Consumer Reports finds BPA in most canned foods
Lexica
by Lexica  11-6-2009
More: …our findings are notable because they indicate the extent of potential exposure: Consumers eating just one serving of the canned vegetable soup we tested would get about double what the FDA now considers typical average dietary daily exposure… A 165-pound adult eating one serving of canned green beans from our sample, which averaged 123.5 ppb, could ingest about 0.2 micrograms of BPA per kilogram of body weight per day, about 80 times higher than our experts' recommended daily upper limit. And children eating multiple servings per day of canned foods with BPA levels comparable to the ones we found in some tested products could get a dose of BPA approaching levels that have caused adverse effects in several animal studies… Drinking three servings per day of canned apple juice with BPA levels comparable to the levels found in our samples could result in a dose of BPA that is more than our experts' daily upper limit.

Running Doc: Pre- and post-race tips for newbies
Lexica
by Lexica  11-3-2009
More: The day of your race, eat the same as you do on long training runs/walks…my favorite pre-race meal in training: the “Elvis Bagel” (peanut butter and banana on a bagel)… After the event, within 2 hours of finishing, have a recovery drink with protein in it. There are commercial products but chocolate milk works as good as all these scientific mixes… “Marathon feet” are common to get in the middle of the night post race…This again is due to inflammation of the soft tissue structures and easily preventable. When you get back to your home or hotel room, a simple immersion in an ice bath for 15 minutes will prevent this happening to you!… Do not get a post event massage until a minimum of 2 hours after finishing the race…Do not try any new stretches or have someone stretch you out again until 72 hours have passed… Give yourself two or three days of rest before starting your training again. Try a nice swim in these days, but allow yourself some recovery time.

Why having a negative attitude does not help you
jamesc623

Why having a negative attitude does not help you Everyone finds themselves in unfavorable circumstances and negative situations now and then. When caught in this kind of situation we often ask ourselves or raise our eyes to the sky and ask, “Why me?” We are then attacked by doubts about ourselves and our efforts at correcting the situation.

Do you expect your teen to get into trouble?
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  11-2-2009
This article demonstrates that parents who expect their child to conform to peer pressure and be rebellious are more likely to be just that...I wonder if parents were a bit on the "wild" side themselves, are they more likely to expect their child will be too? What are your thoughts on this research? Have you seen this to be true in your family? How do we change our expectations to alter this reality? Tweet us a reply or leave a comment. Running Doc: "Do the salt" to avoid hyponatremia
Lexica
by Lexica  10-31-2009    1
More: * Follow the fluid recommendations….drink only when thirsty! * Include pretzels or a salted bagel in your pre-race meal. * Favor a sports drink that has some sodium in it over water, which has none. * In the days before the race, add salt to your foods (provided that you don't have high blood pressure or your doctor has restricted your salt intake). * Eat salted pretzels during the last half of the race. * Do the salt! Carry two small salt packets with you (the kind found in fast food restaurants), and before the race and again during the last half of the race (marathon or half-marathon) consume a single packet under your tongue. * After the race, drink a sports drink that has sodium in it and eat some pretzels or a salted bagel. * Stop taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatories 24 hours before your race and do not start again until 6 hours post-race.
