POPSGeorge Washington's Hemp Crop The father of our country had painful wooden teeth. And cannabis is a potent painkiller found in traditional medical practices the world over going back thousands of years. Fiber hemp farmers don't separate the male from female plants. Marijuana farmers remove the male plants (which display their sex first) before they fertilize the females so that the females then produce lots of THC. Fertilized female plants produce very little THC, putting their energy into making seeds instead. Male plants produce almost no THC. I'm just sayin...

POPSPro-Pot - Anti-Gay Election Results
Yesterday in the state of Maine there were "pro-pot," and "anti-gay," referendums on the ballot. Results: Pot, yea; Gay, No. But...maybe that exaggerates the results. It wasn't like the people of Maine voted to pass out marijuana at the schools (they formalized a distribution method) and it wasn't like the voters of Maine wanted to start gay folks witch hunts (they didn't want to approve state "marriage status," to gays). There are lots of ways of looking at these political decisions. Should gay rights even be an item up for vote or a right protected by the Constitution? But is gay marriage a gay right? Maine is now the 31st state to have a direct referendum on gay marriage and they have all turned it down. Maine is now the 5th state to allow the "medical," use of marijuana. With Obama telling the Feds not to prosecute individual users acting in accord with their state's laws, I'd expect a lot more states to go this way. No knighthoods being given out, in either cas

POPSFarmers plant hemp seeds on DEA's front lawn As anyone who isn't smoking crack has already figured out (and even a few who are), America's drug policy is a scandalous failure. Not only has the so-called "War on Drugs" utterly failed to stop the flow of recreational drugs in America, it has criminalized struggling farmers who seek to grow industrial hemp as a profitable, renewable crop that's in high demand across multiple industries.

POPSFarmers Arrested Planting Hemp on DEA Headquarters Lawn Hemp is not a drug and has no capacity to get someone stoned. Currently eight states -- Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana, North Dakota, Vermont, and West Virginia -- allow industrial hemp production or research, but federal law, which requires nearly-impossible-to-obtain-permits to grow hemp, trumps those state laws. A bill introduced by Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) would allow states to craft their own policies. Some facts from North American Industrial Hemp Council: Hemp has been grown for at least the last 12,000 years for fiber (textiles and paper) and food. Hemp oil once greased machines. Most paints, resins, shellacs, and varnishes used to be made out of linseed (from flax) and hemp oils. Rudolph Diesel designed his engine to run on hemp oil The products that can be made from hemp number over 25,000.

POPS Draconian drug tests The new welfare reform bill gives unprecedented new powers to Jobcentre staff There are further concerns about rights and liberties. For the first time Jobcentres will be able to share information with the police, the probation service and "others" to check the "accuracy" of information provided by the claimant. This could include information about drug-testing on arrest, court orders and sentencing and substance-related treatment received in prison or the community. While the bill protects against evidence acquired by Jobcentres being used in criminal proceedings against the claimant, the information sharing is two-way with no obvious barrier preventing the police using the information to prompt or inform a line of inquiry or criminal investigation.

POPSSpain: Honduran Coup. Turmoil
At the UN today the PM of Spain said the recent coup in Honduras was not acceptable. Recent Background: The deposed President secretly returned to the country but they quickly had to seek asylum in the Brazilian embassy, which then became a focal point for street protest and a police siege. While invading and occupying countries over ten thousand kilometers from home the Americas have been heating up. Shootings on the border yesterday by federal agents and that never use to happen. Plans for U.S. troops to move into military bases in Columbia was also complained about at the UN. Under the guise of fighting terrorism and/or fighting the Drug War these invasions take place, but many times this is just excuses and lies. At least we should, imo, return to our Constitutional procedures for declaring war...it is clearly wrong to be starting all these wars and not obeying our own laws on how to do this properly, but almost pointless to tell this to the hypocrite flag-waving wa

POPSHugo Chavez of Venuzuela: New Laws: Saint or Sinner?
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is a very interesting person, making profound changes in his nation and strong in his opposition to many U.S. policies. He's in the headlines today for new laws that cut out state support for Catholic education in the schools, introduction of "socialist doctrine," (about'The Liberator', Simón Bolívar), restrictions on hostile media and (gasp!) rights of the government to expropriate property. He opposes Israeli policies of warmongering, apartheid and genocide, is not only forming alliances with Russian and Iran but is building up a substantial coalition of Central and South American countries. The clip here is about the U.S. now planning to put "troops on the ground in Columbia," - (after a lifetime of covert military actions --- Columbia is one of the USA proxy armies in the region). He's also called George Bush the Devil (good for him) and he disdains the game of golf (probably shouldn't have mentioned this). Saint or Sinner? ¿Otro

POPSMalalai Joya: Message to Obama "When the U.S. and its allies replaced the Taliban with the fundamentalists of the Northern Alliance in 2001, every Afghan knew that these terrorist bands were no different than the Taliban. Today, unfortunately, we can all clearly see this. The nature of the fake democracy ‘donated’ to Afghanistan by the U.S. government, which was trumpeted by mainstream Western media as an achievement, stands exposed before the world. Afghan women have been betrayed in the past eight years under occupation. They are deeply feed up with the propaganda of the Afghan government and its international backers who invaded Afghanistan in the name of liberating women."

POPSRepublican Coups In New York
And Democratic leaders must determine what to do about 45 workers toiling away in a building close to the Capitol who appear to have been engaged in quasi-political research for the Republicans. "Every time we nail something down, we uncover another rock and there's another 30 people there it's all over the state," said Angelo J. Aponte, who as the new secretary of the Senate is the top aide to Malcolm A. Smith, the Queens Democrat who became majority leader last month. But as Citizen Bruno was busy getting indicted on massive federal corruption charges, the new majority was taking bold steps to fix the basic way that New York works -- reforming the state's notorious Rockefeller drug laws, seeking to limit outside pay for legislators, and -- perhaps most impressively, from our perspective in the netroots -- introducing unprecedented transparency via a new website streaming all Senate business and providing novel opportunities for citizens to get involved in the Se
