I'm not pulling the feeding tube!!! My mother is here with me, receiving full-time care from me with the help of some wonderful people at Elder Care. She needs help with walking, bathing, dressing....but she enjoys the home-life, the great-G-children, good food, security and reading. She would be a candidate for those counseling sessions. :~(

We Must Protect The Vulnerable From Robots
Mohir
by Mohir  12-21-2008    1
Service robots are currently being used in all walks of life, from child-minding robots to robots that care for the elderly. These types of robots can be controlled by a mobile phone or from a PC, allowing input from camera "eyes" and remote talking from caregivers. Sophisticated elder-care robots like the Secom "My Spoon" automatic feeding robot; the Sanyo electric bathtub robot that automatically washes and rinses; and the Mitsubishi Wakamura robot, used for reminding people to take their medicine, are already in widespread use. Despite this no international legislation or policy guidelines currently exist, except in terms of negligence. This is still to be tested in court for robot surrogates and may be difficult to prove in the home (relative to cases of physical abuse).
