Remembering Charlie Brown
missmartini
by missmartini  10-10-2008
Entertaining and humourous article that pays homage to Charles Schulz's Charlie Brown. My favorite :) Like Groening, I too used to spend hours drawing Peanuts cartoons because they "looked" easy. I loved Snoopy! I wanted a beagle before I knew that they were crazy dogs. I owned a Snoopy snowcone machine - which they re-released and I saw at Urban Outfitters. I had thing for Schroeder. Thanks a million Charles Schulz!

Virtual worlds carve out new path
balthazarus
by balthazarus  10-9-2008    2
"The first step is to have virtual worlds as a common medium for ordinary people. It has to become far more ubiquitous, more like a toaster than a DVR," What virtual worlds do well is contextualise social encounters in a way that social networking cannot do, he thinks. "Without places it is hard to have activities. The bowling alley or the alcohol does not matter as much as the people but if you do not have the bowling alley or the alcohol it's just an empty room and no-one comes,"

Uncommitted Voters -- Obama Won Debate
iulawboy
by iulawboy  10-8-2008
I'll take capturing 15% of the uncommitted vote compared to 12% for McCain. The pool of uncommitteds continues to decline and McCain has fewer and fewer opportunities to turn this election around.

OBAMA DEFENDS 'CREATIONIST PSYCHO BITCH' REMARK
papananook
by papananook  10-8-2008    8
"Now that doesn't mean I'm comparing Governor Palin to a pig. What I am saying is that if it's a straight choice between Governor Palin and a pig, I'm fucking the pig. "If I then went on to say that I'd rather fuck a dead pig than Governor Palin, that should not be construed in any way as a personal attack." Senator Obama refused to apologise to the Governor, insisting it would take too long to translate the words into her 'retarded hillbilly language'.

Conspiracy & Order: The psychological need for pattern
kmcolo
by kmcolo  10-7-2008    1
People see false patterns in all types of data, imagining trends in stock markets, seeing faces in static, and detecting conspiracies between acquaintances. This suggests that lacking control leads to a visceral need for order – even imaginary order,

European Big Four Rule Out Joint Rescue Action
merrie
by merrie  10-6-2008
The summit called for greater flexibility in accounting rules by the end of October, in line with US practices. This would be done by giving European banks "the same rules to reclassify financial instruments from the trading book to the banking book, including those already held or issued". This is a reference to a rarely used rule in the US that allows banks to record assets at an amortised cost, rather than at its current market value. This would be a way of circumventing the existing "mark-to-market" accounting rules, which critics say have contributed to a downward spiral of asset prices *Allow banks to apply mark-to-market accounting rules for assets more flexibly in line with US practices *European Commission to draw up EU rules aligning bank deposit guarantee schemes *Establish task forces to co-ordinate *Establish task forces to co-ordinate with the US authorities and others during crises *Supervisors to draw up codes of conduct on pay and risk-taking
